If you need motivated or made to despair your painting skills, here are some pictures from the Golden Daemon in France. As you may suspect, the page is in French but Google translator makes a decent job of it.

Despair? No. Motivated? No.
Do I think that the work is incredible? No, not really due being overwhelmed by some awesomeness from this site (as well as others).
I know the people who do the painting competition spend a great amount of time in their creations and they should be commended on that aspect.
But painting competitions are subjective by nature and after awhile to me everything is "just the same".
However, thank you for showing us what is being done in France.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-
"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".
Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?
You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

Adam - you really are correct - there's a certain region of quality that these award-winning projects reside in that doesn't ever seem to break into the hyper-creative. There's a particular similarity amongst them.
Colors are lush, blends are perfect and all of the text-book techniques are executed flawlessly - but I tell you I get more interested in a less well-painted project that's got a certain special touch that can only happen from someone who's doing it for the love and not the competition.
That being said, I do love looking at this stuff, but it's not inspiring because I'll never be able to paint like this ever, and it doesn't make me despair either because I like my punky-old style painting style that kind of stops at a certain point (when I say, eh... good enough).
But I love looking at these pics though, thanks for sharing this link!

Out of Sculpey and greenstuff, it looks like.
However, it is worth observing that, aside from a handful of entries, the overall standard in France seems to have gone down.
This might be the photography, but I wonder if the gloss on the GW brand has tarnished a bit, recently, seeing the best painters heading to Euromilitaire and other events...

This would be the safest bet...
Also, GW's restrictions are a tad stifling for such creative types.

Some good painting in there, but a lot of the pastel colour schemes remind me of stuff in White Dwarf 10+ years ago.
I didn't particularly like the Avatar. The painting was good, but it was so bright that I couldn't make out any detail at all. I know that was probably the intention (to make it look like it was glowing) but I just didn't like it much myself.

Another mission, the powers have called me away. Another chance to carry the colours again. My motivation, an oath I've sworn to defend. To win the honour of coming back home again. |

There were some amazing models exposed for the contest, and I'd say that the most incredible ones were (sadly) not awarded (the mechanicus train and a beautiful warhound deserved something)
Here are the pics I took there (sorry for the poor quality, it was hard to get a decent pic):
