I go to the Angel Names section but problem with that EAch Angel stands for something
Like Angel of Fury or Angel of Fire.
Angel of the Moon
etc.
Go into the latin words stuff and you will find a few cool names,
also Greek names, Normand Names, etc. What ever your space marine chapter or race's culture is.

I open the codex and look at the name provided for the given HQ.

Oh, Ghazghkull Thraka! Mad Dok Grotsnik! Baron Sathonyx!

To keep from annoying other players, if you are going to give special names to your HQs, MAKE SURE that you still have their actual name on your army list.

Don't just put "Grufftoof Snazwang" on your list, put: Big Mek "Grufftoof Snazwang"

If you're renaming a special character, put: King Herpa Derpa playing Ghazghkull Thraka

Etc.

I let my opponents name them. I play necrons normally and my Lord earned the name Douche C*ck several times over. I decided to keep it.

Depends. Normally I avoid giving a character a name unless there is a good reason for doing so. That being said, several of my Marines have little spots on their armor which is obviously intended for their name. In those cases, I do a little research into something that is vaguely reminiscent of the background for the army. I play Salamanders, so i went with names of lesser deities associated with Vulkan, or with prominent members of the cults dedicated to him.

For IG, you could take the names of old war heroes or the names of actors from old war movies. For Space Marines, plunder whatever mythology they were plundered from (depending on Chapter). For Necrons, still the last name of one of the more foreign cast members from I Robot or The Terminator. Eldar (or Dark Eldar) steal an obscure elven name from Tolkien or Salvatore. For Orks, steal a name of one of the orcs in the books Orcs, or Grunts. Hope this helps. It's perfectly okay to be unoriginal as long as you A) arent getting paid for it and B) your audience never finds out.

Usually the names just come about.

For example, someone picked up and wrote "my name is BOB!!!!" on the bottom of one of my bloodcrushers.

Thus, his name is BOB!!!!!!.

Depends on the army. An ork will be called a mix of two ork words, like Grimkog or Badgit. A IG guy will be something Russian-y or a play on a famous general's name or something like that. Marines have latinish names. Necrons don't have names. Tyranids have names given to them by humans based on their apect/nature or something like that. Tau and Eldar I don't know

Make sure to keep context in mind. A Latin name for...say...a White Scar...wouldn't fit. White Scars have a Northern-China-Mongol-raider kind of feel to them. Likewise, most IG regiments have thematic roots in some historical military group, and so the names should be theme-appropriate.

I go for roleplaying type names, being a roleplayer and storyteller myself. I look through the codex and/or other sources and adapt names I see from there, try and find common suffixes or prefixes etc. For example, my Archon is called Arketh. My Tau Commander is Firelash, which sounds good in English, but in Tau I think it would sound a bit silly... a lot of "Shas" in the full name. But it stuck. I like naming my otherwise nameless HQs

I go researching for something suitably epic in Tau, and then just make names for them

Of course, other people are not as receptive to this as I am, and thus pick names based on how silly my battlesuits look. For example, my old commander was dubbed 'Donuthead' simply because he has a ring, similar to half of a donut, sticking out of the side of his head. Go figure.

For a space marine army type on google or what ever search engine you use and type a something like "LATIN NAMES" and you get both male and female latin names. SOme of them sound really good on HQs

Mine is easy:
Shas'O

He needs no name other than his title.

When I had Space Marines my commander was named after myself.
Captain Matt.
It's catchy!

I think that your general should have a name that has something to do with you (eg, has part of your name in theirs or some other personal signifier), since they are supposed to represent you on the table. As for other characters, I might name them if they preform consistently well on the table, were converted really nicely or are a particularly old model that has been fighting for me for a while.

I also know people who will have a model that was put together in an odd manner/broken, but will perform on the table amazingly so they will give them a nickname (one friend has a broken Kroot named "Stubby" who has killed a Chaos Lord among other things).

All three of the hechatonchires from Greek mythology, Cottus, Gyges and Briareos, are represented in my Templars list as various HQs. You can get some great names by simply "borrowing" the names of some lesser known deities. I'm starting to run out of male Titan names now though...

I only name guys if they do something really cool/awesome/funny, ie something that earns them a name. My last model I named was an ork Big mek with a Shokk attack gun, his name is Jack. He blew lots of SMs away and most of them were termies! I always say "jack not name, jack job!" Haha, it gets me every time!
