Well, it's come to my attention that there are a lot of tcg players at many LGS, and was wondering what you think, but, let me tell you what happened:

Friday night, I was playing with my tyranids in a 1500 point game, on a designated warhammer table, and we decided to put the game on pause, so, we go to the counter to get a snack, not 3 minutes later, I saw some teenager scooping all my tyranid models into his arms and dropping them into the case, ultimately chipping the paint, and breaking a couple of claws. I go up to the kid and tell him in tactful manner that I didn't appreciate what he did, and to please give back the designated table, and to not mess with our models like that. There are a lot of these types, who are very disrespectful, there are also those who are dudes, and are cool.

So, dakkadakka, what's your opinion on the tcg players?

Just a jerk. TCG players are pretty much the same as wargamers.

I don't know what TCG means.

Since apparently it is a gaming term, I'll move the thread to Dakka Discussions.

Are trading card game players different to other kinds of people?

Ask them if they'd like you to bend on of their mint Black Lotus

As a former long time tcg player, you have your decent people and you have your jerks. I'm sure the same is true with war gamers. Though people who play magic competitively are more apt to being jerks. The general thought is that war gaming takes up way to much time, effort and creativity for their tastes. Why spend a couple of months building and painting an army that you custom made when you can just go online look up what is the top deck of the month, go to the card shop trade a bunch people for cards and sit down and play? For tcg players its not about fun, its about your player ranking and possibly making money.

What happened to you has nothing to do with him being a TCG player, just with him being an unreasonable moron. I know people who play TCGs and 40k, and I've met unbearable 40k players and unbearable TCG players. I've met far more horribly card gamers, but I'm sure the ratio of good to bad players is pretty similar.

I've had encounters where tcg guys would dump their giant folders of crap on tables people play on, push terrain and mini's in said terrain out of the way just so they could throw down roughly 10-15 packs of cards and leave the garbage there.

I've also had encounters where they generally kept to their end of the store by the computers, loving coined as the swamp, so it's a mixed bag really. All comes down to the people and what kind of actions they take.

It's no different from any other gaming group. Back in my Magic days, we were playing a draft out on one table while a Warhammer Fantasy event was going on at the other tables. One guy came over and told us they needed our table to lay stuff out on, while we were clearly still playing. Naturally we protested as it was a store event. He got disinvited by the store owner after that.

There's always douches in every game. There are just a lot more tcg players in general since the required effort for entry is so low, and there's no such thing as sportmanship scoring, so the absolute number of tcg jerks is larger than the absolute numbers of wargaming jerks.

My experience with the munchkins is pretty much spot on as yours...

Our local store ended up negating them as a factor by banning them, unless they came with a parent. It was a unanimous decision, and they ended up migrating to a few of the other shops around that catered to that sort of a clientel.... those shops ended up going under, by the way... it's that funny thing about Card Game players not buying anything in those other shops...

It ended up solving more then a few issues that were based around the same line of action as you describe here, not to mention a few of the older gamers going off on them for trying to ... interact with gaming already in progress.

Sporstmanship scoring is a flawed system anyway, and does nothing to curb unwanted behavior. If anything it just hurts the people it's supposedly protecting, unless you really think the guy being a colossal dick the entire game is going to give you a good score, in which case: looooololololol.

You're not going to get anywhere by being passive-aggressive and docking them on points, mumbling under your breath, or bitching about them online long after the fact. If someone is being a douche you need to bring it to the TO or store owner's attention, because they can actually do something about it, including banning that player from the store if they continue to be a problem. Giving them 0 out of 10 isn't going to do gak, because if they cared they wouldn't be acting like that in the first place.

As for the topic: no different from any other kind of gamer. The idea that people who play one type of game are inherently superior or better-behaved than another is kind of stupid and easily proven wrong. 30-something-year-old wargamers are just as capable of acting like disrespectful children as people who play card games or video games.

A lot of Magic players, Pokemon players and YuGiOh players at my local store think the tables are only for their use and wargamers can feth off. They also smell bad and get upset when warhammer tournaments are held and they can't use every table themselves. Yes, in my area, TCG players are MOSTLY donkey caves. Not at all of them. Most. Yet of course, they call the warhammer players names and blame us for things...typical.

The magic players that I've seen generally have little respect for anything. They push your stuff out of the way if they 'need' a table, throw there trash on the ground and are generally loud and stinky. I've even seen one magic player that brings his ~5 year old kids up to the store and plays until the wee hours of the morning while his bored kids are doing whatever or sleeping in the corner. I think there general lack of respect comes from the fact they don't have to work at there hobby and can pretty much buy wins so they treat everything around them as expendable.

I actually like playing card games every once in a while but I would never hang out with that sort of crowd.

@ everyone complaining about TCG players trying to "reclaim" tables: In addition to the person themselves being a dick, this is ALSO a fault with the store itself. They should be policing this or have a system set up(claimed tables with a board proclaiming who's using it/what system it's for that day, or separate tables/rooms for different game styles). Complain. If they don't do anything to fix it, that store's not worth your time or money, honestly.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

I play 40k at a store which has maybe 50 times more MtG players than wargamers. Some of them are donkey-caves, but most are very nice people.

Those who are donkey-caves don't understand that you can't sit down and play 40k. My favorite line from one of them was "Hey buddy. Can you stop moving? I get thrown off when people are in my peripheral vision."

What happens when the store caters to the card players and tell the wargamers to stop harassing the card players? Oh yeah, we quit frequenting that kind of store...

Good and bad ones. Frankly I feel sorry for the amount of cash TCG players dump into cards for the slim possibility to win money.

I'll take my cash dump and be happy about em. At least my models aren't outright banned... just takes some colorful conversions on my part and "counts as" to remedy.

Next time that kid does something like that, tell him you'll get a can of Dr. Pepper or Root Beer (depends on the brand, whichever one gets stickier), hold it over his cards, and calmly tell him that what that will do isn't nearly as bad as what he did.

Granted, if hey thought they were pre-paints (I have no clue, but some may be under the illusion we don't paint these things anymore), then it would have been next to no minimal damage. I'd be more pissed that you walked away for 3 minutes and he hit the table as though you had left... tyranid claws are notoriously fragile things.

Having managed a comic store and having been big into the card scene, they really, really are. It's a much younger crowd in general. They look at wargamers as old dudes who rely on "luck" and argue about obscure rules. Wargamers, in contrast, look at them as young and immature, relying on "luck" and taking their games too seriously. Both think the other side spends way too much money.

Edit: Card games are objectively better for tournaments, however. Not only can you get more rounds in, but the rules are typically solid after a mountain of FAQ/Errata.
