A regular client approached me recently with a project/challenge. He wanted to take a themed Iron Hands army (inspired by the eponymous Black Library novel) to a tournament at the beginning of July, "so could you finish it in June? It's 2000 points."

I like a challenge. So here's a plog that should last no more than three weeks as I paint 2000 points of Iron Hands to best quality just as fast as my hands will let me!

I've assembled all but six models (which I should get this week, courtesy of http://thinkwargames.co.uk), so here they are:

Iron Father

The Iron Father will, of course, have a full servo-harness. He counts as a Master of the Forge and, after much consideration, my client opted not to equip him with either a conversion beamer or a power axe, so to give him a more dramatic look, I've kitted him out with a pair of augmented bolt pistols.

Tactical Squad

Apologies for the primed minis. I started spraying them before I remembered that I meant to take assembled pics to start the plog. They're made with a selection of bits from the Iron Hands bits pack from GW and some odds and sods from my bits box. I was especially pleased with the combi-melta, made from a standard marine meltagun and one half of a storm bolter from the vehicle upgrades sprue. It only took a little cutting and filing to make the pair sit impressively flush.

As you can see, I've left the right arms off eight of the models to make painting their torsos easier.

Scout Squad

My client likes sniper rifles. Can you tell?

I sacrificed a Telion head from my own bits box, because that's the sort of service I give my clients! I need to try to remember to put the visors on some of these heads before I prime them!!

Venerable Dreadnoughts

Yep, five Venerable Dreadnoughts. Like I said: it's a themed list. I'll be putting a lot of work into making each of these (who come with names courtesy of the client) into a true individual hero of the chapter.

The Tempest Land Speeder

A treasure of the chapter, this may end up counting as a Typhoon depending on the tournament organizer's decision. I really liked making this kit, which went together beautifully except for the cockpit, which was a bit of an awkward fit.

I've also assembled (but not yet photographed) a drop pod. This is intended to be for one of the dreadnoughts, but I've built it in modular form so that the client can run it as a transport for the tac squad if he wants to.

Not yet assembled is a Librarian (that will be extensively converted to fit into the chapter theme) and a five-man Terminator TH/SS Assault Squad, which I should receive on Wednesday.

Day 2 is nearly done (I might get another hour in this evening once the kids are in bed) and here's the day's achievements:

These aren't quite finished. There are some lenses to do and few clumsy highlights to tidy up (as well as a barrel to drill, yes). But as my aim is to do four models per day, I'm pretty pleased with progress so far.

Phew!

I'm managing to keep up the pace, so far. I finished the other five minis in the Tactical squad today. Tomorrow, Scouts. And as that'll involve rather more colours than thus far, ti may be harder to maintain the pace!

Anyway, here are some pics of the last five models in the tac squad:

As before, there are a few bits and bobs here and there that need tidying up or adding in (lenses, scrollwork and suchlike) but I'll get to that in due course.

Here're the pics of the drop pod:

As you can see, I've built it so that the infantry harness can be removed and the drop pod played as an Infantry or a Dreadnought drop pod.

Just started painting this.

I like where this is going.

The Tac squad sergeant is awesome. I particularly like the combi-melta arm.

He does, actually, have a real arm, not just a combi-melta.

Dammit. Why did that idea come too late??

Yeah, anyway, it's the angle of the photo. But thanks for stopping by.

I like projects like this, with strick time limitations. How many hours are you spending/plan to spend per day?

They look pretty clean. Sometimes I (as im sure many other people also do) feel I should have picked a quicker paint scheme. Hope the pace sticks for you =)

@S'jet - I'm really lucky, because this is my full-time job (well, running Precinct Omega is my full-time job and, while I work on developing my own games and miniatures line, most of the time spent on Precinct Omega is time spent painting other people's miniatures), so I get to spend 6-9 hours a day five days a week, painting minis.

I should add that these are far from my only project, though. I've just finished two small projects (some Flames of War tanks and a Deathwatch RPG character converstion) and have a bunch of other projects in-hand which are spread across about half a dozen painters who take work from Precinct Omega.

I have a Hordes Trollblood army, WFB Empire army and 40k Tyranids army all in progress too, although the Iron Hands are my current main focus due to the short timeframe.

Speaking of which, here's today's output:

I'm really pleased with how these have turned out and am looking forward to doing the sergeant and remaining scouts tomorrow.

Today's progress begins with:

The last five scouts, as you'll spot immediately, aren't finished (hence the smaller image). However, I'm not beating myself up over this failure to complete, because I've also done this:

This also isn't finished, but the work is so thoroughly broken that it should take probably only an hour or two on Monday morning to finish off both scouts and Drop Pod, allowing me to move on to the Land Speeder Tempest and the first Ven Dread.

