My friend wants to collect them but I an trying to convince him that they are overrated and used to much, and doing this will give me evidence to show him to stop him collecting them. But the thing that makes matters worse id he will paint them in the Ultramarines Chapter .

If he wants to do them, who are you to stop him?

And really, if you're doing Tyranids--you can always steer him here and people can show him other Chapters that have fought the Tyranids.

Chapters like the Scythes of the Emperor, for example.

I don,t have many Termagaunts and the Space Marines do my head in when they shoot me. r:

If the issue is balance as you both are starting out: work with the lowest factor of troop and go up from there.
Have him start out with a unit of Scouts(either sniper armed Scouts or standard bolter/shotgun Scouts) while you have your Gaunts and then work things up from there as you both build up your forces.

They're a bit overdone, but they're reliably going to get lots of support and goodies.

What exactly do you mean by overrated? Do you just mean used too much or do you mean people think they are better on the tabletop than they really are?

I love my Space Marines.

Everyone should play them.

Do I play Space Marines? No

Are they a little too prevalent/popular? Yes

Are they still awesome? Feth yeah.

It doesn't help that there are 7 Space Marine codices (yes, CSM are Space Marines), compared to 9 non space marine codices, which includes the woefully outdated Necrons, and Sisters Of Battle (who wear power armor, ride in rhinos, and use bolters!). Three of the last five codices have been Space Marine variants.

Vanilla Space Marines are pretty overrated, considering BA get 99% of the same options, cheaper Devastators, a 35 pt rebate on transports, 1/6 chance of getting Fearless + Furious Charge on each squad, better Dreadnoughts, better Predators, and nearly every vehicle is Fast.

There's literally zero reason to play Codex Space Marines unless you're running a Vulkan list or a Khan list.

No, I do not think they are over-rated, just that they recieve too much attention from GW. And who are you to stop your friend from playing Marines, just because they can kill your Gaunts easily?

I think they are a strong army, but I think they don't have much flavor to them you are the bes tof the best i get that but they are very square units war heros without personality. I <3 me my orks because they are fun, and challenging but i can't say it seems like marines are as challanging. I see people make mistakes all the tmie with marines that their and they shall know no fear and 3+ save get them out of whereas my orks woudl be tabled ... whci is good for beginnners , but space wolves and blood angels i don't even like playing them, i do, and i usually win, but it is always an uphill battle where my units simply aren't as good as anythign the opponent has on the board in any way

Friends don't let friends play 40K.

Coming from an area where players are few and far between, do not discourage from playing any army. Spend your time encouraging him or her to get into the game. I would be happy to have someone be interested enough to get into the game. More players = more opportunites for games.

They're definitely overdone, but if he wants to do them, then that's up to his choice.

Well Ultramarines are pretty fun, tons of options, and we wear the 40k community hate like a badge of honor. Let him play the Warrior Kings of Ultramar if he wants!

I was gonna say "Let him play what he wants" but then I saw the Ultramarines bit...

Why do you want to presade him? Just let him to collect what he want's.

I am an marine player, but when someone ask me who to collect - I give him a quick overview off all races and let him to decide what to collect. And when he pick it I tell him short history, what combat tactic that race is utilizing etc...

If he wan't to collect the Ultramarines - let him collect them...

Zero reason? Really? I can think of a few good ones...

I think Marines are overestimated in what they can do. A lot of chicken littles cry that Codex: X Marines is the most overpowered thing ever or what have you, when really it's just more Marines with some flavor added. Marines are fine, even if a book here and there could use some tweaking.

Let him play marines if he wants. Yes they are a very common army but I've seen many players start with marines and eventually end up choosing some other army. I myself play marines as my primary army and imperial guard as my secondary (because sometimes I don't want to play with marines).
