Hi all, I'm a fairly new player, having only reached my first 1000 point army every a few weeks ago.

Against Orks I did fairly well, but against SM it's not so good... I've been trying different tactics, but none with much luck (deepstrike/infiltrate etc)

My biggest problem is the lack of manuverarability. The force I faced last night had 2 rhinos and a landspeeder. By turn 2, I had alot of chainsaw weilding SM right in my face, and some devastator squads sat at the back taking wounds of the Tervigon and Trygon.

Also in the second game I rolled a double 6 for Trygon deepstrike and ended up off the board, doh! Anyway, here's my list -

HQ

Tyranid Prime, 2 x Bonesword, AG

Troops

Tervigon, AG, Catalyst, cluster spines
10 Termagants
8 Genestealers
3 x Warriors, 2xBonesword,
10 x Hormagants

Elites

1 x Zoanthrope
2 x Hive Guard

Heavy Support

Trygon, AG

Everything in there seems to do pretty well, other than the hormagants and termagants, usually dying to flamers very quickly. The genestealers always do nicely IF they come on the right side of the board. The warriors with boneswords always do nicely IF I can get them to the opponents tough enemies, they killed the Terminator captain with a hammer last night without taking a wound. The trygon owns, IF I can get him near anything. The problem is, all these IFs. With the SM having these cheap rhinos, jump infanty etc, I'm never choosing combat. The terminators with power weapons always jump out next to the trygon, the warriors always get tied up with low cost SM, and the gribblies always get flamered to death.

What hints and advice can you guys offer? I'm struggling to get away from my table edge right now! All advice and tips welcomed. I'd rather not change my list hugely, as i just want to learn how to play it well...

Thanks all!

You've got a pretty solid list here actually. I'm a Space Marine player personally, but I've fought Tyrannids enough to know a good bit about them.

For my two cents I'd say drop the boneswords from the warriors and the AG from the Prime (and run them all together if you aren't already). Drop the AG from the tervigon as well. He doesn't need to be in CC unless you have no other choice.

Also, you may want to consider getting either more stealers as they can devastate marines if used properly OR get another MC so your enemy has to choose which bug to shoot first.

Something to remember about terminators is that they only DS once, so if you take a mawlock you can just burrow away... Otherwise I don't see any real problems in the list not mentioned already.

I never have problems beating up Marines.

You need more Tervigons to simply overwhelm him with gaunts. Landspeeders? They are like cardboard. Go down really easily.

Record:

8th edition:
Tyranids: 5-4-3
Orks: 4-2-1

5th edition

Orks:18-5-1
Tyranids: 17-10-4

6th edition

Tyranids: 6-4-1
Orks: 3-1-0

I can get the landspeeders down no problem, but he does the scout move with them, flamers something small, normally wipes out a handful of gaunts, then the scouts get out and tie something up for another turn. Just bogs me down!

What are you guys saying!?

Solid list?

your units are too small. Termagants and Hormagaunts die like newspaper in the rain.
as for the zoan? It have a 18" ranged attack and is easely killed before it gets into range of anything worth shooting,if it is walking. take 2-3 (3 may be too many for a 1k list) and throw them in a pod.

I do agree that you should have some more stealers. if that unit gets targeted for fire, there will be no more Stealers. maybe have another unit of stealers or fill this one up.

Also why the Hormagaunt? They are small in numbers too and they have no TS which is a MUST against SM.

Also a Trygon in a 1k army is eating up lots of points. So personally I would Remove it, and fill up some of the other units.

If you want to get really fast to your opponent. Then I don't think this list will please you :/

My 1000pt list was:

HQ1 - Hive Tyrant: TL Brainleech, Old Adversary, Wings
E1 - 2 Hive Guard OR Zoanthrope in spod
T1 - Tervigon: AG, TS, Catalyst
T2 - Tervigon: AG, TS, Catalyst
T3 - 10 Termagants
T4 - 10 Termagants
FA - 15 Gargoyles

With a few points left over for another termagant or gargoyle I think.

Standard list of hive tyrant and gargoyles be jumpy and tervigons and gants be walky!
