Makes no sense fluff-wise, is incredibly good in game. No.

GW made Deathwatch rules in 4th edition. Google it and find them yourself.

I'm working on a Codex Space Marines army that is dressed up as Deathwatch and I've been playing in a campaign for the RPG for about 6 months now.

I've read the White Dwarf rules for it, but they are outdated. From my understanding, they were written originally for the 3rd ed codex and then updated for 4th, but never for 5th. It looks like they have some similarities with the Sternguard and I think that gives a starting reference point. Then the way you can use them is to take a kill team as an HQ choice, or you can upgrade members of HQ units, Veterans and Tac Squad members.

I've tossed around some ideas with my friends about what kind of rule set you would make for a codex. One of the things that we thought about was making the base point cost of just about everything in the codex space marines a little higher and bumping the melee attacks and either BS or WS. Also, making special ammunition (maybe just one type?) available to them. Librarians should also be more available, since it's often Captains and Librarians that will lead a Kill Team. We never really got down to anything more substantial than that, but some ideas worth exploring.

Oh, and check out my gallery for some pictures of a Tac squad that I'm just about finished with (just picked up the basing materials I wanted, so will be getting to that in the next few weeks).

They weren't updated because Sternguard are intended to be a 'counts-as Deathwatch' addition to the SM book.

Did one of the authors actually say that, or is that an assumption?

Either way, Sternguard is how I represented a Deathwatch squad in my Crimson Fists army.

Yeah, that makes sense. Even the modeling suggests that the Sternguard should be 'counts as' Deathwatch because they have different Marks of armor... Unfortunately, the models aren't the easiest to convert to deathwatch shoulder pads.

They've not said it in print, no.

Best way to do it.

You mean the actual Finecast/Metal Sternguard models?

I'd just use standard Space Marine bits and season to taste with Black Templar, Grey Knight, and various other bits. The metal DeathWatch shoulder pads from the GW site are excellent.

I meant modifying the Sternguard models. I've put together 2 tac squads and some attack bikes with the Deathwatch shoulder pads. Just got a black templar upgrade kit since I need a 3rd tac squad, and that will let me filter in some Black Templar guys into my force. Also, Grey Knights would not really be appropriate to Deathwatch, fluffwise. Deathwatch is more Xenos centered, while Grey Knights are focused on Demons and are also very secretive and hidden, even from other parts of the Inquisition.

North of your position

I think making rules for them will be hard, as captains of SM chapters can be sergeant there, and there are librarians in 'normal' squads too.

Cool idea for a thread. I'm currently in the process of making a true-scale deathwatch model, not sure if I will upgrade it to a squad yet. I've painted him as an Ultramarine as he has some rather generic weaponry- bolter, bolt pistol and power sword.

I want each member of the squad to show some kind of affiliation with their own chapter's character, represented in their wargear.

So here's some of the ideas I've been throwing around:

Salamanders- (heavy?) flamer, thunder hammer, scaly cloak
Space wolves- slung bolter, bolt pistol and chainsword classic Ragnar style
Imperial Fists- Meltagun, power fist and melta bombs
Dark Angels- Bolter/plasma combi weapon, plasma pistol/ relic blade?

This would give me a squad of 5 including the Ultra. This gives me: 2 all- rounders/ mid range (Ultra and DA), one anti-armour (IF), one special/ heavy weapons guy (Salamander) and one CC guy (SW, who also has a bolter )

The 6th guy will either be a Librarian or a blood Angel, I'm kinda torn right now. I am toying with the idea of a sniper, and I sort of want a brutal sadistic knife fighting guy with 2 knives and/or 2 SMG-type bolters, but currently I don't think the BA really fit this with their new look. Maybe a Flesh Tearer marine? Who would the sniper be? Long range support may come in the form of a Razorback (Truescaled??? :S) with twin- linked lascannons.

In case you hadn't noticed, this squad is purely for display purposes to look cool, I have no intention of gaming with them. What do you think about the idea and the last guy with no designation yet?

For painting,it should be

All black armour
Silver left arm
Siver shoulder edging
Silver chest emblem with gold centre
the eyes should be dark red
The right shouder pad should have the colours of the parent chapter's shoulder pad(blue for ultramarines, yellow for SW,green for DA)along with the chapter icon.
The left shouder pad shold be similar to GK,with engraved script. The Icon is the top 2/3 of the Inquisitorial I thing, with a gold skjull and crossbnes over it.

To this purpose,I would suggets using GK to represent DW,but jusrt count them as SM.Or GK.Whatever you want

The Ultramarines have a disproportionate number of skilled marksmen, according to the codex. This is supposedly a large part because of Sergeant Telion. Probably best place for a Sniper.

Thanks for the input guys, and the praise!

I love the idea for a Raven Guard Sniper. I didn't think of them but that would be very fitting. So here are a couple of painting in progress pics

For the sword I'm going to try my hand at OSL on his armour... we'll see how it turns out! When I get the rest of the squad (still have to buy the parts) I'll put up a proper wip log.

Very nice, I am liking this.

One thing that I found to work to give the black armor some depth and not look so flat, was to mix in a little bit of mythril silver into black paint and then drybrush that onto the black armor. Give it a try in a small area (perhaps on the backpack or a leg... Somewhere that will be easy to cover back up if you don't like it) and see if you like how it looks.

Holy face...
What did you use to make the back half of the torso? Was it pure green stuff?

in Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion. This has actually happened in a game. Hell, a marine can throw his bolt shells and do more damage than by shooting his boltgun

I've seen a fan-made Deathwatch modification to the 5e SM Codex, they upped Tactical Marines to 20pts a guy, gave them Preferred Enemy against one Xenos race, and gave them one type of special ammunition off the Sternguard list. They also have a few more special weapon options, but don't get any of the free ones in the Space Marines Codex.

Yeah I agree he has apoint but other SM codexes are boring, Deathwatch has actually some spice for the imperium.
