I vote a lot in the gallery. Obviously, not as much as Kid Kyoto, but enough to know that some people really need to take the extra .05 seconds to click the "Disable Voting" button. I will sit around and vote on images for quite some time and it starts to get really annoying when I want to critique and vote on other users "Finished" works and then up pops some crap phone camera pic taken from 6 feet away from a gaming table (what am I supposed to be voting on?) or you get the blurry, unpainted close up of a killa kan's right arm . It's totally pointless. I understand that it's lost somewhere in your Painting blog, and that's totally fine. What's not fine, is that it's thrown in my face to vote on it. What do you expect to get on it? A painting/coolness score of 0/.64? Or are you gonna vote on it yourself and give it 10/10 because it's uber-cool-1337ness that you're in the process of working on?
I guess what I'm after is, is there a way to implement a gallery MOD? Can someone with a lot of voting experience (more than me) moderate the gallery and decide which images should not be capable of being voted on? I only ask, because it's quite blatant that some users don't care enough to click the little button. I also realize that this would be quite time consuming, so I wouldn't expect to see it done overnight. I do, however, believe that the gallery would benefit from this by getting more views and votes if people knew they were always going to see a completed mini.
Oh, and put some search tags on your pics! If you don't, it makes me do it, which gets old when half the time all you had to enter was 40k, sm, dark angels, captain. Oh lordy the 3 seconds it took me to type that! Who has that kind of time?!?!

How about a "Notify Moderator" button in the Gallery Section?
Then you could notify a moderator about out of focus pictures, inappropriate pictures, and so on.

I'm sure I have suggested an image report button before I'm pretty sure that there was a planned gallery clear out a while ago where it was suggested that anyone who saw an image that should probably be deleted should tag it as "delete" (though I am not sure how this went or if it is on going). Edit: And I am sure there is a (possibly more than one) mod for the gallery itself. Edit 2: Nope, just Kid

I'll volunteer to delete images that are far too blurry to be voted on :'D

I too would be willing to do it, but would also totally understand that, as far as dakka is concerned, I'm still new enought that people would wonder why I'm a MOD. Flagging them isn't a bad idea, except that it just makes the current MOD's jobs more time consuming.

To the OP, Does that include 25 pictures of the same damn things taken from every possible conceivable angle humanly possible? 3 or 4 yes, 25?!?!
I'd gladly lend a hand Modding the Gallery. "Que manical evil laughter" soon pictures, soon you will be destroyed! Ahem, well thats my chances of becoming a MOD gone.

What about splitting the Gallery into two sections, a Voting Gallery and a Standard Gallery, so when you upload a pic to the dakka server you have to specifically opt to put it IN the Voting Gallery. Otherwise it just gets entered into the standard Gallery. You can browse Either Gallery, but if your browsing the Voting Gallery then only pictures with voting activated will appear on screen, likewise if you opt for Standard Gallery you get all the random images.
Seriously though, I would be willing to lend a hand in the Gallery section if ever required.

Yes it does include those buggers as well. Now, I'm known to have multiple angles of the same mini, I just disable voting on side views and stick the voting "focus" on the head on or straight view. Who wants to vote on the way some CSM's arm looks? Sure if there was some elaborate freehand, then I understand.
Splitting the gallery would unfortunately probably be more work than it seems and then you'd probably have really good painters who are too lazy to click the little "Voting Gallery" button.

Oh I'm not saying not to have multiples of the same image, side, front, back shots etc. Was just pointing out that you don't need 25 pictures of the same damn thing uploaded. Also, thats a generic statement not specifically directed at anyone other than those who do this.
For those too lazy to click "Activiate Voting" then sucks for them that no one will vote on them. Plus can easily allow it to be switched on at a later date. I think the Gellery already has that function but in reserve.
As a guy with a background coding and computers, I completely agree, splitting the gallery and then sifting through all the images already uploaded will be one hell of a job.
Guess that'll be the job of a Gallery Mod if the powers that be deem they need or want one

I've been in the gallery a couple of times and I have to agree completely w/ Moltar, there should at very least be a "flag for" option. As it stands there is a (very cool) window that pops up when a photo has no tag description. I have a bit of experience with this sort of thing so I'll label it (such as "Warhammer 40K, Chaos Space Marines, Rogue Trader, Khorne Berzerkers") and submit it. If I can be considered a "trusted user" to identify and label a photo, it stands to (my) reason that I would also be a "trusted user" to flag a terrible photo.
That said... I need to go check my gallery and make sure none of those photos Moltar is talking abut are mine...

Hey all, I'm the gallery mod.
Since I took over, almost a year now, I've been going by these rules:
DELETE
too blurry
too dark
sideways
not wargame related
DISABLE
no miniatures in the pic (people gaming, real world inspriation)
Bits
Unpainted unconverted models
LEAVE
If there's a clear picture of a mini, painted or unpainted, finished or WIP
I know about the problem of people posting a dozen shots of a dull mini or of battle reports but for now the discussions I've had all favor leaving them.
One idea that I've come to like is making the 'disable voting' button the default so people ahve to turn on voting. Any thoughts on that?
If you see something use the DELETE tag, I go through and look for them every so often.
As for more gallery mods, taht's Yak and Lego's call.

Thanks, KK!
I actually think that setting "Voting Disabled" to the default would solve the majority of these issues. I feel like laziness is the #1 contributing factor to this dilemma. The "DELETE" tag is also an excellent idea and one that will probably be put to use, although it would be done sparingly.
Thanks for the response and I'm loving your new sig.

Pfft! Talk to me when you reach 5,000! I second the idea of having disabled voting as the default (and might have actually made that suggestion a while back too!).

Heh, afraid that sig is gone, it will be back in a somewhat more kid-friendly form soon.
I'll start a discussion on whether or not disable voting should be the default.

So we discussed this and it seems we're not going to make disable voting the default.
Voting is there as a sorting tool, to identify the good images and make them float to the top. Losing quality images because of laziness is considered worse than leaving bland ones around for voting.
But we're all open to other suggestions for how to make the gallery more useful and fun.
