Now that mystics no longer have their old broken rules, are Drop Pod armies viable again, and if so, how would one use such an army?

Cheers!

TBH it wasn't mystics that broke Drop Pod Armies, it's the fact that you can just reserve everything and shoot the Drop Podded units when you come onto the board.

Now, a Black Templars drop pod list that doesn't have that horribly gimping Drop Pod Assault rule, on the other hand...

Is there anything better in a drop pod army than meltaguns and combi-flamers with Vulcan? Maybe +Pedro for sternguard shenanigans?

Also, whats the legality of empty drop pods?

You have to buy a pod FOR a squad; you can't just buy empties for your list. However you can choose to drop the pod empty and either deploy the squad on the table or in regular reserve.

Most good DP-focused armies include multiple units which they intend to deploy normally, so that if the enemy is going to reserve against them, they can hold the good stuff back and drop empties on objectives (which they can still contest) or in the corners away from the enemy (in KP games). Units such as thunderfire cannons, devastators (in BA or SW, where those are reasonably priced), or shooty dreads.

Since you were quite vague in which army you intend on playing with, I'll toss my $0.02 in for the Black Templars side of things.

First off, I explain basics on the Black Templars drop pods in this article. Using that information, as well as for my BT 101 guide, this list was created. I also did a very exhaustive "How To" article on using that particular list. Finally, I made a blog post regarding the two main BT drop pod archetypes: MSU and "Max Bodies".

And if you can stomach one more link, this is a pretty decent explanation of what "Max Bodies" means.

I'm opting for a half-Drop Pod, half-table army involving 3 Ironclad Dreads, 2 Shooty Dreads (in the army's total five drop pods),

Vulkan and MOTF starting on the field, with additional firepower support.

I was thinking Space Wolves, but I'm guessing the concept is roughly the same wherever it is used.

I have been planning an space wolves drop pod list myself.

The ting that screw drop pod armys over is the drop pod assault rule, and the ability to reserve everything for regular armys.

My plan is to take

Bjorn the fell handed.
3x Dreadnoughts with multimelta/heavyflamer in drop pod.
3x10 grey hunters in drop pod.
3x2 Land speeders. MM/HF

This way you have a better chance with bjorn to get second turn.

Should your opponent still choose to reserve you can drop the dreadnought first turn, then hide them in terrain/smoke and wait.

After your opponent rolls on to the table, you still have 3 drop pods, and 6 land speeders deep striking on him.

The old one Bjorn have to start, or walk on to the table as he can't take a pod. But I feel that this is a way to run a drop pod army that is not screwed by reserves. and still have some mobility after the drop with the land speeders.

But why is the rum gone?
