Well, here we go!
I selected a skeleton as my first to paint miniature, because it might be a more easier one to start with. At least, for what I have in mind: drybrushing Bleached Bone, then drybrushing a mix of Bleached Bone +Skeleton White and finally drybrushing Skeleton White. From there I'll see how the rest will be painted.

Yes, the pics aren't that great. I don't have a "miniature photographing studio" yet. I made a painting stick out of a piece of bamboo. Split the upper part so I could position the figure (which is hot-glued on a piece of sprue) in there quite easily. Why not on a base? Ehm, no idea. I like the painting stick, it's easy to hold and turn in every direction. I like the position of the skeleton. An open pose, so I can paint every spot without touching something close to the painting area. And it's like the skeleton says "come 'n get some!!!".

Woohoo, basecoated! Ready for the first stage. I've actually already drybrushed it with Bleached Bone, but I haven't taken pics of it yet.
So, whaddayathink?

I remember my first model, was also a skeleton. Course, back then the plastic GW used was beige, so I didn't think I had to paint it...
I guess it looks good, a bit hard to tell though as you haven't done much.

@ Saintspirit + snake: yeah, not much to see in those first pics. But it's a start. Here's some more: Don't mind the white on the axe and the shield, I'll fix that later. Next step is another layer of DB-ing, using a mixture of Bleached Bone + Skull White + few drops of water. Any tips?

have you got any washes yet? later on i would use them to better show the recesses...have you thought about a color to paint the eyes? for a dirty look of the weaponry i would just very lightly drybrush the metallics on... thus you get a nice scratched look to them...and then a heavy wash of devlan mud and badab black...spare yourself the trouble to add blood and gore to the weapon... i know if done good this always is a nice addition but i think seldom does anybody do this any good...also some different metalic paints on the shiled would carry the look of the mini forward.
keep up the good work, and welcome to dakka!

Nice work with the paint job. I was just wondering, is the figure one of the Skeleton range from Wargames Factory as I was thinking of buying a batch?

It's a GW Tomb King Skeleton I do believe. This painting reminds me of when I painted skeletons. Mine were a lot more blobby I seem to recall, on account of not gripping what Drybrushing actually entailed.
The thing you need to look out for when drybrushing over a black base is that sometimes the black 'shows through' the first drybrush. You can see that near his knee caps and shoulders. It will probably get remedied with another layer.

Thanks for the tips, Vik! I'm still in doubt wether to paint glowing red eyes or to just leave it like black holes. I have planned to paint (try ) NMM on the axe and the shield. But maybe it's better to start with some metallics and washes first. I do feel the same about blood. I want to do some tests on a piece of plastic first to be absolutely sure I found a decent recipe for blood. So that's probably something for a different miniature. Automatically Appended Next Post: @sluggaslugga: thanks! But how old were you when you painted your first custom?
@Rivera: ghosty is right, it's one from the Tomb Kings.
@ghosty: yes, I see it. Hopefully the next layers will cover it.
@Clumski: thanks for the encouragement.

at tim, there is a gore tutorial here in the tutorial section.. this might be a big help in that matter...iirc they used pva and some sawdust...and then some glossy varnish to get the wet feel ....you definatly need structure to get a convincing gory look...as for the eyes... you could go for a hollow eyesocket feel with some blue and then some whitish highlight...that would be unique...
i have yet to pluck up the needed courage to make an nmm attept... i know if done right you will feel a million more proud of the mini... but it is a veryy bif step...don“t want to frighten you tho...if your up to it... then do it^^

Thanks for the tip, I'll definately check that tutorial.
The eyes: do you mean a bright blue spot + white highlight in the middle of the socket, and then fading out further to the edges of the socket?

Yep good start mate, i would agree with vik about a wash , but it will kill of some of that lovely bone dry effect going on. maybe another dry brush after that , and if your gonna try non metalic metals , i will watch intently , as i havent tried that yet, heres link with a good tutorial for metals , this guy just won the crystalbrush competition , and he is an amazing sculptor too, not fair..:-(

@ neil101: thanks for the links!
Here's a small update, drybrushed with a combo of Bleached Bone, Skull White and a drop of water:
As you can see I did a bit too much around the teeth....
What should I do next:
- wash a layer of Badab Black and slightly drybrush/highlight Skull White
- slightly drybrush/highlight Skull White and wash a layer of Badab Black
- something else?

He's coming along nicely, you should try using a wash like Devlan mudd or some dark brown etc on the black and surrounding areas to add that aged bone look, plus it will really make the detail pop out!
Good work so far keep it up!

@Santobell: thanks, I tried your idea with a mix of Badab Black, Scorched Earth and some water. Here's the outcome:
Not completely satisfied about it, a bit too brown/orange for my taste. I'm planning to highlight/drybrush Bleached Bone+Skull White or Bleached Bone + Codex Grey. In a later stadium, I want to wash Badab Black again.

that sounds like a plan make sure you highlight the very edges lighter than the rest ,
found a cool reference pic i think yours looks very simialr , just needs more highlighting and then some dirtying up

Hey, I remember those skeletons from the first spoiler pic. Aren't those from Jason and the Argonauts, or some other movie from that era?
The second pic is somewhat what I had in mind. Thanks, Neil!

I'm pretty sure that the first pic is from "Jason and the Argonauts" (all power to Ray Harryhausen). I finally decided to buy a set of the Wargames Factory Skeletons which have just arrived and they are pretty awesome - if you need more details as to price and availability let me know.
