yeah,

Talisman is getting a new board expansion! check this out!

"playing the Dragon expansion, players will encounter even more choices and strategic challenges, including a new, dual-sided Inner Region for their heroes to conquer. The alternate sides allow you to face familiar terrain along a path that requires all new tactics, or to venture into the Dragon Tower, where a hero’s every step meets opposition by the Dragon King’s minions and leads him ever closer to an ultimate confrontation with the Dragon King, himself."

Very exciting.
My main problem with the corner expansions is that the game area becomes massive and the game can take longer, this like the old tower, replaces the inner regions so games should last the same ammount of time.

I have only 2 of the small expansions so far.
Reaper Expansion - which I liked quite a bit only because it is fun making the Grim Reaper chase after other characters. The playable characters were great even if some were a bit unbalanced.

Sacred Pool Expansion - I liked one of the extra endings but the other two we had to change the rules for a bit because they were rather boring to use.

Ill probably get this one just because like you said, the change to the middle of the game board should not make the game last any longer.

And my game group tends to kill each other alot so games have lasted over 3 hours.

How does the FFG version compare to the old Citadel / GW version? I have the latter, which I love, but it obviously doesn't get any support anymore and FFG makes some awesome stuff so I was considering picking up the new version.

Which edition 3rd?

From the top of my head things I don't like

No more exp counters, your forced to hold onto the monsters as trophies and turn them in, a lot of times you will not be able to get an even 7 and lose out on exp. Also you no longer collect exp from board kills, although there are much fewer of those.

Death is more painful and now removes all of your exp upgrades and lose all equipment, which I don't believe happened back in 3rd, and instead used to only lose your equipment. So every time you die you have to start all over making it hard to catch up.

That doesn't stop you from playing death penalties your way however.

Things I like:

Player Characters are a little more even IMHO. In 3rd edition I remember we literally would not allow certain characters because they were miles more powerful than the rest. In 4th edition ANY one can win and with 4th edition being a bit more random than 3rd, luck plays a big factor.

Luck is a major factor in 4th edition, more than it ever was, I have been the most powerful character on the board untouchable by other players and then the board ends up killing me. Some may not like this style of play, but to me it adds a bit of fun to the game knowing you could die at any moment.

Less emphises on monster kills and more on events. Only maybe half or even less of your exp will come from monsters, most of it will now come from getting good events and rolling high on them. Yes this adds more to the luck but to me thats what Talisman was all about.

Overall I think 4th edition is superior to 3rd in many ways.

1st/2nd I believe. Waaaaaay back in the day.

You died, you started a new character, so that's more similar to the new game it seems.

Sounds like I may have to give the FFG version a try. It seems like a much better homage to the original Citadel game than GW's own 3rd edition was.

yeah,
Noir Eternal, I agree with your summary.
This is probabily the most fun version of the game.
But I actually like using the enemy cards as 'trophies' to gain experience as it means less tokens tracking the game, there's more than enough tokens in the game already!
I've never minded trading in more than 7 points of trophies to get the upgrade. I'm usually just happy to get the upgrade!
