This thread started as me being very insecure of my painting.
Surfboard66 wrote:Hello Dakka, I'm painting up an army of Grey Knights and I want to paint them above tabletop for all of them. I don't feel like I am thought considering it only takes about 2 1/2 hours to paint each one. (Which is short for me) I just want a second opinion so I know I'm not wasting my time. Thanks guys.

The pictures are kinda Ehhhh sorry. :/

Now I'm turning it into a blog to keep me working at a good rate. This is my first ever blog and it is a complete WIP. I am trying to build a
competitive Grey. Knight Purifier list that consists of.....
Crowe
2 Venerable Riflemen Dreads
30 Purifers
1 Vindicate Assassin
2 Rhinos
2 Razorbacks
Well I can't write much more because I'm sitting In School on my iPod touch writing this. Thanks guys.

Edit: I have calculated the price of all the models, it's over $500. I'm also adding forgeworld stuff to it for about $150. Luckly I have a job, I'm spending an crazy amount of money for a 15 year old.

I've got fairly high standards (I consider MY stuff tabletop), but those look great. Would be happy to get a game in against 'em. You know, if I still played GW games... >.>

Those look great. I wouldn't call them "Golden Demon Standard", but they are well above average.

Arrrgh! the thought of having to paint to a Golden Demon Tabletop standard!
It's hard enough to get stuff painted as it is!

Generally, TTQ at my GW store is 3 colors, and based.

So, yes. You've done about 3 steps + on each of your colors, and the basing looks great.

They're definitely tabletop standard, I consider tabletop standard being full painted...I feel like it is a prick move to tell someone there models are not painted well enough to play. Some people are just bad at painting...

Anyways, I think they look great.

Since when has tabletop standard ever been a requirement to play? I just look at it as three (very loosely organized) tiers: Looks like gak, tabletop, and display quality. You could play with any of those (or bare plastic) for all I care.

Definitely. It looks like you've painted 'text' on the purity seals and the books. That is impressive, and way above minimal tabletop quality.

Ah, my mistake. I figured people got upset when somebody played below TTQ or refused to play with them...I'm kind of sheltered with my gaming terms, I only play with a few friends, never at FLGS or GW stores.

Above TTQ to me.

I paint to a 3' standard. If you can tell what they are from a distance of 3', then job's a good'un.

GD level painting I leave to those who play at 3" (because at arms reach a lot of the subtleties would not be visible.)

I would call it more high end table top quality.

If you want to gauge your painting, take a look at this painting rhubric or goto adepticon's site for some painting guidelines to see how your minis rank up

I scored myself on the "painter's scoring sheet". I got a 26, and I don't consider my models to be anywhere as good as these. Great job!!!!

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

Thoroughly enjoy the job you've done. I've seen guys that have played for 8+ years that don't paint their mini's that well. Also, as a fellow GK player who's working on an army as well, excellent job with the classic scheme.

Seriously, way to go man. Give yourself some credit cause you freakin deserve it.

To my eye you could have spent a bit more time in cleanup (mould lines) and in doing the deep shading / lining, but yeah, they're nice enough. Practice wet blending and those force weapons will really pull the paintjob up - it's fairly quick when you get used to it.
