Starting up a small Necron Army. I was wondering at what point level should you start fielding the Monolith.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

They are hands down the toughest thing to destroy in the game. I would say you could get away with using them at 1000pts. Some may say less which is perfectly fine too like 750. But any lower and you likely won't want to even play necrons as their codex is not strong in low pts.

Exactly. But remember, to have any even remotely functioning necron army on whatever wing you decide to play, you NEED monoliths, at higher point games expect to be taking 2 or 3 but at just 1,000 you might be able to get away with just one, usually i refuse to play anything under 1750

I wouldn't spend to much on Necrons until we hear more about their new codex.

There have been some good rumour threads about what they'll be getting (here's one) Just remember that no matter how good the source they can change up until the release.

I would seriously just save your money until the new codex hits. 3 months tops. By then, you'll have a nice bank roll as well as a better idea on what you should purchase. The points cost of a monolith (as well as its special abilities) will more than likely go through DRASTIC changes.

Well, my store is starting an Escalation League, and they are giving 25% discount on all purchases for this. I figured I could get a few core units (Lord, Warriors) on the cheap. In Sept I will have to buy 500pts, but I wont make another purchase until at least November.

Edit: I was just going to get the Battle Force and a Lord to start with. Keeping it simple.

The Monolith is nasty. As soon as your about to reach 1000 points get it. It is extremely hard to destroy. I absolutely struggle to destroy them with my Chaos an Orks. My Tau, its a little bit easier lol.

I agree - about 1000 pts level is where the first monolith must be taken:

200 Lord (100 base, destroyer body, orb, shifter)
360 Warriors (2x10)
235 Monolith (1x)
200 Destroyers (x4)
-----
995 pts

Then start adding more destroyers and possibly buy a second monolith after 1500 pts. Definitely 2 at about 1800.

In my experience, the best build is maxed out destroyer wing with two monoliths at 1850.

I do not believe the new codex will wimp out the monolith - way too many people have them and they are iconic units just like the lord. Also, they are very expensive money-wise (65 dollars for one?), and GW wants to make money. Wimping them means people will not buy them. GW are not that stupid.

Depends. If you are going to play Destroyer heavy, it is probably after you get your 9th or 10th Destroyer on the field. If you want to play Wraiths, it is either after the 6th or the 9th Wraith. If you are playing constructs, don't bother, and if you are playing Monoliths you take them as soon as possible.

Sadly, Necrons are heavily into spamming a good unit over and over due to WBB mechanics, and be prepared to lose terribly until you get out of the 500 point range. I can't see a Lord and 20 Warriors (460 points) accomplishing anything much.

Or again wait for the new codex and enjoy the new vehicles, transports and jump infantry (assuming all rumours are correct)

You do not NEED a Monolith. I've done very well without fielding any, just Heavy Destroyers. Plan to throw one in for Ard Boyz though since I only have six Heavy Destroyers.

Well, I'd wait until the new codex comes out. It is scheduled in fall 2011.

Yeah, I'd wait for the new book/figs for sure before starting.

I ALWAYS take 2 monoliths in 1500+. Although i never play less than that with my 'crons, I still agree you should take one as soon as you can fit it in your army.

Did you know? Every sunday from 12 to 5 pm you can get a carvery for £6.95 at the pudding and pye.

That is an interesting build. Could you please show us the list?

Before buying my monoliths, I ran destroyer spam supported by immortals. A fun list, but less efficient than with monoliths.

Now that I have the monoliths, it is difficult for me to leave the tomb world without at least one, usually two. Their survivability, firepower, and necron recycling are just too good to pass on. I also love the WBB in combo with res orb and monolith. It is fun to see the facial expression on the opponent when I get three quarters of my downed necrons back every turn. (evil laughter)

It's just 15 destroyers and 6-9 Heavy Destroyers.

1 Monolith is al you need for up to 1500 points. Put you're army in it and then deepstrike it.

"As I looked into its dead black eyes, I saw the terrible sentinence it had in place of a soul. Behind that was the steel will of its leader. Further still I could feel its primogenitor coldly assessing me from the void. And looking back from the deepest recesses of the aliens mind I perceived what I can describe only as an immortal hunger.
We can slay the tyranids on our worlds, blast their fleets from space, grind their armies to torn and ruined fragments. But their hunger? That is beyond our ability to slay."

Only warriors can arrive via a deep striking monolith and even then you'd need to make the reserve rolls for both units.

The Monolith is a double-edged sword, on one hand it's a very tough and hard-hitting unit that mitigates the footslogging slowness of most Necron infantry and is a brilliant fire magnet to ensure that your opponent doesn't just kill off all the Necrons to get you to Phase Out, but on the other hand it eats up 235pts that you don't get to use on more guys to prevent Phase Out. I'd go for no more than one per 1,000pts as a general rule, though if you're planning to keep the Necron army going into the larger points limits the Monolith Apocalypse formation is possibly the coolest thing next to the Cloudstrike Squadron.

Necrons are going to get many new models with a codex, which GW want people to buy. As you say, lots of people already have monoliths.
GW will therefore make the monolith mediocre compared to the new stuff, so people with existing armies buy as many new models as possible.
See the tyranid carnifex for a nice example of this.

You prevent Phase Out with reserves and careful play. Monoliths both kill things and block LOS effectively, both things the army needs.
