I'm just getting back into video games and I'm definitely not up to speed as to what is awesome.

MK9 is a shoe-in as is L.A. Noire and probably Resident Evil 5.

What would you recommend? I heard there was a Samurai Showdown for the 360, it any good?

Well, Space Marine comes out in a few months.

Gears of War I suppose is a tentpole franchise.

Borderlands is a lot of fun if you have friends to play it with.

Ultimate Marvel Alliance 1&2 are fun multiplayer co-op games especially if you actually like having your friends in the same room.

Mass Effect 1&2

Street Fighter IV or Blaz Blue depending on your sensibilities, or both. For 3D Virtua Fighter 5.

Not sure about Sam Showdown on the system, maybe they were thinking of Soul Caliber IV?

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Samurai Showdown Sen, yeah its, okay. From the few times I've played, it feels like the Samurai Showdown I played on the 3D0.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samurai-Shodown-Sen-Xbox-360/dp/B00311KAGY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309370279&sr=8-1-spell

My main issue is the pad struggles with it, thus making things trickier than they should be. I've been thinking of picking up a Street fighter 360 pad, just to help with the movements.

As to games I would recomend.

Civilisation Revolution

Mass Effect 1+2

Dynasty Warriors 7

Oblivion, although you might as well wait for Skyrim

Halo - any of them, although you have the option as a new owner of playing Reach, then go through the rest in the correct order.

Bayonetta

Saints Row 2, might be better waiting for Saints Row the Third though, that looks mental.

Holy crap dynasty warriors 7?? Man, didn't think it would get that far.

Shame about samurai showdown. Loved the old one and was actually pretty good at it in the arcade.

I'll definitely look at the mass effect games.

What about Assassin's Creed? Looks fun. Can you play 2 without playign 1 first?

*Edit*

Well obviously I could, but should I?

Assasins Creed is fun, and you can play them without any other part. Anyways, Im on a boycotting thanks to Assasins Creed Brotherhoods ending.

Assassins creed is great, ummm...i would play the first one first, it should be pretty cheap by now.
My recommendations are Halo series(duh), but my favorites are the FALLOUT series. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are amazing! Both are very long and fun games, and both are very cheap by now. you can play it through first or third person(i prefer first), it is a massive free roaming game(which i love), they both have great storylines. I have spent about 200+ hours on Fallout 3 and 150+ on New vegas, so far. They have HIGH replay value. Dont miss these games!

Regarding Assassin's creed 2, yes, you miss some story stuff, but I think they do a recap from what my brother said.
Although I didn't list it, I really enjoyed Assassin's Creed. Not picked up two yet, as up until a month ago, 80-90% of my gaming time was taken up with WoW.

As to Dynasty Warriors, aye still going, it had a slight lull with DW6 as they messed around too much, but DW7 is potentially the best they've ever done, even better than DW3.
Added ability to carry and switch between two weapons, which does a special attack when you do so. Added a ex combo which only works with a characters favoured weapon. Can select what weapon you take, two musuo options. You earn skill points for each officer defeat, to buy upgrades on the skill tree.
Plus biggest improvement, was dumping Free mode for conquest mode. Basically get a huge map like Empires, but you use to unlock weapons, mounts, do battles and unlock characters by doing their legendary missions. Just added lots of fun to the franchise and made it more worthwhile to play through the various characters.
On top of that one of the DLC packs is the Yellow Turban Rebellion level from DW2, still one of my all time fave levels.

So aye, can't recommend DW7 enough.

I highly recommend playing through the campaigns in the Halo series, they're bloody brilliant in terms of scope and narrative (and they're SO pretty).

Beyond that, Gears of War 3 is released in a few months so play 1 and then 2 if you find yourself liking them.

I personally pay Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2 on the pc but if your Xbox is where its at then go ahead and look at those titles as well.

My Xbox 360 must have would be:
• Halo 3
• Halo Reach
• Team Fortress 2
• Half-Life 2
• Half-Life 2 Episode 1
• Half-Life 2 Episode 2
• Portal
• Portal 2

All great games with fun game-play and story-lines.

Gears of War and Halo. CoD is always a must have due too the shear amount of re playability.

This; and the PC version just went Free to Play, so there really isn't a reason to NOT get it on the PC.

I have it for both, I got the Xbox 360 version when I bought the Orange Box in 2009 and only recently got the free PC edition. I do like the new weapons in the PC version and character hats and armor changing.

Essential 360 games imo are:
Mass Effect 1 & 2 (be ready to buy DLC for ME2)
Borderlands
Portal 2
The Orange Box (best deal for a 360 game, it's 5 games in 1)
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Assassins Creed 2 & Brotherhood (read wikipedia for the story of the first game, it is not worth playing)
Fallout 3 Game of the year edition and Fallout New Vegas
Red Dead Redemption
Grand Theft Auto 4 complete edition

Avoid the Call of Duty games for online play at the moment, every COD games is the same, after 3 months if release the casual fans stop playing them and only the hardcore remain and it is no fun, but pick up Modern Warfare 3 when it comes out, multiplayer will be a blast for a few months.

Pick up Halo Reach for an online shooter worth playing on xbox live.

And if you do get all those games good luck finding the time to play it all. :-p
