Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place for this thread or not firstly, so if it isn't, have at me.

Me and my wargaming friends have recently started rogue trader and it got me wondering. How do imperials name their worlds, i came up with Kribex VIII for the first campaign but wasn't too sure about it?

So how do they name their planets? And is there a trend they seem to follow

Thanks in advance.

Rogue*
Imperials tend to name the system and then the planets in the system e.g. Farfield system, Farfield I, Farfield II.
Though sometimes the planets have names un like that of the system.
No idea how they name them, whoever discovered them gets to do it i suppose...
There was a planet apparently named Sodallagain by a very bored explorator.

Me and my friends do it by typing random words into a translator and turning them into latin, then changing those words a bit until they're something we like.We tend to come up with stuff like Belias, Recuba, Atrum Luxis, etc.

You can also pick any name from history or mythology. Pollux, Lenclos, Lustig, etc. Several of the planets tend to have additional qualifiers, like Pollux Prime, Lenclos Secundus, or Lustig Majoris.

Hope this helps.

It doesn't hurt to take names from literary history:

Caliban/Prospero - The Tempest
Fenris - Norse Mythology
Etc.

I would suggest naming one of the planets Chan IV.

Or you could have guessed it from words like fridge (refrigerator) and frigid.

Planets are named like towns and cities, they can be named after anything. The only difference is that some systems use numbers as mentioned above because the early explorers ran out of ideas and got lazy. It's like in some places there are bridges which are called things like No 1 bridge, No 2 bridge or in cities like New York where the streets are numbered rather than having real names.

fridge derives from the latin word, plus the cold water bath in the roman bath houses was called the frigidarium

In a game like Rogue Trader, one of the best tools a GM can have is a list of named planets. Just name them any old way- Grey Haven, Salvation II, Aureon's Forge, Fortress.
Then write a brief description of what the world might be like.
So, Grey Haven - Originally an Administraum hub, lots of filing and data storage.
Then add a twist:
Devastated by an ork invasion, the unsupported populace have devolved into a feral state in constant war with the remaining feral ork tribes, completely unaware of the value of the data they routinely use as fuel for their fires or bedding for their children.
Hey presto, you've got enough to go with for a visit, and can add stuff on the fly.
Combined with a general list of names (or three lists- one for Nobles, one for normal Imperials and one for Ferals/Hivers) you're pretty much free to run your narrative confidently and fluidly.

I remember that. I had to read the passage 3 times before I got it.

Seriously though, either the planet's population has already given itself a name, or an explorator gets to name it whatever he feels like.
