Hey there
I've been inspired lately (notely by Hits_the_spot) to start a Space Marine Army. This is a *rough* list I'm planning on. I'm going to get my hands on a codex in a few weeks (my friend no longer plays). I'm also going to brainstorm fluff and paint schemes, so mods, please don't move this to Army List, 'cause that's part of the overall project  Please  I'll give you a cookie.
I'm going to go for a holy/eagle look.

There we are for the ROUGH list. Once again, I'm not getting ahead of myself or anything (maybe a little  ) I'm just thinking ahead. I'm not going to get carried away (maybe a little  ) and ruin this army like my Guard army [being redone ground up >.< ]. I'm going to start with a tac squad, carefully painting and taking my time, then a second, third. Then I'll do my champion. Then my Dread, etc etc.
Please, comments, questions, concerns, critiques, etc are greatly appreciated and needed. Let me know if I'm missing something crucial or if I have something unneeded. Also a rough point estimate would be nice

Scouts can't use drop pods, and Terminators don't need them since they can deep strike anyway. Devastators can be alright, but their weapons are very expensive. You're better off getting a Predator with an audocannon and lascannon sponsons for anti tank, or the same with heavy bolter sponsons for anti infantry. Sniper scouts are good against monstrous creatures, but close combat scouts make for a great interference unit. Also, I personally love Vindicators but not all Marine players do. A Land Raider Crusader would also be a great investment for something like your honor guard or close combat Terminators. These are already frighteningly expensive units though.

Uggh Ultra marines... just kidding. looks like a good list Predator vs vindicator would depend on the situation I prefer vidicator, but i play BA so I get closer faster. Why put scouts in pods infiltrate them to save points

To SRM Right, I forgot about infiltrate and deep strike.  Like I said I still don't have a codex in my sweaty little hands, so yeah. Personally, I don't mind having an expensive army, (point wise), besides, I can always leave out a rhino, or the scouts or something.
As for the predator, I'd probably focus on anti infantry because I don't face a lot of tanky armies (Waagh, Nids, Tau).
Scouts: Should I get one of each then? I think that'd be the perfect balance..
Land raider cruiser.. I'll think about it, it's really not a bad idea
To Nicholas Not ultramarines per say, just using the models. Maybe an ultramarine subchapter. I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking predator. My friend (codex friend  ) has both, and the two times I fought him with my guard (and when his brother with his waagh) his vindicator seemed to sit around scratching it's balls, err treads, the whole time.
Thanks guys, I'll post a new list. I'm looking at previous fluffs of Space Marine armies. I'll work on it soon. Probably post some mission logs in the fiction section (I'll post links). Thanks again for the quick and helpful response.

I would get rid of the devastators completely. Vindicators are really good for everything(strength 10 AP 2 large blast ordinance). Also, 5 tactical squads aren't needed. Two maybe three(with rihnos or razorbacks) because they're so expensive. I would recomend assult terminators over normal, but that's just me. Assult marines don't do much in my past experience for their high point value so I would replace those with bikes or speeders. Especialy speeders if you are going to use scouts. Use what fits your playstyle best though!

Thanks, but I think the devastators would come in handy. As for the vindicator, the stats seem nice but I still feel something wrong. I'm going to go with the predator for now, just on a hunch. I was thinking, I'm going to put in a lot of terminators and a lot of scouts. I want to have a trademark, but both Termies and Scouts seem good in game, and fluff wise Scouts are fantastic. I feel like having a load of snipers could be nice.
I'll think about it and post a new list in a few minutes.
I'm only putting in one assault squad. Damn, I can't wait to get this army started. I don't want to wait for the Codex  Maybe if I just start with the tactical squad?  Just one.. I'll just wait for the sergeant and the power weapon, but I can still do the bolters
I'll do that  I'm going to go out tomorrow and buy stuff

The Sons of Oceanus were promising marines, crews and scouts from various companies who were drafted without choice nor with consultation.
If the Champion Charon saw it fit, he would send his Honor Guard (Heracles and Achilles) to abduct the soldier and introduce them to their new family. The Sons of Oceanus are a secretive Chapter, the Emperor and few others know of them, the rest is myth, which explains why they share similar colors to the Ultramarines, from afar the difference will not be made. (Black and Blue, instead of Yellow and Blue)

I've got some Dark Angel Veterans, I'm going to shave off their symbols and make them into regular Veterans. Those are the "Vanguard Veterans" I was talking about, my mistake Automatically Appended Next Post: Army Reserve/Recruits
These are models I already have, already painted etc. My main force will be comprised of entirely newly built and painted models.
The Reserve will be distinguished by a red right knee plate and a red helmet-hawk. NOTE: The model above is in the reserve, and I painted him as such. I'm going to go out tomorrow (if I can get my lazy rear out of the house) to games-workshop, get some paints I'll need and 10 Space Marines. I'm building a bunch of reserves
Reserves will also be used in case of injuries (broken models >.<  . Thanks GirlPainting, you showed me to use cork plates, so I'm using actual wine corks to make my bases, and I can't get over how they look  I'll submit pictures of my reserves being built soon. (I'm particularly proud of my 3 Assault Marines  ) Automatically Appended Next Post: I've got a bunch of new photos, I also found some old Marines in a bag
I found my old pride (now that I look at it it's kind of gakky) He was a commander of some sort. I might make him my Reserve Chapter Master. I also found A land speeder with no flying base, neither of the marines have arms, and the multi melta fell off. Oh well, I'll see what I can do.

PIC HEAVY (30 pictures) The baseless marine at the beginning is the same as the based one at the end. Going to do another post with the other 12 pictures. The commander was one of my most recent minis before I stopped. These are amongst my 10 most recent minis after I restarted  I like the evolution of my prowess.

Hmm.. I'm missing a lot fluff-wise. I need

Librarian
Masters of the Fleet, Watch, Recruits, Arsenal, etc.
etc..
I need to have a captain (no problem) and a Chapter Master (I'll use a commander of some sort) Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm going to re-boot my army. The marines I've painted (though I'm VERY happy with the job I did) will be repainted, etc etc. I will keep the list, though it will be edited, I may change the name (and therefore those of the units), I WILL change the color scheme, and I'm going to work a lot on the fluff before building or painting anything.
