Subject: Alternatives to GW spray base colours?

I'm now totally sick of skull white cans. You get past half a can, two thirds if you are lucky and the paint starts pissing out like a water pistol, coating the model and giving a really awful base coat that's thin at the edges and thick on large central flat sections. When it dries it's even more uneven and looks horrible, making which ever colour you paint over it look even worse.
Alternatives?
Quick clarification:
I don't want to grab a spray gun as I'm convinced it would be totally wasted on me.
Painting base on by hand is even worse with how awful the skull white in a pot is.
Is it just GW's paints or are white spray/pots generally crap?

Painting with white is like taking three steps backward for every two forward. |

What army(ies) do you play because you might not have to use white depending on the colors of your army. You could also try grey primer or black primer from krylon. I think you can get them from a hardware store

I play red necrons with bone joints so I need the white base but haven't got the patience to paint the 3,000,000 thin layers of white to get an even white base by hand.
And it doesn't ever seem to matter how hard I shake the bleeding skull white, it always seems to come out gash when I get past half a can.
Thanks for the replies btw!

White is a massive pain in the rear armor value, in general.
GW rattlecan's have kind of a low propellant volume. I suggest shaking the can extra well (30 actual seconds before each session, or if the can sits for 5+ minutes).
But for the price you pay, you're really better off getting a hardware store rattlecan. Krylon and Duplicolor both make great products. Speak with the paint department rep, and stress to them that a thin coat is essential for the project you are working on. I find most paint department guys to be fairly knowledgeable, and capable of finding you what you need.
I'm a big fan of duplicolor flat black self etching primer.

I use Halfords whire primer and find it very good.
Also a little tip that might help you to get really smooth finishes.
Undercoat and then Varnish the models before painting.
