I'm looking for an MMO to start playing over the summer to offset the boredom, but first I want to see if there are any good ones that are free to play(Or at least less that $15 a month? F you Blizzard Entertainment). Any suggestions? Is so, please explain why the game you are suggesting is good, because I really don't know much about online multiplayer RPG's.

ANd no I don't really hate blizzard because of Starcraft 2 but charging 15 bucks a month to play a game which you should be able to just play if you buy the discs is just ridiculous. (Referring to WOW obviously)

Lord of the Rings online went free to play awhile ago, as is Global Agenda. You can try those.

LOTR Maybe, but are there any others? I'm looking mainly for a Fantasy MMO, and isn't Global Agenda scifi?

Heh, normally I would choose scifi over fantasy any day, but it just usually doesn't seem to work out for MMO's.

Not even close to true. WoW really ruined it for a lot of MMO's as the expectations for subscriptions were so high that anything less than 10 million is seen as a failure. By going Free to Play Lord of the Rings online has actually gained subscriptions because more people tried it out and found out how good it was.

A strange place

DDO is free to play...maybe that's something you can look into.
But if you want better weapons/armour...you're still going to have to pay.

I'm currently playing rift and i'm enjoying myself, it's just too much fun to be the tank.

to the OP, incase you have been living under a rock or WoW was your first MMORPG... thats how nearly every MMORPG has been. you go to the store, buy the game, get your free month and then start pating your monthly fee. thats how the pay model works.

as for some freebies.
Archlord (i think this is still around)
Rohan Online (even though it sounds like Lord of the Rings, its not)
DDO has been mentioned and i think i might peek at LotR Online

non fantasy there is World of Tanks which is fun as sin.

for non-free but cheap there is Horizons but i havent really check to see if this is still alive. it was a fun game with loads to do (being a dragon was sweet) but they had development issues.

Actually I would consider the impact WoW has had on MMO's to be a good thing. It raised the bar to such a level that for others to compete they had to change the business model. So now almost all MMO's are free to play but you can buy extended content and there are some very good ones in my opinion.

A few that I downloaded for free and play AND enjoy without purchasing extra content:

D&D Online
LOTR
Age of Conan

Also Warhammer online has its merits but its pretty mucha lesser version of WoW imo.

Champions online is fun.
City of heroes is going F2P soon.

I would suggest DDO, it's suprisingly fun. The quests are all short dungeons. It's a much more story based game than most MMOs so you won't be sitting around wondering why your doing all these pointless tasks.

Oh I know, but I want to see what it is; or rather, what they did with the class.

It is a mixed bag really. It has had both a positive and negative affects on the genre.

Any of you guys played Dead Frontier?

It's a free Zombie Survival top down web based MMO, was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

Can you explain why youd have to hate yourself? I only started playing MMOs a couple years ago with WoW, so I must be missing something

And it's free now.

Word through the grapevine is that City of Heroes is going free to play.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I played LOTRO and WoW, have to give credit to LOTRO for being more entertaining for some reason. I don't know why, but I like LOTRO more than WoW enough to pay for it sometimes.

Id rather pay $15 a month for a mmo that is good, then worry about $15 a month and play a crappy mmo.

There is a reason Lotro went free...

Guild wars 2 has potential, but im not holding my breath on it, Graphics still look terribad compared to newer games.

LOTRO is better than WoW in every way (except for the PVP, which you have to pay a monthly fee to access anyway), though it's comparable in many ways. It's no skin off your back if you want to try it, and it's one of the few 'free' to play MMOs where you can access the entire game just by playing it.

Champions Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Anarchy Online, Ryzom and Global Agenda are all worth a shot if LOTRO doesn't end up appealing to you, though most of them have a limit on their free service, and you will have to cough up money for them eventually if you want to experience the full game.

@Spyder68: LOTRO went free because Turbine's other major success, Dungeons and Dragons Online, benefitted greatly from their awesome FTP model. LOTRO has benefitted greatly from it as well, as few people are willing to grind for literally everything they want to buy, and having an indefinitely free game is a great way to attract millions of people. It is not a poor quality MMO by any means.

1) A free $15 a month is a brand new game for your Xbox every four months.

2) Graphics don't mean jack. Especially when you have games like AION that look beautiful but play like gak.

Dungeon Fighter Online? Vas is Das? *TO GOOGLE!*

Hmmm, looks interesting, though the fourth thing to pop up for it being "Dungeon Fighter Online Hacks" isn't very insurring...

Dunno. Would you recommend the Priest for a brawler type of character? Or is he the Heal Bot?

WoW has its first 20 levels free now. Of course, levelling up to
20 is probably stupid easy to get you to the paying customer
threshhold sooner, but it's worth a shot.

Actually funny thing IIRC in DFO they dont really like it if you heal all that much. You'll have plenty of healing items yea but theres not much of a "heal bot class". Priest or Fighter is good for hand to hand although I dont play them so dont take my exact word for it. Priest classes usually have buffs and maybe some magic to make them better while fighter has all the crazy moves like dirty tricks or throws
