Sometimes we play much of warhammer but we havent noticed big things/rules etc.
Now Im coming up with a new fast question here.
Can I make a 3-wide rank? If I do I assume I cant take the +Combat Resolution for extra ranks since im not at least at 5+ right?
Thanks!

As you said no ranks for combat res.
Question tho why would you want to do that?

I've done it to great effect.
3 wide white lions with full command is still stubborn, and puts the wizard in the 2nd rank, safe from melee. If you park this unit between 2 other blocks, 1" on each side, you've got less than 5" of space, and enemy units 5" wide can't even charge you.

Yeah, I totally thought I was safe from the 2 huge units of rat ogres.
And I was.
It was the 13th spells that was the problem. A unit of 11+arch mage turned into 12 Clan Rats, who happened to be parked on my flanks in the center of my battle line.
DAMN YOU POWER DICE!
That said, I'll be doing the exact same thing next time with black guard, of course, Only 2 wide with black guard though, (musician and standard up front).

Oh brilliant idea with the high elf. Go for some more tactics on this with the blackguard mate? Why 2 wide? You are thinking putting a supreme sorceress inside those on second rank as well right?

Yeah, the standard and musician would go up front, so you couldn't hit the sorceress in melee. Also, being 2 bases wide, anything larger than 90mm could not charge them, as they would not fit.
Since I have 20 black guard (2 full commands), I can run 2 units of 10, spaced between my fighting blocks and keep my wizards fairly safe.

Bring some shooting. It's not like you can't clear out 10 T3 models...
Or take magic missiles.
Or Chariots.
Or Monsters.
The only reason it works, is because people are always taking dwellers, mindrazor and the lore of light. Show up with fire or heavens, and it's a whole different story.
It's also not all that different than putting your wizard alone on foot, sandwiched between 2 large blocks.

I have noticed you often say you wouldn't play people for doing X tactic. I am beginning to wonder if you actually get games at all.
What you call beardy, I think most people would call "being good at the game."

I do okay. 40k prevents more of my games than beardy tactics from my opponents (since I don't play 40K and most of the other people at the FLGS do).

You can make 1 rank units if you really want to. It works best with the dwarven conga line.

You mean the Lordpedo, a minimum unit of hammerers deployed 2-wide behind a Dwarf Lord with Shieldbearers?

Oddly enough, when the Dark Elf Lord on dragon rides in, and they both breathe, the 4D6 S4 hits tends to thin down that back rank quite quickly. Thunder stomp tends to finish off what's left.

Breath weapon, yes, but the thunderstomp is going to end up in the challenge instead (assuming the Dwarf Lord challenges).

Nope, the conga line of slayer heroes. Sure to stop stupid deathstar Chosen lists. Only able to kill one unbreakable hero a turn.

Isn't the danger that you squish the Chosen champ first turn, thereby ruining the challenge option? Though I guess the points differential probably makes the difference not worth it.

Slayers can buy multiple unit champs. Wounds to a champ don't carry over to other models. So you don't need to challenge. At most, 1 champ dies per turn from normal combat.
For 130 points, you could get 5 slayer champs, and line up single file. That's 5 rounds of stalling. More than enough time to flank with something brutal, or simply avoid.

Assuming you had a hero or something with a different initiative than the rest of the unit, you could possibly get through more thanks to Step Up though, correct?
Not that I'm too worried about facing this situation, but I like to be 100% clear.

I'll be damned, I didn't realize wounds could be allocated to a champ but then wouldn't affect the rest of the unit. Good to know!

Yes excess unit wounds carry over to the champ but not the other way around.

In this case, wounds aren't allocated to him. The attacks are allocated to him, because he's the only model the enemy is touching.
Shooting attacks would force you to distribute between the champ(s) and each model in the unit (if the unit numbered less than 5).
Cannons, stone throwers and what not would just hit the models touched (barring any "Look out" rolls).
