Subject: Space Wolves 1750pts Tournament list in need of some feedback
|

Automated Space Wolves Thrall
|
First time poster, long time lurker. So, hi everybody.
I have a tournament coming and I want your advise on my list.
So, here is my list:
HQ
Rune Priest (100pts)
Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane, Power Armour, Runic Weapon
Elites
Lone Wolf (95pts)
Fenrisian Wolf, Storm Shield, Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer
Wolf Guard Pack (235pts)
5 Wolf Guard
3 w/ Combi Melta, Power fist, 1 w/ combi Plasma, Power Fist
1 w/ Cyclone, Power Weapon, Storm Bolter, Terminator Armour
Wolf Scouts (85pts)
5x Wolf Scout
Meltagun
Troops
2x Grey Hunters Pack (170pts)
7x Grey Hunter, Mark of the Wulfen, Meltagun, Wolf Standard + Rhino
Grey Hunters Pack (175pts)
7x Grey Hunter, Mark of the Wulfen, Plasma Gun, Wolf Standard + Rhino
Grey Hunters Pack (120pts)
5x Grey Hunter, Meltagun + Razorback w/ Twin-linked Heavy Bolter
Fast Attack
2x Land Speeder (100pts)
Multi-melta, Typhoon Missile Launcher
Heavy Support
2x Long Fangs Pack (140pts)
6x Long Fang, 5 Missiles
Predator (120pts)
Autocannon, Lascannons
Total: 1750
Instead of the Lone Wolf and the lascannons on Predator, I could take Rifleman Dreadnought.
Or lose the LW, Predator and the cyclone terminator and take a Wolf Lord w/ Thunderwolf, TH, SS, Beastslayer and 5 Fenrisian Wolves to go with him.
What do you think is the best choice? Or is the whole list full of fail?
And no, I will not take more Razorbacks. Because, I don't have more.

Sure Space Wolves Land Raider Pilot
|
I'll start from the top
Rune Priest (100pts)
Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane, Power Armour, Runic Weapon
Your HQ Choice is fine, fairly standard in competitive games, some people like to take jaws of the world wolf in place of living lightning or murderous hurricane but this all depends on game type
Lone Wolf (95pts)
Fenrisian Wolf, Storm Shield, Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer
Wolf Guard Pack (235pts)
5 Wolf Guard
3 w/ Combi Melta, Power fist, 1 w/ combi Plasma, Power Fist
1 w/ Cyclone, Power Weapon, Storm Bolter, Terminator Armour
Wolf Scouts (85pts)
5x Wolf Scout
Meltagun
I'm guessing your attaching each wolf guard to a Grey Hunter Squad and the one with the cyclone to the lone wolves? thats a good choice, the cyclone gives you 2 extra rocket shots a turn which only helps break enemy tanks, the lone wolf is actually one of my favorite Elite choices, i usually run him with 2 fenrisian wolves, a Chain fist and a storm shield. The wolves will help absorb wounds and the chain fist will help take down tanks. remember, you want to get him killed. I dont personally use wolf scouts but a lot of people seem to be so i guess i should check them out.
2x Grey Hunters Pack (170pts)
7x Grey Hunter, Mark of the Wulfen, Meltagun, Wolf Standard + Rhino
Grey Hunters Pack (175pts)
7x Grey Hunter, Mark of the Wulfen, Plasma Gun, Wolf Standard + Rhino
Grey Hunters Pack (120pts)
5x Grey Hunter, Meltagun + Razorback w/ Twin-linked Heavy Bolter
I'd Drop the plasma in the 3rd squad for the fact that you have a 1/6 chance of killing yourself, not worth it in my opinion, your better off taking another meltagun. The razorback in a list like this isnt going to work to well in my opinion, i'd say drop that squad and something else and take another grey hunter squad in a rhino, and throw some upgrades on the 4th wolf guard. But if you feel that you must run a razor back switch the heavy bolter to a twin linked las, or a las with TL Plasma.
2x Land Speeder (100pts)
Multi-melta, Typhoon Missile Launcher
These are fine, the only thing i can think of is to take another multimelta instead of the typhoon
2x Long Fangs Pack (140pts)
6x Long Fang, 5 Missiles
Predator (120pts)
Autocannon, Lascannons
The long Fangs are fine. for the predator i actually prefer the dakka pred with heavy bolters on the sides, its cheaper and its more helpful since your shooting 2 str 7 and 6 str 5 shots a turn, if math serves your killing at least 4 enemy models a turn (math might be terrible there) it also helps clear up 20 points
sorry for the long post, hope this helps

