Evening all,

Another angry thread concerning GW got me thinking about NOOB players (hate that phrase but it seems to be the way to put it).

I got into wargaming through Hero Quest, for all you NOOBS it was a board game (correct me if I am wrong on this guys) designed by GW back in the late 80s early 90's (not sure) and distributed by MB games as a mainstream family board game, and thats exactly how I played it. I remember full well playing it with my Mum Dad and Bro. Eventually this lead me to the Cambridge GW and well the rest is a long and sordid history.

What gets a NOOB into it now, how did you find out?

Is it the computer games, seeing a GW or Hobby store?

Love to hear the stories from all you budding gamers and also how all you old warhorses got into it all

If your going to do something wrong, do it right!!!!

Because you said "budding new players"

Noob: Someone who does not know how the world works, what is going on, or anything.
They aren't as new as annoying. A newbie is someone new but isn't an idiot. A n00b is the most annoying thing on this earth!

So one is a dumb idiot, and one of them is just lacking experience which at first glace may seem like a noob.

But a newbie can learn and grow, while a Noob is forever the same dumb idiot.

I think.

it was my mates, they tried getting me to start collecting for years and i wouldn't, i loved the stories though of these genetically engineered super beings protecting humanity yet still getting driven back by the horrors of the universe while having these normal humans with tons of heavily armoured tanks backing them up to save humanity to the last bloody morsel.

:3 then i started collecting guard :3

If you hate the phrase so much, why did you keep repeating it, and in all caps?

Me, I got into 40K through some friends and my fascination with the minis. I would stay up late, reading White Dwarfs and old Citadel catalogs.

From what I've seen, it is mates who do get them into it.

Or Siblings (several of the boys in my club started because their brother's did, or their schoolmates did).

I started by buying a blister of minis to paint.
I got introduced to gaming conventions through this (one was on a couple of blocks away from the store at the time).
I found miniatures games and became friends with certain people whom I am still friends with.

I didn't game at school.
My siblings thought it was stupid and a waste of time (and still do). I'm 42.

My friends didn't get me into gaming. Gaming got me my friends.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

My friend got into Warhammer 40k from me, I got into it from my cousin, my cousin got into it from his brother, his brother got it from one of his friends at school, his friend got it from... I Don't know.
But anyway, most people get into it from someone they know.
A lot of people dont find the game on their own.
Though with the new Warhammer 40k video games being released, especially the new shooters, will probably get more people into the game!
(I am a newbie leaving newbie-dum who fate only knows wether i will fall into being a NOOB or will become a actual gamer)

Simply having people playing draws people to ask questions and watch. We play at out FLGS 2 days a week and have gotten at least 8 people into the hobby in the half a year we have be doing it regularity.

Others get into it from friends who have, others still from playing 40k video games and reading the books.

Also some people find the game by seeing the models from the window at the local FLGS, though half of them think the store is a video game store.
(Which annoys the employees)

I got into it twicw by 2 different friends who had already started it, one of who was really mad with it.

First I got into it when my friend only wanted some people to game with, so I seen the models played a few games as CSW and because of the Bloodthirster mini i started up a proper army, but not to game with. I mostly painted for the majority of the few years I was into it.

The next time I restarted it was sometime duing college, one of mates was asking around and I told him I used to. So I met him at the GW in Glasgow, randomly funnily enough, and its relit from then on. now I mostly paint and game.

When the rich rage war it's the poor who die

First of all, through Space Crusade (I believe bought from a toy store).

Following that, I picked up a WD I saw on the shelf in WH Smiths, my first magazine purchase (many of you guys will be familiar with it, WD127, the seminal Eldar issue)

I feel sad that this option wouldn't be available to pull in new players these days, on both counts.

However, Mantic have tried to step up and fill the void and now offer this option as a way of getting new players into the game:

Dwarf King's Hold, an all in one board game for 35 quid:

For me and my gaming group, we found the hobby when a friend found our nearby GW because we all liked LotR and he convinced us to join the hobby...eventually my friends moved on from LotR but i stayed with the hobby for a bit longer just playing games with my brother. Finally i moved onto 40k because of the imperial guard tanks, and reintroduced my friends to the hobby through dawn of war, it helped that having another member of the group playing 40k tabletop as well.

My cousin got into the hobby by different means from the average gamer. He was introduced to LotR through a magazine that ran for awhile called "battle games in middle earth" came out monthly with some models, how to guides and battle reports. he ended up buying about 100 goblins by buying the first issue multiple times.

My nanny actually, she must have been in her late 40's or so, and didn't have any children. She saw us playing with our plastic green soldiers and decided to make a gaming board for us with terrain and everthing on it. So she went to a hobby store and bought the first "How to Make Terrain for Warhammer" or something or other like that. Anyways we, my brother and I, being about 8 and 5 at the time, loved looking at the pictures of toy soldiers. So eventually we bought The Battle for Macragge when we found out there was a GW in the city near our farm. Been playing ever since.

Also, n00b is mostly derrogatory and is a derivative of newbie.

I use to play magic and at the local hobby store I always watched the 40k players with their die and awesome looking little dudes and always wanted to play, so I got married to a woman who supported my nerdy ways, we bought a few battle forces and we're hooked

SparkeyG and I got into it when they opened a GW store in the local mall. He used to play battletech, back in the late 80s/early 90s. I'd painted miniatures for years, but always avoided GW stuff because it looked cartoony. But we wandered in and decided it looked fun enough to try.

I started playing 40K 16 months ago, so still new to 40K really.

I've been a GW customer on & off for 20+ years buying minis for role-playing, and buying RPGs when they used to sell them as well as being a fan of Space Hulk.

Back in 2004 I started playing Star Wars minis, a fun game that I still play, but it's now cancelled. Mates were playing 40K so I figured I'd join in, turns out it's a lot cheaper than I expected - well, cheaper than being a Star Wars minis completist! And I surprised myself in that I am now very much enjoying model making, the one thing which had been holding me back for many years.

I bought Assault on Black Reach and was lucky enough to pick up one of the final Ork Megaforces and have been enjoying the game ever since. And personally I'm enjoying being a GW regular customer again.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Me and my roommate loved strategy games, sid meyer's alpha centauri, red alert 2, etc. So eventually we decided the next logical step was miniature wargaming, so we did some research and found GW to be the best choice in terms of cost and support, mainly because you can get so much stuff second hand and everyone has heard of it. Now he moved away and I am faced with trying to get someone else hooked so I can play against someone, and so the hobby spreads...

I have orks and old school dark eldar. Also my roommate collects space marines, but refuses to admit he plays warhammer, so I claim they are my own in public.

Well we get the new players in by letting them use small 500 point armies and let them see how the game really works. Helps when we can show them pretty and flashy stuff at the same time we are showing them the nitty gritty of the game.

I got into the game after seeing it played when I was 12 years old, then I dove headfirst into it and have been playing on and off for 9 years now. The community is what has kept me around. Good times.

I was originally introduced to gaming through Mage Knight (way back when it started), and had wanted Warhammer ever since I first saw it. Friend finally got me into it several years later.

Currently, my brother and I are recruiting our two younger brothers. They've seen our stuff, and thought it was cool, and now we're helping them into the hobby.
