I'm hoping I'm not posting in the wrong place. I chose to write one of my college papers on building and setting up a model making workbench. It's supposed to be general modelmaking but alot of my prospective interviewees have dropped off the face of the earth. What I would like everyones help with is pictures of your guys' workbenches and anything you have done to them to make them both function better and be better places to spend time.

If you could get Les Bursley's take on this it would be golden - if you go to his website at awesomepaintjob.com he's got a pic up of his bench and his paint organizing system. Will submit a pick of my workspace later.

I will help, its not like my workbench is the greatest, but any sort of data will likely help you, even stuff to support your claim via examples of dismal fail.

If you think it is made of fail say why. My own is pretty terrible at the moment, just an old computer desk my neighbour was throwing out, and right under a window too, so no place for shelving. I'm lucky enough to have a whole room to play with, so it'll get better.
I've gone as far as interviewing an ergonomics specialist and other highbrow stuff, but the bones of the paper boil down to "A comfortable (ie ergonomically correct) and pleasant work area will give you more enjoyment out of your hobby".
I'll post a pic of my own in a few minutes...

So here's mine. I need more shelves, more bitz boxes, more.... stuff. I do have a cool paint tray attached to the underside of the desk that rotates out on a swivel, but I think I need all those pretty colours in plain sight. The big shelf on top of the desk is going as it takes up too much space, and I may ad some shallow shelves either side of the window and some wide ones across it. Space Marines and Orks should only be painted in gloom, the official light condition of the 41st millennium. The glare from the window is a bit much and makes shadows on the side of the model I am painting, so not good. I have a bench vise that'll go in soon and I need to get rid of all my extra RC car junk. I was going to expand it to the right of the computer, but we got rabbits and they got dibs on the space. Maybe when I get them outside I can take it back!
Only permanent downside is that my wifes computer is in the other corner. So much for a man cave!

Looks like a nice, workable space, mate. I see this becoming a "Post your workspace with this thread on your computer" thread. At least, that's how it'll go with any luck.

Didn't even think about that.... I guess it's proof for the instructor that I did indeed ask these questions!
It is a good space, but there's lots of finnicky things that irritate me and make me stop painting.

Well, I'm also one of those that use a box in the closet... The women in the household would surely kill me if I started to leave everything where it can be seen (which she already does if just one single guardsman is on a table, or in the bookshelf...)

Take a picture and post it up, man! Every bit helps the OP.

Mine is covered in about 3 inches of mini related debris - paint pots, bits of models, completed models, paper, tools, etc.
I had a picture of it somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
It is generally quite good when clear (which happens about once a year when I get fed up of the mess), though it is a bit small.
Also have a large cardboard box that moves around to whatever surface is clearest to act as my spray booth for airbrushing.
All my tools and paints are in a DVD/CD rack by the side of the desk (though I have way more stuff than can actually fit on it comfortably so it kind of spills out everywhere when I try and get anything out - and obviously a lot of it lives on the desk as well
My models and other hobby stuff, as well as my bits boxes, rule books etc are stored in a couple of tall book shelves.
