When I joined up on Dakka, I tried to pick out a cool username and couldn't really come up with anything. So I just ended up using "Manchu." But over the years, I've noticed some of you Dakkanauts have undeniably awesome usernames. So I thought I'd give you my top five and ask you guys which usernames you guys think are cool. Feel free to tout your own name; arrogant bastards are welcome, too, as long as their usernames are cool! This is the OT, after all.

Number Five: Kanluwen

First off, it's unique. Is it meaningless? Does it mean something in a language I don't know but can kind of recognize? The trick is that you can't tell -- it's evocative. This is the same trick that George Lucas used on every generation since 1977 with the name "Obi-wan Kenobi." Something about that name, which as far as I know is nonsense, has the air of a samurai general or a zen master -- or, in the case of Obi-wan Kenobi himself, pretty much both rolled up into one. "Kanluwen" has similar connotative value to me: it makes me think of Mortal Combat (Liu Kang) and so has the requisite implication of asskickery, but the "wen" part kind of evens it out and puts me back in mind of zen. One day, I will run a session of the Star Wars Saga Edition campaign and name a Jedi NPC "Master Kanluwen.":

Number Four: Dances with Squats

"I don't want to trivialize the tragic history of Native Americans, but GW royally screwed the Squats." That's the sort of line I can imagine Steve Carell delivering if it ever turned out that he was into Warhammer 40k. (In fact, now that I think of it, this user is most likely actually Steve Carell trying to hide his true identity behind a Union Jack.) This poster is either not active anymore or doesn't post very often at all. But whenever I come across this name, no matter how many times I see it, it always always always makes me laugh. You've got to admire that kind of staying power -- and that, in and of itself, is a real tribute to the poor Squats themselves. Despite their ridiculous name and harsh treatment at the hands of Nottingham, those tough little space beardies remain in our hearts even to this day . . . even if they're really mostly a joke even to this day. If you ever find yourself taking the GrimDark a bit too seriously . . .

Number Three: Cannerus_The_Unbearable

It goes without saying that this is the perfect name for a Chaos Lord. The real question is: dedicated to which of the Ruinous Powers? For those who know the poster, the answer is obviously Slaanesh but I'd argue the name could stand on its own as a Nurgle-worshiper's sobriquet: their putrescent hides and disease-ridden bowels certainly make them unbearable enough. Let me be honest with you guys: I've actually thought about this for a while now. The best answer I've come up with is that the character must indeed be a Slaaneshi devotee, gifted by that archfiend with blindingly good looks, making him "unbearable" like how the sun is too bright to look at, but also immense cruelty and sadism, making him utterly unbearable as a personality. A username that I overthink to that degree must be awesome.

Number Two: Morathi's Darkest Sin

Even if you don't know who Morathi is, this username will still sound pretty badass to you. Of course, if you do know who Morathi is then the impact is even greater. I've always wondered if the implication is supposed to be that the poster himself is the result of whatever most terrible sin Morathi committed or if the name is just supposed to come out of nowhere and seduce your imagination. It's certainly not a conventional username, especially with the leading possessive, and that right there is enough to get your attention. This is a username that could inspire a good short story -- how many of us can really say the same about our own handles? Honestly, if it was Morathi's worst moral transgression it must have been pretty frikkin bad indeed. For a long, long time I thought I'd never see a more original and evocative username.

That is, until I saw . . . well, let's give it a little more time.

Stay tuned for the Number One slot!

Don't mean to be a tease but I want to really invest some time into explaining why my all-time favorite username is truly the best I've ever seen. In the meantime, what are some cool usernames you guys have come across on Dakka? Do you have a top five or even a top ten? Does anyone's username give you ideas for creating wargame-themed fiction/background ideas?

I'm not going to lie

This is rather amusing.

Gwar! Was always one that amused me to see and was in fact the first poster I saw on this sight when I looked it up.

Ooh, cool thread idea I think the best names are two words that sound really dull separately, but when kitbashed together have a nice sound to them.

My top five would be...

reds8n
Lunahound
Kid_Kyoto
Phototoxin
smurfwedge

I'm quite pleased I got Flashman (it's the first forum ever where nobody had it already), but you have to respect those who think up their own.

I tend not to divulge it in freindly places like this as it's often taken as a religious offence, when it is not meant as such. It's actually a quote from the comic Transmetropolitan all smashed into one word. I save the unexpurgated version for more personal environments. For example, it's my Steam username, where I'm unlikely to expose it to sensitive strangers.

I like Chowderhead. It has a very special meaning for me. It's both a nickname, an insult, and a hidden meaning inside it.

My friends across the pond call me "Chowderhead", as I come from a land known for it's chowder. This is also an insult, as in "Your head is full of chowder!".

Chowderhead is a hidden meaning, as well. I am a chowder addict, and people notice that my head is... Large, shall we say?

Oh, and my favorite name is probably ChiliPowderKeg, because it makes no sense.

Would find. If I had ever been in that scenario. Aheheh.
