Note: This is not normal where I live, please read.

As I was walking to college with a friend this morning, I kicked a small (what I thought was) a stone, but it sounded very metallic, I picked it up and upon closer inspection it definitely had a bullet like shape to it (note: one that had been fired, without a case).

It's very rough with plenty of scratches on it, and it has a pale grey centre to it (seen from the base).

It's about a cm tall, and the circumference is around 7mm in diameter (it is slightly squashed along the diameter, though).I looked on google for a cross-section and it appears some have an inner steel core, which led me to believe it was a bullet.

I live in the UK, and have a very limited knowledge of anything other than a shotgun, so would appreciate any advice.

I've taken some pics and uploaded them to imageshack, if you would care to take a look.

Pic one.

Pic two.

Pic three.

There you go. I am only asking because I have no clue, so please don't flame if it's not a bullet!

Thanks for the help.

I think it looks more like a metallic turd then a bullet, but that's just me.

That is a bullet sir. Looks like a 9mm ruger round with a lead core and a FMJ.

FMJ/ball ammo is either practice level rounds (and cheap East Europe rounds) or military. That narrows it down not at all...

You live in Hereford, no? I can think of a fairly good reason why you may find the odd bullet or two thereabouts...

You thinking of the SAS? I guess it could come from there, but right in the middle of town, far from the SAS camp...

Who knows but it would seem a likely source.

Not even sure if that has been fired or not - there doesn't look to be much distortion to the shape. But then again, I'm not a ballistics expert.

Yeah, I does make sense. Well, at least I know it is a bullet now, had it confirmed on a few other forums.

Thanks Dakka!

I first read Hereford as 'Hungerford' and thought 'you rotter'. Now, I feel bad.

But yeah, could be SAS.

Unlikely to be the SAS they're in Credenhill and he found it in the center of town...
Maybe someone picked it up somewhere and dropped it in town...

Either that or it was a hell of a ricochet.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Don't worry, the bullet looks old, ancient even. I doubt it was fired this past decade...

Yes, that is a bullet. Lead core judging by the white residue rather than orange rust, looks like it's been beaten around on that side walk for a while. A few months to a year or two.

Certainly could be someones attempt at a home made FMJ. Or could have been fired. Ricochets even from pistols can fly for a mile or two, depending on air pressure and angle.

If you have access to a caliper, some measurements could be useful, as would putting it on a scale. I cannot judge its size, or whether it was fired very well in these pictures. It's really badly scratched up.

I'm trying to find the cuts from engaging a barrels lands, and I cannot see any, but the scratching damage is so severe I cannot be sure.

As beat up as it is, it looks like it got caught up in the treads of a tire and has been beaten around the pavement for a while. It looks like there might be some striations from the rifling on it- indicating it has been fired. But the tip isnt flattened, so it was fired into something soft or possibly up into the air.

Are there any military bases nearby? Or possibly a gun club or Police training range?

No gun clubs AFAIK and the police in Hereford probably don't have guns...
I know that some people have guns for hunting but those tend to be shotguns..
The only military base is the SAS camp but that's a while away...

look, its only one bullet, when you find two or three of them and/or bullet holes in various objects, inanimate or otherwise... THATS when you start to worry...

It's badly blunted and scratched. It's old, that's obvious. You should trying bringing it to someone to have it dated.

The SAS only moved to Credenhill in 1996 - before that, they were in Stirling Lines which is considerably closer to Hereford. Regardless, it looks to me like it has got pinched in a boot tread or tyre tread as ArbeitsSchu said and deposited that way. Its not uncommon to pick up foreign matter when on the shooting range.
