So I have two badab Black washes.

One smells like something small and furry died in it. Anyone have any idea why this could happen?

one thing i find annoying is that some of the Wash pots are so tight that you need a screw driver to open them.

I have noticed that the GW washes each have a distinct smell... I always thought Babab Black smelled Almondy! Can't say I'm found of the smell of Leviathan Purple though!

I find it most helpful to NOT inhale the paint. If I want to spend money on something foul smelling and probably harmful, I'd take up smoking

I have only noticed a slight earthy smell from all brown colored washes.

everything else just smells like paint fumes.

occasionally, i do have to leave my paint station to escape the fumes. I tend to have very controlled breathing while painting and as such am short of breath. when there are unpleasent gases about that can lead to nausa.

Does your smelly wash look strange? Like it's starting to dry, forming tiny strands which tend to glue on the brush or something is settling down on the bottom of the pot? Does the wash behave as usual when you use it (is it sticky/shiny after it has dried or takes excessively long to do so?)? Have you always shielded it from light/excessive heat or cold? Is the pot old or new? Although acrilic paintings are sinthetic-based, I suppose both them and washes have sometimes pigment of organic or mineral origin, making them subject to some sort of decay, in which case I suppose you should be careful if you want to use them, lest they ruin your models (I have sometimes wrecked perfectly (well, maybe not perfectly, but they were the best I could manage) painted minis with spoiled paint. It wasn't GW's, though...). In addition, it's higly probable there's a quantum of variability even between different batches of the same paint or wash, meaning they can sometimes have different smells without necessarily having something bad. So my advice is to use it anyway, if it looks and works ok, maybe ventilating the room better and pausing more often or wearing some protective equipment (you are never too cautious with those things...).

My last pot of space wolves grey smelled horrid-bought it two years ago and I hated using it 'cause the smell was so bad. Finally dried up and I got a new one.

I laughed.

Seriously, though; the GW washes DO NOT smell like any paint I've ever had. Very distinct. I agree with above posters that they aren't made of the same type of chemicals as normal paints.

Like when I clean a brush with paint in it, it makes a cloud in the water. When I clean a brush with Devlan Mud in it, it makes strings of Devlan Mud in the water before dissolving. Other washes, including GW's old ones don't do this.

My Badab Black wash also has a rancid odor. My red, blue, ogryn flesh, gryffon sepia, and Devlin Mud washes do not.

Odd.

It doesn't appear to have separated, and it covers the same as it did when I first got it. I don't recall it smelling this strongly at first. Would there be an organic ingredient in the Badab Black formulation?

All of the washes taste revolting. The citadel paints are pretty bland.