To clear things out, one of the combimelta/fist Wolf Guard goes with the Scouts and the rest goes with the Grey Hunters. The one with the plasma goes, of course, with the plasma squad.
And speaking of the plasma squad, I have found out that this list doesnt need another melta as much it needs some Ap2 shots. And fighting Avatar regulary may have something to do with it.
The cyclone terminator joins one of the Long Fang squad or goes by himself. I wish he could join the LW.
The reason behind the Razorback squad is holding my own objective. And for that you only need to be scoring unit. And cheap. And for 5 points I can get twin linked h.bolter for them, so why not.
Im with you on the lascannons on Predator. Not too fond about it. And it actually cost 35 points more than the h.bolters.

Ditch the Lone Wolf or add a second one to the list (in place of the Wolf Scouts) and give both of them 2x Fenrisian Wolves. They work best in pairs much like Dreadnoughts and Land Speeders. Also, drop the Cyclone Terminator. It's too damned many points for a pair of missile shots on a 1 wound model. You would be better off spending the points on Razorbacks for the Long Fangs, who need some kind of ride in case you roll Dawn of War.
Don't add a Rifleman Dread unless you can add a pair of them. Single Dreadnoughts get blown up by stray missiles most of the time, but a pair requires an actual investment of resources for your opponent to deal with. It's primarily a psychological thing, but I've seen it hold true many many times. Another option for the same points would be a pair of PC/HF Dreadnoughts, which fill the same role as the Lone Wolves but with some added ranged potential and durability against units that lack Power Fists.
Other than the odd single items, it's a pretty solid list, so thee isn't a whole lot that needs adjustment.

The Lone Wolf dones not need Terminator Armor, I keeps him from making Sweeping Advances, This is how I make most of my kills with them. Remeber you will never loose a Assualt with them, they will either Die [Win for You] or you will scoe more Wounds thus wining the Close Combat [Win]
As for the Plasma Gun, don't Fear it, I run 3x full 10 man Packs with two and generaly loos 1-3 a game, but I usaly kill 10-20 Models a Game. To me that is worth the risk.
The Scouts look..ok, I would sugest adding a MoTW to carry the Melta Gun.

Actually that's a pretty good point regarding the Lone Wolf, but I'd also like to point out that there are several builds for Lone Wolves that are quite useful, but for different situations. What you have now is for hunting MC's, Dreadnoughts and Tanks, and will hold up in combat against most heavy hitters, but is inefficient against infantry.
What Anpu42 suggests is a more cheap and cheerful anti-infantry build and usually features Mark of the Wulfen and a pair of Fenrisian Wolves to see that he makes it into combat. That build will overwhelm infantry with rending attacks and will either win combat by sheer force or will die in the process, hopefully taking some enemy models with him.

I usaly run a Pair, Muzzle and Blitz
>Power Armor
>Close Combat Weapon
>Storm Shield
>MotW
If I got the Points
>Add 2 Wolves
>Melta Bombs
These usaly kill between 1-3 Suqads a Game each before takn down.
I have had bad luck with Vehicles with them, so I genraly keep clear of them.

You cannot use the Meltabombs. A model with Mark of the Wulfen cannot use any other weapons but his claws and teeth, so you have to rely on Rending to get the job done. The Storm Shields are a nice touch though.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to test a few lists now.
I usually pair my Rifleman with my Predator to keep them alive. The Dread can hide behind the Pred for a cover save or cover the Preds weaker side armour.
I have used the LW only a few times before so your advises are really helpfull.
The Scouts are one of my favorite units in the fluff and my collection, so they are really hard to let go. I usually give them MotW, but I had to get the points for something else.
Any ideas on what to take instead of the cyclone? Dont have a third Speeder, so thats out. Or more Razors.
What about the Thunderlord? Worth the points? Or find some more for the Bear?

A Thunderwolf Lord is definitely worth the points. The problem is you also need a set of Thunderwolves to escort him. Without that he is too vulnerable since he cannot join any other units. I have lists from 1,000 points to 2,000 points that use a Thunderwolf Lord and a unit of Thunderwolves, but they look quite a bit different from yours. Playing with Thunderwolves does require a bit of practice and I usually build my lists a bit differently to support them.
