I am going to be taking my Vampire Counts to a 3000pt tournament and I am wondering what are the nasty tricks that I need to look out for when fighting armies that are allowed 4 of the same rare unit. I normally run a deathstar grave guard unit with ghouls for support, a black coach, varghulf x 2, a lvl 4 caster vamp in a skelly bunker and 3 necros with various magic items.
Thanks in advance.

4 hydras can be a pain in the neck in that point level.
Also, a daemon player could possibly fit in 21 flamers in their list. Bad news for the everyone if that happens.
The only other possibly crazy thing someone could do is max out on salamanders, but I dont thing your list would have too much trouble with that.

A common WoC trick is a big unit of Chosen with MoT, wailing banner (terror) and champion with favour of the gods. This will very likely give them a 3+ ward save. Not a rare choice perhaps, but they are also likely to be supported by warshrines, which are rare, to get even more bonuses.

You don't need a Grand Army to run a Chosenstar, points are the only issue. At 3000pts you mostly should be worried about armies which have plenty of good special/rare choices. You can see lists with 6 Cannons and 6 Mortars, or 4 Warp Lightning Cannons and 4 Plagueclaws which tend to be more of a concern than other lists which are just 2500pt lists with some extra stuff.

The main thing i dont like at 3k is Empire war machine spam so many cannons mortars etc.
HPA spam also very sad.
Hydra spam.
I like 2999 just for the sake of no grand army cheese spam but still enough points to have fun.

When are you running it?
If the rumors are true that you can take wraiths as characters (60 points) or banshees (75-85 points), I'd take 4-6 of those heroes.
A single wraith will stop a hydra for the whole game.
A banshee will stop, and likely kill a hydra.
I've had more luck with, and more trouble against multiple corpse carts than a coach. -2 or -3 to cast really adds up.

In grand armys cannons are even scarier as there are just more of them. Also the idea of four Stanks makes me smile.

Yeah, I'm thinking banshee spamming is a better and better idea. Nothing makes me smile like tying up a steam tank with an ~80 point ethereal hero.

Doesn't the White Dwarf entry say that you can only have 0-1 of these per army? Or am I reading this wrong?

You're allowed to have more multiples of Special and Rare choices at games of 3k points or more.

Bear in mind that High Elves can have up to 12 of each Special choice and 8 of each Rare choice in a Grand Arrmy.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I hate hard counters. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, I hate playing any of the factions because no matter what you choose you might as well not deploy against your hard counter. I want to use a gun. Rock, paper, and scissors could all probably still beat gun, but gun will never feel like a game is a lost cause. |

I'd bet on 8 eagles before anything else gets maxed out.
Eagles are awesome for the cost.
