In short, I don't like them.

I got some new DE models and I found the material to be very brittle and a huge amount of flash (or whatever it is called in this material). I don't think the detail is any better.

I do like how little they weight and how I don't have to pin the limbs.

I guess it is an end of an era.

Flash is actually a good thing.

its a sign that the mold was filled completely and you won't have any missing bits.

it also isn't that hard to get rid of if you have a file and a good sharp knife is normally sufficient.

its Resin so you will have to get used to its brittleness. it is much more bendy then Forge World resin(which can actually be bad for you)

I think the weight issue alone is enough to justify the switch. I hate metal models that have large awkward parts.

The finecast models actually paint up pretty well to. I'm actually pretty fond of them.

Not having flash is a better thing, since it's a sign that the mould has been made and/or used properly.

You know you won't have any missing bits when you look at the model and see that it doesn't have any missing bits. I think the various finecast threads so far have proven fairly conclusively that the existence of flash is no proof of a complete model.

OK PEOPLE! A REMINDER!

RESIN IS TOXIC! Resin when you breathe in "Any" of it. It "NEVER" Escapes your lungs or other parts of the body! It is completely Unable to Possess in the human body!
A while back when resin models were first being made. People started coughing up blood because the resin dust and particles they inhaled cut up their insides. They had to have special surgery to have it all
flushed out!

So a reminder to ONLY work on sculpting, removing flash, filing, cutting or working with resin models "outside only".

Also a good wash with Dawn soap and a light cloth is advised but be careful when doing so!

Once the models are primed and you washed your hands after working with the models and removed any clothing like just pants and shirt that may have the dust on them. You should be fine to go!

Surprised to read that Finecast is brittle, given the many remarks about how flexible it is.
I thought brittle was an opposite of very bendy.

Not sure what resin Studio McVey uses, but my first little play with it makes me wish every metal mini I have was made of the same.
It is so much easier to clean up.
Also have to say that there are no imperfections, little flash and I can't find any seam lines so far, touchwood.

There is a lot of spring in the more delicate parts and if this is like Finecast then once GW sort out problems with casting, all I can say is it was the correct decision to switch to plastic resin imho.

The resin plastic mix GW is using is apprently perfectly safe. Obviously not good to breathe it in though but it should be harmless.

I've bought two Finecast models.

The first one, Astorath the Grim, was almost flawless. The jump pack was a little rough in parts, but not too bad. It had plenty of flash, but nothing a basic hobby knife couldn't fix (and in far less time than it would have taken for a metal mini, where the flash was often harder to see).

The second one, Skulltaker, wasn't quite as good. The very top and very bottom of the mold hadn't been filled properly, so a couple of the skulls at the bottom of his cloak and the very top of his head were incomplete. Easy enough to fix, but had I bought it from a shop I would have returned it.

As for the material, it's a very bendy, not brittle, resin. I hate to think of what will happen come this next Australian summer, but I like the feel of it now. The only complaint I have at the moment is how soft the material is, as it's almost too easy to cut through with even a fairly blunt knife.

Overall, I like Finecast, but no more or less than I liked metal.

I think that this is still new, and eventually they will work the bugs out of the casting process. It may get better with time. If not, we will get used to it in time. Or quit. Those are really the only options.

I have found that they are generally better than the metal models, The only problem I have had are air bubbles in the model but they were easily fixed with green stuff.

I just got a Zoanthrope and a Techmarine with Servys,

with the Zoanthrope, i didnt have any problems, but with the Techmarine, I feel that the Servo-arms flex a little bit to much, and with the way i was able to "snap" them out of the sprues, its a little worrysome for me, but it was a near dream to paint compared to metal,

The extra flash was annoying, but I like finecast in general. The one thing that really irritated me though was the relief writing that says "Archon" or whatever on the bar at the bottom that's supposed to slot into the bases. With that there it didn't fit into the slot and I had to file it down, which to me is just a waste and produces a lot of dust. And I'm wary about the dust because of the mixed information about whether it's dangerous or not.

Just use a craft knife to carefully carve it off.
No dust

If you do have to sand resin, use wet and dry and dip the paper in water which keeps the dust from flying into the air and your lungs

No, that's how you find out how great the quality of the Finecast is. Obviously as they are inferior products, the resin produced by others is toxic.

As I have yet to buy any finecast, I am indifferent to it.

I just got a box of finecast Chaos Raptors today, and I have to say that I am disappointed. The amount of bubbles are flash are horrible. There's a bubble on the top of one of my raptor's head, and I don't have access to green stuff. Also, the talons have huge amounts of resin with them, and it's extremely difficult to cut it out without taking the talons along.

I bought some Striking Scorpions and a Zoanthrope recently, and the scorpions were great, minimal bubbles extra bitz, overall a good kit.
But the Zoey, was awful, a large hole on the upper torso, two of the same arms and none of the other made me call GW customer services to get a replacement. Dissapointed overall.

Did they replace it for you? Manufacturing defects happen in every industry, and they can't be avoided. However, every company (not just GW) should replace a defective product, no questions asked. I'm willing to excuse product defects so long as the company does the right thing to remedy the situation.

I'm not defending games workshop, I'm just saying they should be doing the right thing by replacing any and all defective products that people report.

Exactly, they put that 12+ logo on the box to make sure people know it's not like normal resin and safe for kids to work with. Also I'm sure they would be forced to put warnings if it wasn't.

I am sure the defects will decrease with time.

They really should have throughly tested their casting out before they started selling stuff.

The best way to make sure they improve the quality is to keep sending all the defective models back. if you get a defective one in the mail as a replacement, send it back again. repeat untill you get a good one back.

If GW gets enough repeatitive returns, they will fix the problem with the machines. every returned model is a massive loss in profit for them and if it keeps happening they will have to fix the problem.

Product support is the one area GW does a fabulous job in. if something is defective, they will fix it.
