Does anyone know where I can find some cheap O-scale trains (I believe this is the best scale for 40k?), trying to make some terrain involving an imperial rail yard and wold like to convert a train.

First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.
Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.
Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.
Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me. |

HO too small huh? Even for guardsmen? Because the price difference is staggering! Automatically Appended Next Post: http://www.discounttrainsonline.com/O-Scale-Freight-Cars-Bachmann/O_FRT_160_1.html
Not bad deals on O scale cars... but the Locomotives from that site are kind of pricey. Of course, if you don't care if it moves (i should imagine not) than skip the loco or buy a broken one off ebay/craigslist!

HO is more like 1/76 scale.
At those kind of prices for O scale models, I think I would try and find wheels separately and build the rest of it myself. The bogey unit could easily be pour moulded as a single piece mould resin casting.
Railway wagons are essentially straight sided boxes, easily made from foamcore board. Detail can be added with embossed plasticard, architectural detailing parts, and so on.

HO is too small, S scale (1/64) might be usable but is rare and expensive. Also search for Lionel (most popular O scale trains in USA). Some manufacturers do historic armoured trains in 28mm scale but not cheap either:
There also was some scifi manga train toy (something with -o-rama), right size and good start for conversions, but I can't find it ATM.

I have to agree, if you are feeling up to and and quite artsy, then I would suggest attempting to make it yourself, this would cut costs, and you can even post up pictures and show us some stuff ;D

It looks like the separate wheels are pretty expensive too.

I would be tempted to make my own wheels. I reckon a half a tank road wheel, with a rim made of plasticard, would like nice and futuristic and would mould easily as a simple one piece mould.

Thanks for the responses, though I apreciate the detail of some of lionel and other model train makers, price is always an issue for me (sadly).
Though the prospect of completly making a custom train from the wheels up seems interesting. If its 100% custom I might be able to offer them as kits down the line since you don't really see that many 40k styled trains.
