Hi chaps,

Thought I'd start a thread that isn't directly aimed at hating GW and is hobby related.

Rules

How many games have you lost or felt let down by as you've forgotten a rule, your opponent has forgotten a rule or you both simply didn't know it existed?

This happened to me last night in my 4th game of Flames of War...and when I got home and re-read the rules there was numerous places I thought I could have scraped a draw/victory . It is really frustrating and I'm wondering if you have any good stories about forgetting rules or simply not realising til hours after and going "ARGH!"

It's the fasted way I've ever learnt rules though, I played my first FoW having only skimmed the rules and having a very good Vet to explain it to me. Although I have even explained some rules to him now, very small but VITAL rules.

One last point - do n00bs ever feel rude asking/debating rules with a vet? Cause I sure as hell did last night even though I was right! :-( It just seems wrong...

Occassionally, but it's a bit like England losing because of a dodgy refereeing decision i.e. If that was the only thing required to tip the balance, then we probably didn't deserve to win in the first place.

The rule that used to be most frequently forgotten IMO was the movement reduction cause by wearing different types of armour in Warhammer Fantasy. Heavy armour and a shield reduced movement by 1", chaos and magic armour didn't have a reduction. Another reason to hate chaos warrior armies. 3+ save and no movement modifier? I think most people forgot about the modifiers all together which, if I'm correct, is probably why they don't bother with them any more.

Ya see, I have not played a game of WHFB for a very long time, and the movement rule always caught me out.....
I'm playing KoW tonight for the first time, and I'm sure I'll miss something. Even thou the rulebook is only 12 pages long.

One rule I always forgot was way back in 2nd Ed, and that was the overwatch rule. I'd been playing it for ages and had lost/misplaced my OW counters, leading to a great many arguments over who was on OW and who wasn't.... Happy Times!

Playing Eldar has me forgetting tons of rules, from forgetting reserves (when I first started playing) to the ever dreaded forgetting to cast your reroll spells :(

I'm sure i'm going to botch tons of rules in fantasy though, haven't even started playing it yet!

Playing Warmachine and not fully understanding the Calvary charge rules had me lose a game. Also not getting an extra die on some other stuff as well in another. Same opponent, didn't bother to really read the rules. Now I know them and I will call people on stuff >:U

I have a buddy who plays Orks, and he frequently forgets he can use a "WAGH" move until it far too late for it to be useful.

I know a number of local players that forget/remember/make up rules as it benefits them.

We do have one guy who will kinda make up rules to his own benefit.

Same guy who proxies his orks as eldar... while only having like... 2 eldar models... kinda annoying.

I refuse to play with him, as do many others.

The worst is he will tell people the rule states one thing... which helps him. He always says the wrong thing for wound allocation.

As for me, I always forget to do orders... that hurts sometimes...

OK, this is going to make me look bad, but when I'm playing as Orks?

There is at least an 80% chance I'll forget to ever call a Waaagh! the entire game.

Not a rule, but I used to constantly forget to roll for reserves, never having Marbo come in, probably didn't lose me a game, but the demo charge could have helped.
In FoW, I constantly find myself subconsciously clinging to Warhammer 40k rules, usually to my opponents benefit, like thinking my entire Bersaglieri Company had to fire at the same thing, when each base could fire at different things.
sparkywtf, I have seen worse than proxing one army for another, once I saw a guy playing Tau with 54mm plastic army men, and a printed codex.

I played my Nids for the second time ever this evening. I forgot Ancient Adversary on my Tyrant the entire game. Also, my Trygon never arrived. I rolled a 1 each and every time on reserves! I still won the game (against Orcs in an objective claiming scenario) but still...

I've been making the leap to FoW, and It's a leanring experience to say the least. For the first few games I was completely lost, but I've won my pasty three, so I'm starting to get the hang of the rules I think.

Worst and probably the most embarrassing rule I forgot was in 40k when I used a SM command squad in a bike army. Completely forgot that they had feel no pain until round 3 when it was just the captain and 2 bikers left in the squad to face half an eldar army because the rest of my army was dealing with the other tau player.

I often find myself misusing things like SMS's for Tau, or getting weapon profiles mixed up.

Played an entire game with both my opponent and I thinking pulse carbines were assault 2, last turn we realised and felt so fail... was the only way i'd held his Space Wolves at bay.

Last game i played against my orky friend had me with a squad of guys shooting out of a shocked rhino, killed the entire squad then we rememberd it was shocked n they couldnt shoot... had him puttin all his models back on the table only to be removed again by some close quarters firing.

He had a squad wiped cut down when he could have used the mob rule... so it kinda balanced out.

When I play Tau, I -very often- skip the movement phase entirely, because I'm so excited about shooting.

I'm a n00b, with about a dozen games under my belt, playing against long time (years and years) players. I lose, a lot!

Last time I went to GW I told one guy he could not pivot his wave serpent and then assault out of it - he was genuinely surprised as said that everyone does that at tournaments.

Then I played against a chap who kept taking cover saves, even though his marines weren't in cover there was no intervening cover. He was claiming cover saves as my rangers were in cover.
I knew it was wrong but could think why. Fortunatley the above guy came to my rescue and found the shooting out of cover if you're within 2' of the edge. It was too late by then.

After the amount of times the vets have explaned rules to me, corrected me, re-explained the same rule again, it felt good too get some rules correct for a change.

Well last night my chaos were fighting (slaughtering) my brothers Orks. I had crushed his Nob squad and they broke and ran. Sweeping advance later and they were toast. Then he remembers his Boss Poll. He quickly flicks through his codex and reads up on it (we are both new players so we are learning as we go). I decide to let him have another chance and reroll the morale for using his boss poll. He finally makes his leadership and goes on to crush my Daemon Prince.

I still won the battle though. By a single standing Terminator lol

One of my first games, played to learn the rules, we both forgot that powerklaws removed armor saves -and- the instant death for double strength.

I left that game wondering why everyone said PKs were so good. They didn't do gak!

Then I read the rulebook before going to bed, and had a hard time going to sleep

There have been times where I've lost a game due to forgetting a rule, but I never get annoyed about it.

I know that I find it quite unsporting when opponents finish a game and start going through a rulebook saying "I could have beat you if I had done..."

The way I see it, I play the game to have fun and not to win. Rules queries are for while you're playing the game. Post game is all about talking about the cool stuff that happened in that game.

If I forget about stuff it's because of stuff which isn't there or which isn't normally done.

I tend to forget about successive assaults on vehicles. I most often forget about reserves as the units are sitting off the table, psychic powers and unit buffs because they are physically not there as a visual reminder.
