I can't be doing with 3D. I'd maybe switch it on now and then for novelty value, but by and large I value battery life and not having to lock my face in a certain position in front of the screen more than this.
That said my DS is dying and needs replacing. Was planning on picking up a DSi XL as the stock runs down and gets put on clearance, but in light of the link I'm now pondering if want...

The 3DS is a major disappointment, IMHO. It seemed like a really great idea, and I was pretty excited when I first heard about it.
But, it appears we aren't quite there in the technology. It's got great novelty factor, but isn't all that useful as a video game device.

I disagee, I like the 3ds, I wish they'd hurry up and update soon, but, I love it all the same. The games are awesome, and the circle pad is cool too.

Are you fed up with your DS?
If not, I wouldn't bother. Everyone I know who got a 3DS was disappointed with it. I was going to get one myself but I have half a dozen games to complete on my DS Lite.
I should mention I work for Sony. This message isn't an attempt at damaging the 3DS.
As said above the 3D is more of a gimmick than anything, unfortunately.

Great. The screen is fantastic, really bright and clear, with good contrast and colours.
Some of the first run of games are easy ports from PS2/3, with new features tacked on to justify the new hardware. (Gimmicks, basically.)
Others are very original in the way they use the touch pads, and really use it in the gameplay.

I hate the 3DS, and I've been a devout Nintendo fanboy up until it came out.
Pros- TLOZOOT was redone, and I've heard it isn't horrible. However, I played that game when it came out, and I have fond memories of being four years old discovering the wonders of zelda, so I doubt I'd get much joy out of it.
-Super metroid as downloadable content, I think. Look at my name. Do you think that appeals to me?
- Joystick
Cons- Ugly as butt. Everything about it is ugly, IMO. those buttons at the bottom of the screen? wtf? Those obtrusive and obsene cameras on the back? The shiny, cheap transformer-like plastic?
-Feels delicate and dainty. The DS lite (and DSi) feel very solid, something nintendo has done a good job of in the past.
- Three hundred dollars (as much as a PS3)
- Poor 3D. We're still not totally there on the commercial market. 3D TVs aren't doing very well for obvious reasons, and the 3DS is no exception. 3D is a gimmick.
You couldn't pay me to buy one. I'll wait until they make a 'lite' version. One that isn't so ugly.

Not fed up with my DS, but it's dying. The hinge got damaged and it's not portable any more. A portable DS, with a decent screen, will be cool. Plus will be able to LAN with housemate on Civilization Revolution and Starfox

Battery life and lack of games are the only moot points to the 3DS. The negative points mentioned in this thread can be associated with personal preference and thus must be taken with a grain of salt.
I’m personally waiting for an enhanced version to come out although I might pick up one sooner for Sonic Generations.

The 3DS is almost just like the Wii. There's like 4 games worth mentioning that are actually good, and the rest lump into 2 categories:
1. Games that completely focus on the gimmick of the system and ignore everything else, like being interesting (ex. Every 'motion focussed' Wii game outside of Wii Sports and the like)
2. Games that shouldn't be on there because they make no attempt to even utilize the gimmick of the system (ex. CoD Black Ops on the Wii. A seventh-generation game playing on a system that barely exceeds the power of a 6th generation system. And you could use the Wii Remote, and not hit gak, or a controller.)

Mr Self Destruct has missed the mark with his post, specifically the idea that because a console is capable of a certain feature (3D, motion control etc) it must be defined by that feature. Does that mean every PS3 game that does not use the sixaxis motion control does not belong on the PS3?
Every console usually has a suite of features and capabilities. The fact that the PS3’s blue ray and the 3DS’s 3D are usually key advertising points, it doesn’t necessarily mean that these features solely defined the console. Ergo there’s more to the 3DS than just 3D (such as virtual console support for past gen titles).

The 3DS with either be the failure of this generation that will drive Nintendo to rethink what its role in the market is going to be, or it will eventually rebound and prove what it is truly capable of with the new titles coming out in the next six months.
As it is, it is still too early to tell if it is worth it; the price reduction makes it affordable, but what games are there really to play with it?

A console's games shouldn't be defined by the peripheral features of the system, but the Wii falls victim to this at every turn. Instead of actually focusing on making quality games that utilize the system's features in an engaging way, the majority of developers try to cash in solely on the motion control gimmick (or just make crappy ports that really shouldn't exist). The 3DS sort of suffers the same fate (though it is the most powerful handheld around, at least until the Vita comes out).

The Wii is a bad comparison to make here as the Wii is in an entirely separate category itself as far as console gaming is considered. It’s also early days to say whether devs have missed their mark as far as game design is considered as launch titles for any console usually suck. Considering the success of the previous DS consoles as well as the announced price drop, I don’t see it performing negatively as far as sales is considered. I also don’t see the 3D affecting the 3DS negatively is any sort of “gimmicky” fashion. The 3D is just an optional visual feature that can be switched off. The 3DS is still basically a DSI with beefier specks. Automatically Appended Next Post: I just read more into the price drop. It looks like if you jump into the DS store before Aug 12th you get 10 free Nes and 10 free GBA games. It's interesting that Metroid Fusion is on the list. NES games -Super Mario Bros. -Donkey Kong Jr. -Balloon Fight -Ice Climber -The Legend of Zelda GBA games -Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 -Mario Kart: Super Circuit -Metroid Fusion -WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$ -Mario vs. Donkey Kong

This isn't 4chan, and if you want to recreate 4chan at least do it right and make it green.
