Fellow Dakkanauts & Final Fantasy fans,
What's your top 5?
Me & my mate got talking about it the other day; he reckons 7 was the best, i think that 9 beats it by a narrow margin. IMO 9 was the whole package - involving story, great characters & huge amount of mini-games/side-missions. In a similar vein, I thought that 13 wasn't great at all. The story was far too linear & the characters too under-developed. So, without further adue, here's mine:
1. FF IX
2. FF VII
3. FF X
4. FF XII
5. FF I
So - those of you out there who have played the games, post your top 5 here.

12 is pretty good alright, never played 3.

So . . X & X-2? Didn't really care for X-2, too 'girly' for my liking.

I’ve played quite a few of the FF games but I don’t have enough favourites to populate a top5 list. VIII is my clear favourite due its deep character driven storyline (more so than any of the other FF titles I’ve played). My top 3 includes: 1. VIII 2. X and X-2 (treating these as one game) 3. IX I didn’t like I and II very much as I found the story and gameplay a little shallow. XII and XIII although cinematic, deviated too far away from the FF template and thus didn’t feel like true FF games in my book. VII is an interesting one (so much so that it gets its own paragraph). The story and gameplay was somewhat enjoyable but I found the materia system a little too grindtastic for my likings (this coming from a fan of the VIII junction system!). I also think that they put way too many mini games and side content in the game, so much so that gearing up for end game became a chore. For now I’m leaving VII tentatively unranked but I reckon I’d appreciate it more if it ever got properly remade from the ground up.

Hmmm . . It's been a long long time since I played 8, all I can remember about it is hating the 'draw' system of magic & thinking that the more realistic design of the characters was strange in comparison to 7 & 9. I do remember the story being class though, you're right there.
candy.man wrote:XII and XIII although cinematic, deviated too far away from the FF template and thus didn’t feel like true FF games in my book.
Very much agree with you here. After playing 12 I was thinking that Square were on a slippery slope. In my mind they were starting to focus a bit too much on the gameplay & not enough on the plot or characters, however that said, I thought that 12 was excellent, & the plot was actually quite involving. However they completely missed the mark with 13. The storyline is so clichéd, it's almost cringey - the characters have little depth to them & don't draw you into their world at all. That said, the battle system was great & the game looked amazing, but that wasn't enough to change my mind about it.

Kind of disagree with you here, I loved the mini-games - in fact I'd go so far as to say that they made the game for me. Deviating from the main storyline was definitely the best part of that game, although the main parts were epic too (bar the ending - wasn't great). Speaking of a remake there's one in the works for PS3, isn't there?
Locclo wrote:4. Tactics/War of the Lions
Tactics was waaaay too slow-paced for my liking, although I only played it recently enough, so maybe if I had gotten to it when I was younger (& had a longer attention span when it came to games) I might have liked it better.

A VII remake hasn’t been officially confirmed. Square did a VII tech demo for the PS3 during the PS3’s release. Square has also advised that in order to redo VII in the same style as XIII it would take the same amount of time as building a new game (which they’d prefer using on a new game rather than a remake). I’d say for now Square is busy with XIII-2, Type-0 and Versus XIII. I would predict that work on VII might start once they’ve finished remaking V and VI (probably for the Vita or PS3).
There’s also a chance that Square might be purposely holding back on a VII remake for a rainy day.

No mention of FFIV? Good to see VI was mentioned at least.
Also never got the appeal of FFVII, seems odd to me it's so popular. Must be Barret's fault with "#$%!" in nearly every sentence.

Agreed.
My list:
1) FFVI (III on the NES)
2) FFVII
3) FFX
4) FF Tactics
5) FF XII (it's like an MMO, but without ADD people going AFK all the time!)

Grakmar we are very close.
1) FF6 (3 U.S.)
Bar none the best Final Fantasy to ever be created and the reason the game is a mainstream giant to begin with. Sprite graphics that are amazing and the characters have so much flavor and personality that it blows anything else away. Not to mention Kefka is like the Ultimate bad guy. He's not some super roided mega god, he's just an evil Jester that wants nothing more than to be hurting humanity. Mixing Old lost Technology with Fantasy weapony and setting is amazing.
2) FF9
I'm a sucker for the setting of this game and the look and feel of the characters. Vivi is just great. I also have a major attraction to Fantasy setting games with neo-gothic magic-tech in them. Which brings me to the other great Technology / Fantasy hybrid.
3) FF7
Sephiroth... nuff said.
4) FFTactics
Once again a highlight of sprite graphics. Its why I fell in love with the series to begin with. Mix in the introduction of Judges and great game play and you have yourself a winner. Fabulous storyline too.
5) FF12
MMO Feeling like Grakmar said, yet kept true to the Final Fantasy Feeling. Once again Judges made this game amazing (Best armor in any FF Game) and Balthier set it up as one of the greats. I'm a nut for great characters. Judge Gabranth and Balthier MVPs.
Honorable Mention:
FF4 (U.S. 2)
The games main character was a Darkknight and Evil to start! How great is that! You turn to become a holy paladin later on and really set the bar for a great game. Toss in some badassery with Kain Highwind and Cid as a crazy dwarf Airship Maker and you have yourself a great game.

1. FF VII
2. FF VIII
3. FF VI
4. Ehrgeiz: God Bless The Ring (if you want an actual FF game (because Ehrgeiz is otherwise a pretty lousy game) then I would say shift FF IX up to 4 and put FF XII in 5)

I think that game deserves every bit of it's reputation. I hated it.

4. FF X
5. FF IV
FF IX was just leaps and bounds ahead of all the others, and by far my favorite. My least Fav is a tie between VIII and 13. My god, I hated both of them. DRAAWW MAGIC!
