So i've hit a bit of a winning streak as of late for 40k, so i thought i'd try my hand at fantasy, i made my list the night before(looknig back it was very sub-par) hoping to catch a game with a mate of mine, so i let him know so he can write his list.
The next morning i get there and he hasn't done it, instead looks at my army and tailors his list against it, needless to say i got pretty annoyed. I played the game with all my fury, eventually winning with like 8 guys standing, this was after me double checking everything asking to see rules etc. Next game i rule nazied the whole time, i think it may have been residual fury from the mornings tailoring.

Does this make me TFG?

Anyone have TFG stories, or times when you were TFG? Or things that turn you into TFG eg.list tailoring

Well. In your defense you became "that guy" in response to someone being "that guy".

But yes, that's still being "that guy".

I don't really actually play anymore because there are too many "that guys" in Warhams. (see also: Forge World threads)

This is sad but terribly true, at my FLGs there are about 4 of them i had one claim he could fire at my avengers because he could see the bristles on his helmet? For reference the bristles are like 2mm high lol. Stood there telling me about how he could see it, but not to worry since i get a 4+ cover save needless to say, GW staff wanders over and referees it to "that guys" favour, i procceed to lose 7 guys from 10

Makes sense, i do spend alot of time in tactics, the other half is spent in P&M blogs. I do love fluff though! Most of my armies have a background story/theme to them, i hope i don't evolve into TFG

"TFG" is rules lawyering in the absolute extreme and just acting like a dick.

Only this game and i felt pretty bad afterwards about it, so i won't be doing it again. I try to make it as enjoyable for both players as possible, but tailoring lists really bugs me

being a TFG is NOT based on what you do at all, its 100% based on how other people PERCIEVE and FEEL based on what you do.

If you look through the rules, check everything, and win at all costs, it doesnt make you that guy. What makes you that guy, is if the person across the table from you percieves you as that guy.

It depends if the other person is ok and doing the same thing, or if they are annoyed and generally arnt having fun playing against you.

Generally you become that guy, when the magority of people you play do not have fun playing against you because you do things that annoy them.

Could you tell that your opponent was annoyed by what you were doing?

My rule of thumb is everyone in a competitive setting has bad games once in a while, but if you took a poll, and 75% of the people you play against didnt enjoy the experience, your that F'ing guy :(

I too am TFG, but not quite the same way... I will ask my mates the average values of their codices when I play them, and taillor my army list to that average. This has to do with the fact that I am still more or less picking up the game, and as new armies come out, or I face armies I've not played, it helps to know what the realistic average is vs theoretical average and how I can expect my army to perform. If i feel like being a particular nuisance, I will ask what FOC units my opponent is fielding, but do my best to avoid the models/units. I don't spend much time tailloring my lists at all though. I have learned already that taillored lists do worse than generic lists, because if you taillor a list, odds are, your opponent doesn't much care, and will use units in unintended ways, which then throws a wrench into your plans.

I actually waste more time deciding who gets what special weapons, or if I should just kill my special weapons and get more units instead... this decision process has little to do with my oponents army list though: those decisions have already been made on the FOC side of things....

But why go TFG if he was a mate?
Whilst no one likes TFG, it may arguably be more acceptable to morph into one if the guy accross you is some sweaty, screaming brat with a half painted/proxied army playing GKs who thinks everything can move 24".

You can't decide yourself whether you're that TFG - it's something that other people label you with. If you're annoying everyone, then yes, you may as well wear the namebadge - if not, I'd say relax and don't worry about the self analysis you're doing.

List tailoring is a pretty contentious point - it's not automatically a 'dick move' or proof of TFG. Certainly the actions of the other guy in this instance are pretty unfair - since the OP doesn't have the same advantage. However, in my gaming group, it's pretty common to announce what army you're planning to bring, let people know what you've got in your army if you're going to take something weird, and to build your list in accordance to what army you're facing. This is absolutely fine, as long as both people are on the same page.

Crap, I'm a hobbyist!!

Had a friend become TFG by accident.

Visited him while he was sick and he asked if we could play a quick game of 40k.

He must have wanted it really quick, picked the cheesiest most deadly Marine selection against Chaos I could think of (and after seeing my army).

I basically picked units I chose as objectives to kill since it was NOT objectives and I was going to die.... hurt him well but was obliterated as expected.

Later-on he apologized and said that was the most cheese he had ever fielded.

I said no problem, next time he can email me his list and we can play again, same conditions.

There were truly epic moments that happened so I did not mind so much.

Wow, massive dick move! I always complement the younger players or give good feedback ot encourage them more, some people take plastic men very seriously it seems.

I'm TFG in the sense I've bought about half of the codexs in part because I'm interested in the list and stories, but mostly because I can never trust my opponent to play by his own rules.

If I have to explain WBB to another necron player in the middle of a game I'm going to punch a baby ... (among other things)

I've read most of them for the exact same reasons, mainly because i've seen people check the codex and still make things up. not crystal clear on them all though so if i forget a few i just ask about it. I like fluff too, just not marine fluff since it always seems to be "and (insert name here) Destroyed the (insert monster here) in a single punch and so saved (insert place here) from destruction." lol.

WBB is hilarious to watch people figure out! Good thing i've a mate who plays necrons so i know all about it

OT: i wouldn't call that being TFG, it's more just following the rules. As long as you don't go crazy with reinforcing the rules i don't think your TFG
