As the title says I am wondering if you have a gun and what you own it for, personally I own 3 firearms, a Smith & Wesson MP45 for open carry/self defense purposes, a remington 700 for hunting, and a weatherby shotgun for S&Gs.

P.S. I am posting this mainly out of curiousity, that and its an interesting topic

I had to vote no, because at this time I do not own a gun myself.. My assigned weapon sits in an armsroom in my unit.

When I get back to the states, I will be getting at least one firearm, most likely a 1911, for "home defense."I have owned several varieties of muzzle-loading rifles, from a small .32 cal to a .54 cal Thompson Center.

Were it legal for me to own one in its proper state, I would own an M249, 240B, and an M2 .50 cal MG.. for home defense.. or something like that.

I own several old long rifles, all of which have historical value and are thus valuable to me.

Fairly soon I will most likely be purchasing a Glock handgun for self defense. Just not sure if I want the 9mm or .40.

Personal defense I would say 40, better stopping power, 9mm has the irritating problem of just going through the person with minimal resistance(from what I've read), that and at least where I live 40 is cheaper than 9mm

My job requires that I carry a sidearm. I usually carry my Kimber Custom II or my Glock 22. Both are nice and reliable and I've been getting good enough to fire every round in the mag through a 6 inch hole at 25 yards.

Aside from that, most of the more fun guns I shoot with are owned by the department, but I get to bring home. =)

Not personally, but my dad (who is going senile) has a 22 rimfire rifle with scope, a pellet gun and an (unlicensed) shotgun (single barreled, manual load).

I enjoy the recoil on the 22, the shotguns quite fun to fire, but the pellet gun is just crap (the bores actually tilted badly).

I own a shotgun for home/apartment defense. I even got to use it when some drunk undergrads tried to kick in my door, not firing mind you, but working the action to intimidate.

Several AK based rifles, a pair of AR15s, an M1 rifle, SU-16, a few others.

Why? Sport shooting, hunting, and defense.

Sadly, had to leave half of them out of state when I moved to California (Good lord I hate the gun laws here.) but the AR15s I can rebuild into a CA-legal format. Currently my SU-16 is my go-to rifle for targets and defense.

One day I will move to Nevada, and I will jump into the pool of NFA-item ownership with a suppressor stamp for the AR15

I like shooting too much to move to CA, and unfortunately not 21 yet so I cant apply for any of that fancy stuff

Aye. I'm really hoping the supreme court slaughters CAs laws. I want texas-esque CCW and magazines that hold more than 10 shots again. I moved here because I found a nice lady while at the same time finding cheaper schooling than in TX.

All ya gotta do is wait. Save your pennies though, and get a good can. I was going to go get an AAC SPR/M4 before I decided to move out here. Then that money went to the moving van. -cackles-

I own lots of guns, and I do it for many reasons. Home defense (sure a baseball bat works, but firearms are so much more effective), Recreation, hunting, and for the far out possibility of S*** hitting the fan this can include zombies, russians, aliens, North Koreans (HA!) or that far off day where America just royally pisses EVERYONE off and they all come after us. lol

Edit: I see we are listing our firearms
Ak-47 with Druganov stock and scope mount
Rock River Arms AR-15 with many nice toys and mods

Mosin Nagant made in 1943
A very nice over and under shotgun that I take bird hunting

Illegal to own them over there.
Dont know a lot about guns and makes etc bar what you "learn" from COD
Can I ask how a gun is classed as a home defense weapon?
Is it down to accuracy and ease of use as opposed to spraying an ak47 all over your bedroom?
What makes one better then the other when used in the home?

Well my opinion for a home defense gun it ideally has lower penetration, easy to move around in a building, also semiauto is a huge boon imo.

Aye typo ftl.

Lower pen is good how? Stops one hitting bystanders etc?
Semiauto is when you fire say 3 rounds with one press of the trigger?

You are right on the first point, you want to hit who you are shooting at, not the kids in the next room, and semi automatic is everytime you pull the trigger a round is fired, burst fire is 3 rounds when you pull the trigger, automatic is it fires til ammo runs out.

Well...Firstly, it's a gun you use for defending your home. That's it. It could be a musket, or the latest greatest thermal optic 100 round mag behemoth with lengths of 1913 rails all over and then scopes bolted to other scopes bolted to bipods...you get the idea.

For what you choose, it's all down to what you want with a few criteria:
Since US law sees no difference between pointing a gun at someone, shooting him with a rubber bullet in the leg, or shooting him through the brain with a shotgun, one might as well get the one that is most effective at causing the opponents body to -stop- should firing be required.