And on another note, I built a Trollblood Pyre Troll for a Hordes commission, but I'll take pics of that when I've got a bit more to show for my efforts. Plus, I got back a bunch of assembled/primed termagaunts from one of my freelancers (whom I must now pay!). So at some point I'll start a Tyranid plog to show them off, too.

All go!

It's Monday, so I'm back.

First up, here's my favourite little distraction, Wombat the miniature poodle.

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"

But now I've got that out of my system, here's the finished drop pod:

And here are the finished Scouts, too:

Now I'm turning to the first dreadnought and the tempest. We'll see how far I get in the rest of the day!

Now to get back to finishing the first dreadnought and the Iron Father!

This is some seriously sexy work. I always thought Iron Hands was one of the more forgettable Founding chapters, but you're proving me wrong.

Can't wait for the dreads to pop out.

This is the Iron Father, commanding the Strike Force.

He's still WIP, with a few bits still to do on the mini and, of course, his servo-harness which is still being primed.

I'm tearing through the work, today. I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that my wife has taken over as my business manager, so I spend all day with her demanding progress updates!

This is the Venerable Tagus, first of the three tank-hunting dreadnoughts in the army. Still WIP, of course. The decal on his right knee went crooked while it was setting (probably an errant thumb on my part!), so I've removed as much of it as I can. I'll paint over what's left and lay a fresh one.

Forgemaster Vult:

I might do a little more on him once the whole army is finished - I like to go back over each model and just touch up here and there - but otherwise, this guy's all done!

Just got a couple of Dreads to finish today.

Love the Princess Bride reference

Also, you need to teach me how to speed paint (or indeed actually sit down and do some painting once in a while ) as your stuff looks great and you are really churning it out

I have to admit that painting a mostly-black army really helps. Not sure if I could paint, say, White Scars this quickly.

Although, with the help of my trusty airbrush, I suppose it could be done...

We'll find out soon, I guess, when I start work on my next major commission - a Tyranid horde.

@1-i - A brush in this case. My airbrush isn't good enough to let me do light sourcing on such small areas (although if I get the GK commission I've just finished negotiating, I might get to try it!).

Two more dreadnoughts (nearly) done:

Venerable Sepron

And Venerable Gaumech

There are a few bits and pieces still to be finished (not least adding their searchlights and smoke launchers), but the models are basically finished.

Over a black undercoat, paint Astronomican grey and allow to dry. Then wash with Badab Black and allow to dry.

Over that, paint, from the centre outwards, Astronomican Grey/Skull White with increasing amount of SW to more-or-less pure SW.

For some reason I really like the idea of the Marine hero with 2 Bolt Pistols and the final execution f that Servo Harness is exceptional!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

A quick finecast review, based on my time with the Librarian.

1. I make no comment on cost. My clients pay for the minis.

2. To cut, drill and file, the minis are almost unnervingly soft. Even compared to plastic, these models are easy to work with. I can't deny that the speed with which I built and converted this mini was remarkable.

3. The mini itself had a few bubbles and two miscast areas, plus a bad mould line from a shifted casting. However, it was nothing I hadn't seen before on a metal model (except the bubbles, obviously), and cleaning the problem areas and repairing them with GS was rather more simple than on a metal model. The amount of flash was considerable, but easy to clean up and much easier to spot than on a metal model.

4. The quality of the detail was undeniably superior to that on the metal model. I've heard some arguments that the detail was identical on the metal models, but just harder to see. This is patently not the case.

Overall, what makes this a nice mini (and it is a nice mini) is the quality of the sculpting, not the quality of the casting. As a result then, given the choice between a metal version of the model and a resin one, with no price differential, I found the resin one easier to work with and convert and far faster to assemble, so my choice goes with the resin.

As an old-school, lifelong gamer/hobbyist, the lack of an amount of "heft" in my mini is mildly disconcerting, but I suspect I will enjoy working with Finecast more than with metal equivalents - especially when I start tackling large monstrous creatures and similar.

Finecast gets a thumbs-up from me.

However, clamp packs are horrible. Why do they have to be sealed? Could GW not have used the same clamshell packs as Hasslefree, Privateer or Battlefront? The only message I get from the clamp pack is "we don't trust you not to nick our stuff if we don't heat seal it". The general size and proportions of the pack are good, and the inclusion of an painted example on the front is an excellent idea (albeit one that other companies had years ago), but why the heat sealing? Why?

And now I return you to our regularly-scheduled plog:

Ancient Gdolkin
