I know, I know, questions about casting figures are quite frequent and end up locked due to debates...... But I really need to know, if I were to make some true scale marines, would I be allowed to cast the parts I converted them into? As in the legs or arms after they have been converted? And I'm really sorry if I'm not allowed to ask! Won't happen again! Thanks in advance!

P.S. If I was allowed to, would I then still be allowed to post pictures of them here on Dakka?

The "standard" 28mm Space Marine is not truly in scale given the size of the Imperial Guard figures and the stated size and dimensions of Space Marines (remember they are super human).

So we either shrink all other figures (Unlikely), expand the size of Space Marines to be more realistic (huh) I mean "True Scale" or we do nothing and accept it. There has been a general upsizing of Marines over the last few decades, early 1990's Terminators are much smaller than modern terminators. There is a second term used, called "Heroic Scale" this is the general principle of scaling something to look better on the tabletop than producing a true scale product, so heroic scale means more poetic license to make better looking or more imposing figures.

Anyway Back on topic...

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

OP, please don't write in that hard to read dark green text - I shouldn't have to highlight what you wrote just to read it!

If they're bits you made yourself, then recast with impunity. If they're bits that are modified GW bits (as I'm assuming) you can as long as
A. You don't sell them, and keep them for personal use.
B. Be hush hush about it.

For the last time, PERSONAL USE RECASTING IS VERY MUCH ILLEGAL.

Now then, to the real question: It depends greatly on how heavily modified the pieces are. If let's say you took a GW leg and only used it as a base, sculpting over almost the entire piece in order to make it bigger for true scale, odds are you'd be fine.

Now, if you were to cast them AND they were illegal, just don't play or photograph the recasts in bare condition. Prime them and all is well as no one will be able to tell they are recasts.

People need to stop telling others that personal casting is legal.

IT IS ONLY LEGAL TO RECAST ITEMS THAT YOU OWN THE COPYRIGHT TO(in other words items that you yourself created).

You're not gonna go to prison over it, so don't worry about it. I don't get why people get their back up over this.

I've got loads of re-cast items, it's not that big a deal.

The question about Space Marines is how much of a copyright GW own in the overall Space Marine design and its individual parts.

For an obvious example, no-one would accept that because SMs have two arms, two legs and a head, it prevents you from making a figure with two arms, two legs and a head.

If you make some small but meaningful changes to the GW concept, you could achieve a copyright free design of your own which you can cast as much as you like and even sell.

IANAL, however the bits that look most characteristic and original to my eyes are the backpack and the eagle on the chest plate.

Change those and the rest of the armour is pretty much just armour.

The idea behind "True Scale" is that SMs are supposed to be about nine to ten feet tall, but the models look about the same height as Cadians.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Just here for the holidays! So if I understand correctly, all I need to do is change them enough so that I don't infringe or something on GW's copyright, right Kilkrazy?
