Wargear: Bolt Pistol, Bolter, Frag and Krak Grenades, Power Armor
Rules: Relentless, Fearless
Aid Unlooked For: The Legion of The Damned always start the game in reserve and always arrive by Deep Strike. They may re-roll the Deep Strike Scatter Dice and pick either result.
Unyielding Specters: The Legion has a 3+ Invulnerable Save
In The Darkest Hour: The Legion Of The Damned may be fielded as an Elites Choice in any Imperial Codex. Independent Characters may not join a Legion of The Damned Squad.
Stalwart Stride: The Legion Of The Damned are as tough as any Space Marine, but it is in the true holiness of melee that they truly shine; each Legionnaire has two separate Wounds Values; 1 Wound for Shooting, and Two for Close Combat. If either is reduced to zero, the model is removed as a casualty. For the purposes of all special rules, the Legionnaires count as 1 wound models, but count as 2 wound models when the unit is Locked In Combat.
30 Points Per Model
35 For Sergeant
Squad Consists of: 1 Sergeant, 4-9 Legionnaires
Upgrades are as listed in Codex: Space Marines

I like that making legion for any IoM cool, as I would love to field them with my Flesh Tearers, but the whole two wound thing kind of urks me. I guess that was to make them more durable because they are space marine ghosts that die when they deep strike.. I would make them T5 and maybe a sternguard bolter for 35pts.

Special Issue Ammunition doesn't really make sense to me, since it's a shooty thing and LotD are supposed to be a balance of shooty and assaulty.
The two wounds thing was me just trying out an idea, wondering how it might work.

The special ammo is to give them an extra punch when deep striking and since they are relentless, they can assault after double tapping into some poor sobs.

Don't care for the multiple wounds thing, but I agree, they need something balance their lack of CC. I'd rather give them a loadout like this:
Bolt Pistol, Power Sword, Boltgun w/ Special Issue.
That way, they get extra attacks on the charge, ignore armor, and still get double tap.

I wouldn't give them a power sword, but maybe cc attacks rend, but it would come with a price.

I like this idea of the extra CC Wound, it would certainly make them more VFM is they didn't die very easily.

Still, Special Issue Ammunition doesn't make sense, fluff wise, and if I did that, no one would ever take Sternguard because Legion would be so much better.

Sternguard are are cheaper than the legion and can take combi weapons and transports. Legion always have to deep strike and come in reserves. Legion are very weak when they come in because they have bolters, yeah you can rapid fire but after that, they will get shot up or assaulted. With special ammo they have a boost when come out and T5 makes them more survivable when they come on.

Do Chaos Marines have AP 3 Bolters?
I wouldn't say no to giving them Hellfire Rounds, but not all Special Issue Ammunition.
I'm also considering making a whole Legion Of The Damned fandex built on whatever comes out of this thread.

Are you kidding me? 2W, able to double-tap with special ammo before charging, all power weapons....you guys do realize they've got 3++ invuln's, right?
This is what I would do. Keep the codex entry with only 3 changes:
- replace Slow & Purposeful with Relentless
- FNP
- Poisoned 4+ rounds (hellfire is too good on relentless models)
Then bump up the price to 35pts (40pts for sergeant).

Unfortunately the double wound rule works almost exactly the same as having FNP in close combat. The only difference is with power weapons that don't instant death.

My point; the Double Wounds in Close Combat is already better than FNP.

The reason I suggested FNP is because there is actually a Legion of the Damned Apoc formation. The units in that formation get both the Fearless and FNP USR's to represent their supernatural toughness.
Just an idea. Run with what you like.

Maybe the "double wounds in CC" thing could be saved for something that's honor bound to die in Close Combat. Personally, I'd like to see some variant of that as a replacement for Feel No Pain, get rid of the luck aspect of it.

Upgrades are as listed in Codex: Space Marines
That would be my ideal Legion squad. And, I'd actually take them then. Some may say this looks op or cheesy, but personally I think a semi superhero elite elite that's not a one route pony might make the game a bit more fun.

Well, we don't want to make a "unit to end all units!". We also don't want to replace Sternguard, LotD should be an alternative to them, serving a slightly less shooty but more CC function.

Doc Robert, I feel your rules miss the fundamental problem with the existing LotD in that these warp-bound, highly resistant and powerful Space Marines still die just as quickly to a lasgun. That is their main problem; they're very expensive models who die in droves to small arms fire it seems. FNP is the simplest solution to this and yet you don't want to opt for it; it also benefits ranged and close combat.
I'd personally recommend one of several possible changes to the LotD:
- Str 5, T5: Better in close combat and tougher without going OTT.
- FNP: Tougher to small arms, with a 3++ against heavier weaponry which would negate FNP. Possibly CCW+ BP to boot.
- 2 wounds: Tougher in close combat and against ranged weaponry. That they'd be tougher than PM's is arguably a problem and they could be overpowered in such a state, but it's a characterful, all-round benefit.
- May also want to add +1 to their reserve roll.
BronzeJon; I'd honestly say that the idea you describe is far too powerful: 2 wounds, 2 attacks, FNP, rending, AP3 bolters at 35pts! Far too much IMHO.

They are still too tough.. 5T, FNP, 3++, 2W? You need 6 melta *wounds* to kill one.. Full unit of fire dragons on average kills less than one.. With wound allocation not even that..
You need about 30 marines double tapping to kill one (no wound allocation). No way that is close to balanced..

I agree. You should have one of (two at very most) FNP/T5/2W, but three is far too much, particularly for their cost IMHO! Tougher even than the 55pts Paladins!
