As a person living in a sovereign nation, when someone asks you what you are/where do you come from, do you say your of that nationality, or do you say your a person from your state/province/city/region?



(i.e. American, Egyptian, Vietnamese for nation, New Yorker, Wales, Taiwanese for region).

If I'm asked, I usually say American. But the reality is that my identity is more internationalist than specifically American. I have more in common with my French, Indian, etc. friends than I do with the majority of Americans I meet. This is probably because I've live abroad a number of times, and travel frequently. Also, my undergraduate school was extremely international.

I identify myself as an American.

English my self, if asked where in England I tend to say the south coast, if asked where on the south coast I say Portsmouth-ish...sort of.
By the way Wales is a country not a region

Im from Yorkshire, I dislike everyone else, especially the rest of the British Isles.

If an American asks me, I'm North Dakotan.

If anyone else asks me, I'm American.

Ah yes, the noth of England hates the southen half, Scottland hates England, Wales dislikes every one, but when them folks over the channel get upperty we all band to gether to hate them collectively. British history for the last 2000 years

Depends on if I'm taking to another US Citizen or a knowledgeable non-resident, or if I'm taking to someone who is ignorant enough to call a southerner a yank to their face and not expect to be punched.

I usually answer Australian because I put my citizenship in Australia in front of American Citizenship.

I identify with my Nationality that is the Land of Oz.

I was born in Sweden, moved to the United States when I was 2, so I am Swedish.

I think of the U.S. as a really long vacation that lost all of its pizazz ~12 years ago.

I was born in the US, and I was born in texas, and I was born in what used to be Mexico, and before that, used to be Native American, though I'm not sure which tribe(s). Should I use my Hispanic heritage, or my Texan one, or use only my US citizenship? I wouldn't claim to be of Native American descent, but what about the ones who can?

I lived in my country of birth for about 6 months, and it has significantly different cultural norms to my own so I do not identify with it at all.

I'd identify myself as Welsh, even though I never lived there. Father is from Porth in the Rhondda, and I only knew that side of my family growing up. Mother is from Newbury in England.

Obviously been to Wales a number of times, and I do have a long term goal to live somewhere in either Carmarthenshire, Gwynedd or Ceredigon before I'm fifty. So fourteen odd years to sort that out.

Probably helps that I have a Welsh first, middle and surname mind. Hard to ignore the heritage when you write it on every application or form you ever fill in.

And as to the OP... technically yes...

If I'm in another country, I say I'm from the U.S. Simply for the fact that most people I've met from other countries don't know where Maine is.

I won't give out my full name, but my middle name is Gawain, to give a idea.

Our Sons have welsh middle names, oddly I seem to have given them both non British first names for some odd reason, but I like them.

I reluctantly identify myself as English, reluctantly because so many of my countrymen have turned being so into a negative... mostly though i'm just a human, much the same as all the others!

I identify myself as a Fitzz...but if asked for a list of ingredients , then...German,French, Native American ,New Orleans born coonass...
