In my cave, lying down and waiting for you...

Since there has been an similar thread at warhammer fantasy battle forum then I might just ask the same about wh40k. So which Wh40k special characters are most worth their price in your opinion?
My thoughts:
Captain cato sicarius
Darnath lysander
Eldrad Ulthuan

If by most playable you mean most worth their points, then the answer in my opinion is most of them. If you mean 'easiest to use' then I vote for Tigurius. He's versatile enough to be a useful support character in any situation.

Lysander manages to buff a squad he's with while being a one man wrecking ball; he's pretty hard to use poorly as long as he's hitting stuff with his hammer or making your bolters reroll misses.

Eldrad Ulthuan. BEAST! 3 pyshic powers a turn and not for too bad points either.

Otherwise: Sammael!

Jetbike with plasma cannon and a bunch of other special rules which I can't remember right now. Either way a great IC

Eldrad and Fateweaver both come to mind.

I also find Marbo can be quite worth the mere 65 points it takes to field him, if he can show up at the right time and detonate a squad of termies/long fangs/oblits/etc.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only rules disputes.

Eldrad hands down. No special character can do more for his force than Eldrad. His stat line is not overally impressive but he makes Eldar competitive.

Mephy on the other hand has the stat line of a monstrous creature.

Hmm... Vulkan is probably the single most cost effective special character in the game.

Eldrad and Fateweaver would also be good candidates.

Crowe and Lysander are both great for their points, although for different reasons, and not to the same level as the others mentioned IMO.

Oh, and of course Ghazzy has to be up there as well.

Vulkan, hands down. Honoroable Mention, Pedro Cantor.

Eldrad, Logan, and Mephiston might be more powerful (open to debate) but you pay for that power. Vulkan and Pedro can immediately improve any army they are added to, at a very reasonable cost.

Actually Marbo IS the most point efficent for 65 points you can effectively cripple termies, paladins and outright destroy your average marines, tyranid warriors... Oh god I should run him more in my IG army...

Surprised no one's mentioned Duke Sliscus yet.
150 points for getting better Combat Drugs, free Retrofire Jets for everyone and 3+ poison on a unit of Splinter weapons, and still being relatively nasty in combat.
Literally the only reason I don't take him is I value FnP a bit more.

Vulkan boosts the best anti-tank weapons in the game (meltas), the best assault unit in the game (assault termies), and a very common support weapon (heavy flamers). He does this for essentially zero points over a similarly equipt captain. He also doesn't need to be on the board or stay alive for his main benefits, and the competition for SM HQ slots isn't fierce.

Eldrad does a lot, although his usefulness is waning with increasing numbers of psyker defenses.

Ghazkull is great, and gives the army a very reliable turn two charge. He's not a bargain though, and competes with the stupidly good Big Mek for an HQ slot.

Which is why you run both a Big Mek and him! Sure, it's kinda expensive, but what Mr. G touches dies.

CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!

Only 90 pts and can really help an IG army become much more effective. Although does work better if used with Kell and possibly foot Guard.

Otherwise, has to be Eldrad.

Marbo is awesome.

I run counts-as Kantor, so he gets a vote.

I want Lysander... Gotta get assault termies first though.

The Changling! 20~something point named character? Win!

But if you meant like HQ's, and staying with deamons, fateweaver is pretty much a staple along with epidimus if you go nurgly. Ku'gath is awesoem too since nothing can possibly kill him.

I cant remember who they are but a lot of the DE guys allow you to get some stupidly good bonuses to their squads. Or at least let you manage to use some rule combos to create awesome.

Grunt: Wait, but those are ladies, we cant hurt ladies.
Sarge: Those arent ladies, they're Deamonettes. They will tear you limb from limb and eat your soul.
