This is the only forum I saw on a Google search that says Starcraft 1 has ending credits that asks GW to not sue it, which fascinated me to hear of just today. I'd really like to follow up on this! I couldn't find that on Youtube (it just has Brood War credits), so does anyone have pics of this?

Here's another thread that mentioned it a while ago: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/284524.page

Seeing how few people play video games, beat them, and read all the credits, this is either a fun hoax or something we've missed for 13 years. Guess which is more probable.

From what I gathered, it's actually the latter. Can anyone check their Starcraft 1 game? Mine is four hours away from me.

This really doesn't sound legit. I did a quick search and after briefly scanning the credits, I didn't notice anything mentioning GW.

Aye, I saw the same one but that's just Brood War credits. That link's actually one of the first places I noticed people referring to that quote!

Anyone here actually have a copy of Starcraft 1?

After seeing this thread, I dug out my copy of SC1.

It was scratched beyond readability,

Lol. Starcraft and Warhammer 40k are similar yes, they are both sci-fi, that doesn't mean one is copying the other..

Yes zerg are similar to tyranids who are similar to 'Aliens' who are similar to the bugs from starship troopers who are similar to imperial guard who are similar to the robots who are similar to the terminator who is similar to necrons. I guess everyone copied gamesworkshop, and GW took no ideas from anyone esle. It's similar in idea and different in finish so not a big deal.

Plus Blizzard knows how to run their business and makes more money.

Funny story actually, WAY back when blizzard was still going by their other name when they were only 12 programmers (forgot what they were called) they actually asked GW if they could use their universe for a game idea. GW didn't like the idea of their universe being put to a video game and told them no XD They still pretty much took most of the concepts and even put war in the name True story G4 did a documentary on Blizzard, found out a LOT of stuff They even planned a game that was pretty much an interactive cartoon that they released as a book a LONG time ago (the book about the clans, my memory is failing me hard today )

Funny story, actually. This is so WRONG, it's painful.

The first GW video game to be released was in 1991, 3 years before Warcraft, and also the very same year Blizzard(then known as Silicon & Synapse) was founded.

Indeed. If at all it wouldn't be GW having a problem with a computer game, but simply the license between the two companies not having worked out. I heard that GW had a deal with Blizzard, but for some reason it got cancelled - and Blizz, being stranded with a half-finished game, simply chose to complete it anyways and build their own setting around it.

As far as StarCraft is concerned ...

GW invents Tyranids ->
Blizz likes the idea but thinks they look stupid, so they make Zerg ->
GW thinks the Zergs look better, so they re-design 'nids

It's everyone being inspired by everyone, really.

Which is just one of those internet rumors that no one knows the origins of. I find it hard to believe, especially since GW had licenses with other designers for their games during the Warcraft development years and if you ask, GW studio employees who were there during that time will chuckle about it and tell you it isn't true(to their knowledge).

Games Workshop and Blizzard do feed upon one another pretty regularly, at this point. Originally though, it was Blizzard that borrowed heavily from Games Workshop (who of course drew a lot of their inspiration from many other sources besides).

Considering former GW rules writer and all around cool guy Andy Chambers wrote Starcraft II and works at Blizzard now, I'd say there's a pretty healthy connection there. In Warcraft III one of the Dwarf heroes would say "This warhammer cost me 40k!" or something similar, and the old Blizzard art style was influenced pretty heavily by GW. There's rumors of Warcraft I being a Warhammer Fantasy game that got dropped by GW, but I can't find any proof of that at the moment.

Come on guys. This is a urban legend.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Apparently it is urban legend, aye! Also @ Brother SRM, I checked some vids here ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQPfEjCNHnI&feature=related ) and nothing comes up. I could swear I remember it to but I can't find that quote!

I don't know if you could call them just "similar" seeing as my mates and I all call it "Starcraft 40k".

First time I ever saw it, I walked into a room where a bunch of guys were lanning, look at my friend's screen (not being told what they were planning) and said "Wow - they've made a Rogue Trader computer game and I didn't know about it?"

I've heard the same rumours that GW refused Blizzard the rights to make the game 40k universe so Starcraft is the result, but just as a rumour.

Warcraft: Orks and Humans(Known as Warcraft I nowadays) was supposed to be a WHFB pc game, but for licensing reasons was released as a non-Warhammer game. Anything after that is only rumors, though terrans, protos and zerg do have striking similarities to space marines, eldar and tyranids. You can't really say that they "stole" the ideas, as the same elements happen to appear everywhere across both fantasy and sci-fi genres.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Gathering the Informations.

The main core of the 'urban legend' isn't that GW had a license with Blizzard (which would make no sense, since they had licenses with the 'Big Names' in strategic PC games at the time) but rather that Blizzard with Warcraft: Orcs & Humans created it to match Warhammer's setting perfectly.
They, after having the finished product, approached GW and asked for licensing rights.
GW pretty much said what any smart company would in that case(NOPE) and required them to change things up.

That's the few parts that I can find that at least make some kind of sense rather than GW at that time trying to sue someone or anything like that.