Since US law holds one accountable for a bullet they fire that misses the bad guy and motors on through your house and into your neighbors home, it must be something you can reliably hit with, and will not tend to shoot THROUGH the target even when you hit and set you up for the same problem as if you had missed.

For me, the AR-15 is king of the hill. The superheavy 5.56mm loadings I ran in mine had terminal effect similar to what I see for shotguns (which are about as good as you can get for sheer destructive potential at short ranges.) while simultaneously having a far, far greater reach (I can semi-reliably hit a silouhette with my AR at 300m...can't get anywhere near that far with a shotgun, even with a slug.) and better performance against someone wearing ballistic armor than a shotgun. And less recoil than the shotgun. The weapon itself is also lighter and handier than most shotguns. Detachable magazines with more ammo than a shotgun. And to top it all off, a stray 5.56 is not going to be any -worse- should I miss than a stray heavy pistol bullet or shotgun slug/heavy shot.

In short...Unrivaled versatility.

Interesting stuff. Surely though the AR15 is a bit overkill in your house? I mean how many crack addicts are going to be wearing body armor and be 300 yards away?

I think hes saying that if said bad guy is behind an oak table in cover he can punch through it, and otherwise I would say because shooting is fun in general, so shooting targets that are farther away is more fun imho

It's not about home invaders having body armor. The 5.56 is not as prone to going through several walls like a 9mm or similar. Thus less risk of shooting not only the perp but your neighbour and dog as well.

You can also mount a light and sights on a carbine, further ensuring that you can make a positive threat-ID and hit what you intend to hit.

Not one bit. Some crackhead thinking of busting into my home to help himself to my possessions or girlfriend and makes a violent attempt at it (Because remember kids: Even in castle doctrine states, they have to present a deadly threat before you can shoot them!) does not deserve a sporting chance. At all. He has earned every disadvantage I can possibly lever against him.

The capabilities of the weapon to go a long way, to shoot through body armor yet also present little more overpenetration risk than .45/9mm pistols, are icing on the cake, rather than the ideal you should strive for.

Going with the rather outlandish (in the already outlandish possibility of crackheads trying to break in...again...) example you present: If the body armor wearing crackhead is 300 meters off, why am I shooting at him rather than ducking, picking up my cellphone, and calling the police to deal with this <CENSORED> for me? But he isn't beyond my reach even if there was some odd situation where shooting at him was required. Thats the point, it offers options.

I think hes saying that if said bad guy is behind an oak table in cover he can punch through it

Aye, that's part of it. Home invasions with people wearing armor are increasing in number in some places, thankfully not near me yet. Mostly southern and central AZ last I checked. But here again, the interesting mix of penetration without added over-penetration presents you with options.

You can also mount a light and sights on a carbine, further ensuring that you can make a positive threat-ID and hit what you intend to hit.

These can be mounted to any firearm, and since I do not live alone, the importance of IDing what you are about to fire on cannot be overstated. It is my opinion that a weapon for defense of home should not be without a light. The red dot sights I generally use, it's so much easier to pick up the dot in the real world, but it's a lot more optional than the light is.

My 1938 Mauser action 8mm Spitzer Kruppstahl tappered octagonal barrel with a claw mount scope brings all the Mauser nerds to the armory. Can I get a WOOT WOOT?!

Other than that, since we are listing firearms...

1942 9mm Luger side arm, original byf (Mauser Oberndorf Fabrik) all matching parts Veteran bring-back. Includes original case.

1936 7x57 Chilean Mauser

The above listed custom action Mauser sporter.

K98, all matching parts

Pending sale on StG44, still waiting on confirmation but it is supposed to be all matching parts, no import stamp, and a 1943. Still a bit skeptical, but I will see.

As to handguns, I have always favored the .40, and it has been the caliber to which I have leaned in the past. I have always found the recoil and managability of .40 to be only slightly greater than the 9mm, while also being able to pack a far bigger punch. Naturally, for home defense ammunition plays a fairly large role. Hollow-points are preferred, as they don't barrel through walls quite as easily as a normal "slug."

While simultaneously blowing bigger holes in the person attempting to kill you.

I'm afraid I don't know germany`s firearms laws very well at all, but I'm amazed that you can obtain a STG44 at all? The only ones on offer here are largely vaporware and exceedingly expensive, and most of -those- are semi automatic only.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Really look at the 17 vs. the 19. I know you naturally slide towards the larger, but many shooters actually prefer the slightly smaller version. I hear good things about the Gen 4 series. After about 6 months of production startup difficulties, the newer units appear to be problem free.
