Who else, like me thinks that Games Workshop's best games were the specialist games, to the point where WHFB and 40K became unplayable for me due to how bad they are...
Its really annoying that nobody gives them a second look, generally cos their either in 6mm/ 10mm scale therefore too small to paint (not), this view not being helped by GW's determination to reduce the ranges to the point where the no longer exist...
I collect the games but beside my dad doubt ill ever find another willing opponent....

Personally, the Specialist Games mean much more to me than 40K or Fantasy - the SG's are the very 'essence' of GW IMO. Like many others, my first taste was through Space Crusade and HeroQuest but my first foray into GW 'proper' was through Space Marine (and later, Titan Legions) and Blood Bowl back in around '91/'92- I only started playing 40K and Fantasy comparatively recently, say around '02, something like that.
It really pains me to see the disdain that GW hold for these lines now, considering the esteem in which they were once held, both by GW and by the community as a whole.

Specialist games don't sell models. 40k and Fantasy do. That is the sole reason those lines pushed to the back of the warehouse.

Just made a deal to buy the Epic 40,000 boxset.
I think I'm going to supplant Warhammer 40k with Epic: Armageddon. I like the scale and the cost much more.

Yes Specialist Games have more appeal, suppose we should consider ourselves lucky that GW simply did not drop them completely.
Why, perhaps because for a lot of them we (the customer) got to make a lot of input into their Living Rules (thanks for the chance Jervis).
Then again, is it now time for GW to hand the license to someone who would actively support those franchises. Perhaps it will the only way we would ever see the full epic range again or a reprint of Man o War (c'mon GW at least give us a PDF of the rules and charts).

Man, imagine if Fantasy Flight got the chance to re-do Epic and Blood Bowl!

I love the epic 40,000 rules, but I hate painting 6MM miniatures, especially troops. If they made a 15MM game that was essentially epic but with a little more flavor, I would be all over it.

totally agree Breotan this is and has always been about $$$, GW drop anything that doesnt make a substantial profit but at the same time hold on tight to their intellectual propoerty so will never release Epic, Blood Bowl etc etc to another games company.
I love Epic 2nd edition and now play a lot of NetEpic. Figures are still around (Ebay and Trademe here in NZ) and most of the older gamers i know still have an army or two floating around. Automatically Appended Next Post: Forgot to mention, 40k (whilst fun when played with good mates) is really a poor imitation of a tactical wargame, Epic beats it hands down everytime.

well my involvement with GW was kind of different, my first encounter was with the PC version of blood bowl, then browsed and discovered the world of miniature wargaming, our local hobby store got a lot of battleforces and we started to play.
the deal, in 40k you need lots of money to make a decent army, that scares new players.
epic offers more accesible costs, and with 20 bucks you have the equivalent to a battleforce in the bigger scale version, to be honest is like a complete army without vehicles or special characters.
i am getting interested not only for the cost, but for the challenge to paint those tiny armies, and maybe do some cool miniscale conversions.
i have told the shop owner to get some epic sets, so new players can get into the fray of 40k, i know they will eventually jump into the regular one.
BTW, i want a epic scale squat army, is that possibe? XD

Epic scale Squats were made, and can still be found on eBay on occasion (I have some). I believe some companies also make proxies (Ironcrown Miniatures or Dark Realm Miniatures, IIRC).

It's a shame they don't at least put some articles in WD so people might be interested.
Epic is a better game than 40k, and warmaster is a better game than fantasy. It is harder to find epic/WM opponents, i'm one of the lucky ones. Most veteran players usually start off with WHFB or 40k, then end sticking to a WM or epic
I think the advantage of 28mm scale is it's more eye catching. Some of the new big models in plastic look great (the skaven machine with the smoke coming out of it)

A quick question for the Epic players.
The Epic 40k box comes with sprues to make city ruins. Any advice on how to make some nice area terrain for E:A?
And while I agree that 28mm is more eye catching in singular models, 15mm and 6mm come into their own when you look at an army as a whole. 6,000 pts of Epic sized steel legion can be quite impressive.

Warpcraft-ever consider getting a commision job - in 6mm it would be quite cheap in comparison to 28mm. Look at me blog if it tickles your fancy.
Infinite - try and build some hight into it, and mabye have some form of Diroama (spelling apolegy) - that seems to be the best looking terrain in 6mm from my experince.

Thanks for the tip, Optio. I can't wait to get playing. I think I'm going to paint my marines as Pre-Heresy Iron Warriors, and try to convert some Old Crow Models 15mm Crow Lander into a couple of Stormbirds to use in place of Thunderhawks.

@ infinite_array - I would recommend S6 Engineering for their small scale stuff - they made a very cost effective road, canal and building system. I use past tense because they have just recently stopped regular production but will be doing small runs from time to time so one to keep an eye out for. Found this out as I was about to place a big order. The great thing about this scale is that you can make your own stuff even if you are not that great at it. Small scale really lends itself to low detail stuff easily made by anyone (the 3' rule and all that). With a sheet of foamcore board, PVA, bag o' sand and some grey paint. You can knock up a reasonable destroyed city in an afternoon. Other than that there are quite a few compaines out there that do 6mm and 10mm stuff. I also have some of the Battlefield in a Box stuff from GF9/ BF. 15mm but still okay and it comes ready painted!

My first GW game was Adeptus Titanticus followed quickly by 1st edition Space Marine. We still play Bloodbowl and Necromunda regularly. I've pretty much played every incarnation of the Space Marine/Titan Legions epic systems with the exception of Epic Armageddon. Even did NetEpic for a while there too.
No need to comment on why the games are back burnered since I think the money angle has been well discussed already.
On the plus side GW does still support the games, and I really like the fact that the rules for them are all free for download now too. Can't complain about that. The minis cost a little more since you *must* by them from GW unless you can find them on ebay, but with the rules free it saves some cash for the mini purchase.

My Epic 40,000 boxset arrived today! So very happy.
I've got 1,000 pts of Marines ready to go, and the Orks are half ready. Just need to find 10 Big Gunz and some more Boyz to fill up another 12 stands.
And, these ruins that came with the box?
Easily the best terrain GW's ever produced. It's detailed, plentiful, and came in the starter box!

E:A is a great game that is support by a great online Community and to top it off I have a decent size gaming group where I live. Last weekend of the month in Epic Day for our group at the Bunker. Sometimes we play BFG or Space Hulk or AI but mainly a full day of Epic Glory. And without fail we always draw crowd especially when field lots of Titans, lol.
