You'd be better off going to a music store and asking for their single string collection. Size depends on what you want to do with it.

Where to buy guitar string? From a store that sells guitars, perhaps? I would imagine any local music store has guitar string of various materials and gauges that you can buy. Typically it is sold as a 6-string set, but some may sell individual strings.

Yeah, I picked up a heap from a music store clearance bin.

I also have a relative who plays guitar, who just puts aside his broken strings for me.

If you need to order online try ebay or a website like Strings Direct who sell single strings.

What size string you need is a whole other matter.

The size string (or gauge) depends on your finger strength. I use fine strings b/c I don't play often. The heavier the string, the better the sound (if I'm not mistaken).

Make sure to order for your type of guitar (acoustic or electric) because it does matter.

I don't know this one, but a friend uses it sometimes:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars?source=3WWRWXGG

personally I get my stuff off of Amazon.com.

But, (and not to be sarcastic in any way) it would be beneficial to go to a shop depending on how experienced you are, so that you can ask questions on what types of strings work for what types of sounds, etc.

Good luck.

Go into a music shop and ask for mediums. In a pack they are sizes .13-.56 but i'm asuming you want the ribs for tubing etc. In that case you need the low E, A and D strings which are .35, .45 and .56 respectivly.

One of each of those should should give you enough variation.

Given that this is the Painting and Modelling forum, I rather suspect that he doesn't actually want it for a guitar...

Maybe to be a bit more helpful, I was in the situation you are in a while ago.
I thought guitar string would make perfect power cables.

So I went to a music store and they were more than happy to unload a bunch of old strings on me.
Then I set about putting them to use.

Short version... don't waste your time unless you are trying to bridge two elements that are far apart and you need the support.
You'd be far better off buying something else like the ones from Dragon Forge and using those.

I did a post on my blog showing my results if you want a more in-depth look.

Hope this helps some.

Do you want this for modelling, or for playing guitar?

Either way, if you're asking I guess that you're looking for something easy to use, potentially as a beginner, so I'd recommend 9 guage strings, these being some of the most beginner friendly strings out there due to their fine core.

So, whether your shredding riffs or shredding mini soldiers in ernie ball branded barb wire, 9 guage is the way to go (note, they may not last longest, or have the most sustain but as insaniak said, I guess this won't matter as you're posting in a P&M forum).

Drop me a PM if you're looking for something to suit your style of music (if you are planning on putting them on a geetar).

Cheers, peace and love

Mine :(

There used to be 2 but they're both gone. Except for the drum shop, but as a bassist (or modeller) it's not that much use for me! Fortunately, from a music POV, bass strings don't snap often (I've snapped 1 string in 20 years, the E!). Unfortunately, from a modelling POV, bass strings don't snap often...

A word of caution from me. I ordered a bunch of guitar strings from eBay really cheap thinking it was an amazing deal. But I'll be damned if I could do anything with them. The core was so tough they ruined my wire clippers. Not a cheap pair either.

I know next to nothing about guitar strings from a musicians standpoint. Lots of jargon floating about on modelling websites about which ones are best :S So I asked a bud of mine if he had any old broken ones lying around and he did. And they were perfect

And, I don't know about anywhere else, but near me a lot of charity shops sell old guitar strings. I even found an old childs guitar for 50p with the right effect string (even if poor quality).

You know you can "order" strings from a guitar shop, right?

Way to piss off someone who was trying to help.

Bits and Kits sells guitar string for modelling. I think Hasslefree might do it as well.

You have missed the point that there is no tone of voice on the internet?

How can you tell that they're patronizing? Do they raise their eyebrows while they type? did they have an untyped "duh!" that we can't see? For that matter, how can I know that you mean it in jest?

What if, you know, they're just TRYING TO HELP? Isn't that possible and you just imagined that it sounded patronizing?

Most guitar strings will be hard on clippers. You have to remember, they are meant for guitar, not for modeling. As a guitarist, you don't want guitar strings that break easily. So you make them hard to break which in turn makes them hard to clip. When I re-string my guitars, I don't use modeling wire clippers. I use larger ones meant for wiring/construction-type purposes. Heavy duty clippers. This is especially true if you want to get into terrain applications where you want to use bass guitar strings, for example.

I used to use guitar strings, but then I bought this;

It is awesome and a lot easier to work with than guitar string.

Personally, I work with guitar strings two different size, and I don't have any problems with the scale.

I dont try the masq mini product but the idea is great, and I think create an home made tool like this product is easier.

As a guitarist I can say that guitar string can be a real b*** to work with. I would suggest using strings with a lower gauge number. Playing in metal bands I often use strings of 56' or above and they can be very tough to cut through. Most guitar strings will be suitable, however, a set of ernie ball super slinkys will give you very thick to very light, for variation.

If you are wanting it to make tubing texture, you might also look at copper wire. I just garbage pick a length of wire from a discarded appliance and strip the plastic off. The wound copper kind can be unwound, then wound around a length of whatever in order to make a spiral texture. It's pliable, not liable to break just from regular handling (especiallly if supported by something underneath it, such as a paper clip) and very easy to cut. (Clippers would be fine)

A couple of things to remember when using guitar or bass strings... first, you need HEAVY DUTY clippers. Strings are tough and they can and will damage all but the toughest clippers.

Second, strings will only retain their shape (straight) unless you bend them at an extreme angle. The more bend you want it to have, the further you have to bend it to have it keep the desired shape.

Third, the shorter it is, the more tension it will take to bend it. Keep these things in mind and you will have better experiences with it. I highly recommend Musicians friend for strings or instruments.
