Right now, with vehicles (and models) borrowed from WitchHunters and Space Marines, this is definitely a circus Grey Knight army...
Turn 2 - Space Marines --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My son decides to keep most of his vehicles stationary to maximize his shooting. First, his Predator destroys a
TL/
AC from the heavy support Dread.
His bikes moves to get a side shot on the Las/
Plas Razorback and destroys it. (We realize after the battle that it should have only destroyed one of them and not both).
His other Predator destroys the Chimera's turret, while the Land Raider's last remaining weapon (a multimelta), shakes the Chimera. The passenger MultiMeltas fire; one of them destroys a
HB Razorback.
Note: in this picture, the terminators have disembarked. After the shooting was over, my son asked for a do-over and return them to the Land Raider. He's my son, of course I agreed!
Turn 2 - Grey Knights --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Dreadknight moved towards his vehicles, almost everything else stayed still. The Henchman from the destroyed Razorback started moving towards the objective on the far left.
The Grey Knights PsyCannon shooting was pretty effective this turn, destroying his immobilized, almost weaponless Land Raider as well as one of the Rhinos. Off on the far right, it took the Purifiers, the disembarked Henchmen (with 2 meltaguns), and the Ven Dread to remove his assault bike with the one wound.
in the assault phase, the DreadKnight destroyed a Rhino.
Score so far: we each have one objective more or less captured. As for Kill Points:
SM: 2
GK: 6. Good thing this is an objective game!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Turn 3 - Space Marines --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My son is feeling pretty pessimistic at this point. The performance of his two squads of rapid-firing tacticals does nothing to change his mood. While both squads rolls extremely well in their to-hit rolls, T6 with 2+ save is just too strong and the DreadKnight takes no wounds. The Pred shooting at the heavy support Dread does nothing. However, the other Pred manages to explode the Ven Dread (I roll double sixes on the pen roll).
In the assault phase, the assault terminators and Vulcan destroys the
GKSS squad.
Turn 3 - Grey Knights --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chimera with the
DCAs moves up to the Terminators and disembarks, ready to assault.
The Dread and the Purifiers light up the tactical squad closest to the ruins but manage to only inflict two wounds. Other shooting at the
TH/
SS Terminators puts a wound on Vulcan and kills a single Terminator.
Coteaz uses Hammerhand, and so the
DCAs charge with their four WS6 power weapon attacks ...
and kill ... nothing! The terminators kill five, allocated to the servitors and the two acolytes. Coteaz's stubborn pays off big here.
In the other combat, the DreadKnight kills two Tacticals and remains locked in combat. My son is starting to feel more optimistic ...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Turn 4 - Space Marines --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The turn begins brightly for my son, as his Pred explodes the immobilized Chimera, killing four models hiding behind it. His other Predator shakes the
AC Dread for the umpteenth time and once again fortitude comes to my rescue. The multimelta (on the passenger in the rhino in the ruins) fails to kill the Razorback. Also, the tactical squad moved and then ran towards the objective (but hidden behind the hill and the chimera).
In the assault phase, the game turns against the blue. Last turn the storm shield assault terminators were indifferent to the power weapons of the
DCAs. This turn, with only four wounds to save it looked like the terminators were going to win another battle. But as you can see, all four saves were failed. My son contemplates revisiting his difficult teenaged years ...
Vulcan killed a
DCA and then died in turn to Coteaz's force hammer. Their consolidation took them towards the space marines hiding behind the hill near the objective.
Finally, the DreadKnight and Tactical Squad failed to inflict any wounds.
Turn 4 - Grey Knights --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Off on the one side of the board, the melta henchman continued their good difficult terrain rolls and were close enough so that one melta could shoot at the Predator. Continuing my lucky rolls, the one BS3 melta killed the Predator.
The remaining second
DCA squad ran towards the one objective, while the depleted Purifiers in the ruins moved forward.
On the other side of the board, the weaponless Razorback containing the other melta henchman moved close to the circled objective. My depleted Purifiers moved and shot at the Rhino. Once again the PsyCannons rolled double sixes (rending) followed by double sixes for damage (exploded). Of course my son failed his cover saves.
The Chimera moved aside, allowing the full Purifier squad (and the Dread) to shoot at the tactical squad behind the hill (killing five). The
DCAs in the assault phase wipe out the remains of the tacticals behind the hill.
The DreadKnight and Tactical Squad continued their drawn battle, inflicting a wound each.
At this point my son calls the game. He has just the one Predator alive, the full Tactical squad from the exploded rhino, and the four marines fighting the DreadKnight. While his full squad could likely get rid of the Razorback and perhaps its occupants (and thus capture one objective), he has no way to prevent me from capturing the other three. And if we continued to turn six, I might just as likely wipe out the remaining parts of his army.
Grey Knight victory Objectives: 3 to 0 (or maybe 1)
KillPoints:
SM killed 6,
GK killed 12
Analysis --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My son and I have played a
lot of
40K games against each other over the past eight or nine years. I can only remember a very few massacres. Things might have gone differently had I not had such good luck with psycannon rending against his Land Raider and his Vindicator on turn one. Similarly, if his
TH/
SS terminators had not decided to fail all their saves in turn four, I would have had some real problems in the center of the board. Nonetheless, I think this Grey Knight list is pretty strong: it went second against a reasonably shooty army with a real hammer unit and managed to win comfortably. Next up? My son wants a rematch against his Thunderwolf list. Thanks for reading.
