Ok this is a serious question. with all of the recent changes, and the unusual amount of anger at GW, should i start looking at a new hobby now. Instead of wasting £????? on a hobby that has a distinct possibility of going down the pan?

I mean with the price hike's, rushed codice's, and just plain impossible to understand rules. It sounds like they are aiming a shotgun at their foot.

It's been in business for over 20 years, and the current complaints are nothing new for GW. Rather par for the course, actually.

The problem with listening to the gamers is it usually ends up being advice that hurts their bottom line. While a some of their recent decisions have been a bit strange, they don't want the company to go under. It pays their bills, and pays them well. While a lot of people would diagree (right now a lot of Australians and New Zealanders), GW does know what it's doing. They do think very hard about these sorts of decisions.

As someone already said, price hikes and bitter vitriol aimed at GW are par for the course. If you stick around in the hobby, you might notice it happens about every year, right about this time too. Since this is the time of year they do their annual price 'adjustments'.

It's unlikely GW will go under. While there's actually competition now, where GW makes its money isn't from people who are jumping ship to Warmachine or Malifaux or Infinity. They make it from the casual players who come into the hobby for a year or two, buy an army and play with their friends, then slowly leave the hobby, making room for the next generation of casual player.

The overall opinion from what ive heard is that this price hike is a bit more than the norm?

And yes the thing that worries me most is not the complaining, but the strange movements of GW of late.

40k isnt going anywhere, and neither is Games Workshop.

People are raging just to rage.

The only bad thing is for people in aussie land and the like.

Their prices need to match the current currency difference.

As for prices going up per kit ?

Well.. look at everything today, its all going up in price, Gas is $3.80 a gal here (i know cheap compared to some places) food at the store goes up, food to go out is going up.

They just passed a thing to raise our electric bills here by 21%.

Everything is going up in price.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

If anything, as a publicly-owned company, GW will probably have to suffer for awhile for anything to come to pass. If their sales tank, you might see a bunch of higher ups s-canned, which is probably in the better interests of the company. But to overreact and quit the hobby now... eh, that's going overboard.

1. Only one question mark is ever needed.
2. Hikes* Codices* etc - apostrophes are for possessives and contractions, not plurals.
3. Impossible to understand rules? Only if you're thick.

GW will be around for a while. I don't see this putting them under, even if the latest hikes will hurt their business in a tough economy. Games Workshop is actually doing very well:

I guess you've been listening to a lot of Australians. The actual price hike they're doing is pretty normal, aside from the Finecast stuff.

Basically, they stopped European online stores shipping outside of Europe. Australians have been taking advantage of the strong Australian dollar to order from places like Maelstrom games, and getting between 40%-60% savings, since locally we pay about double what Americans pay, even though our dollar is about the same/stronger on some days. So to those people, it was on average a 50% price increase. It wasn't actually GW's price hike that did this, but their policy on European online stores.

To give to an example of how much Australians were saving, I put together a core of a Vampire Counts force on Wayland games. A VC Battalion, 4 boxes of Skeletons and 3 boxes of Grave Guard. With shipping, it came to about $220au. Buying locally, I'd be paying $479au. That's a nice saving of just over 50%. This is where the massive price hike moaning has come from.

@OP , you'll be safe. GW only does this because they know they can get away with it. If it gets bad enough to look like its going to die , then it'll just lower price + make some more nice new minis, and everyone will praise it l like some hero.

There's always a way to get a better deal. For one, Australians could order from the US instead. Not quite as cheap, but still cheaper.

And yes, GW can stop independant retailers from shipping to the southern hemisphere, by simply not allowing them to sell GW products if they do. GW products are big sellers still, and retailers don't want to have that taken away. Just having the option to ship to Australia would be enough for GW to not allow them to sell their products. And yes, they do have an extensive legal team that frequently checks these things.

Considering the way things have been going recently, does that mean we’ll see the release of GW’s get out of jail card (i.e. the release of a Horus Heresy 40k expansion) sometime soon LOL?

If they went under and their IP was for sale maybe Blizzard would snap it up?

Giving the rights to Activision would be terrible.

More likely some tabletop game company would grab the IP.

GW and 40k aren't going anywhere. It's still by far the largest gaming company in the world.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Right on. I can't wait for VGW-Day.

Look, if GW goes under, that's not the end of the games we love and the universes they exist in. The fluff is safe in the hands of Abnett, McNeill, Kyme, and Dembski-Bowden. The rules will be safe in the hands of fans. Look what the community has done for Epic and Bloodbowl - great games, abandoned by GW for their cash cows, now cared for by the community at large.

I’m in the same boat, I love 40k but hate GW!

At the end of the day, it is possible to enjoy 40k without supporting GW. Some of the FFG products look pretty good, especially Black Crusade (can’t wait to pre order this). Likewise, one could not support GW by not purchases any new miniatures but at the same time, play the odd casual game or two using pre existing models (or third party models and paints).

I’m personally not going to be purchasing any GW products period unless something dramatic (fictional) happens such as the release of a non Mat Ward written CSM codex plus a complete range of new models by the end of next year. Given how GW operates, they’re not likely to change their business practices or marketing direction so I’m not going to be purchases anything from them either.

Right now I’m hoping for the company to crash and burn. Can’t wait to see GW put a positive spin on their actions in their next financial report.

My dream would be for 40k to be picked up by fantasy flight games, at least the rules...who's going to make the models is a different story.

As annoyed as I am with Games WOrkshop, I can't bring myself to want them to crash and burn. They've shown us thay can give us good models, and I doubt any company that picks up 40k from the ashes of GW is going to care about the IP as much as GW currently does.

Please don't act clueless unless you are clueless. Listen closely, and I shall explain it. I'll type slowly for you, so you can keep up:

Up until this week I was quite happy to grin and bare all the bs that we put up with when it comes to GW. Truth be told I wanted them to be a successful company so they can continue to make great models for a universe I adore. That all changed this week though, with their four-pronged attack against the gaming community. Everyone in my group has quit (buying their products). I've seen other long term posters here throwing up their hands going "I quit!" this week as well. No matter what the bleating apologists and GW fanboys might want to think, and no matter how many hopeless arguments they throw up defending price rises and increased marketing secrecy, the truth is that this week has been a tectonic paradigm shift for a lot of people here.

So feth them. I hope they fail. I hope they burn. I hope everything they do turns to ruin.

DarknessEternal wrote:GW and 40k aren't going anywhere. It's still by far the largest gaming company in the world.

You're right about one thing. 40K ain't going anywhere. GW? All they are is the current license holders (and originators). When the slow death spiral their company is in finally comes to an end, someone will step in. The sooner the better.

And, as the others have said above me, hating GW =/= hating 40K. So get a clue.

Yes. Come and join the (mostly) happy family that is FFG. With FFG you get a company that works to build good-will with their customers, previews products (extensively) and is more focused on making good rules than they are on selling the new shiny models. Sure, it's not always perfect (I should know - I helped put together the most recent Deathwatch errata and and it took me hours to do), but then again what family is perfect?

I have been in the hobby for over 10 years. In those 10 years, the most uttered phrase was "If GW keeps this up, they will price themselves out of business."

The problem is we as customers have helped create an elastic product. As long as GW does not do a sharp increase in price at once they will see very little drop in units sold, and that lost of revenue is made up in the increased sale of the other units.
