Subject: Armies on Parade Board - Eldar Webway
|

My son decided he wanted to make a board for his Eldar incorporating a webway portal. After some rough planning we came up with the general idea on the attached pdf.
MDF board now purchased as well as base materials. I will post pictures as I go along ...
It seemed a shame not to also enter myself, so I have designed a rough plan for a Nid board - going for the flood with models approach, so scenery a bit more minimal.

First steps on the Eldar Board. Floor tile for floor and pizza base for rim ....
Polyfilla run the edges to smooth them down and diloute pva on ring so it won't melt when sprayed.

Decided on a galaxy effect picture in the bottom of the pool. Painted in acrylic, sealed in varnish and then Vallejo water effects added:
Webway pylons cut out of foamboard, but he wasn't great with a craft knife. After discussion we decided to give them a much more rundown look and I "weathered" them with a knife/sanding paper. Worryingly he has decided to paint them black and red - we will have to see how that work out ...

Nice galaxy at the bottom of the pool, the pylons do appear slightly un eldary in asthetic, but weathered they should look fine and practice makes perfect. Black and red could be interesting, though i would try to push for something else, try showing him all the craftworld colours along with their respective themes, as such come up with a strong background and narrative. Where is the portal? Why is it in a rough state? Why has an army had to use it? Who are they fighting? Name characters and try to gain accolades for them in games, e.g. if an autarch kills a carnifex add some leftover carnifex bits onto the board or his base and add 'carnifex slayer to his title eg. Hopefully you will both develop more ideas for the board to better convey a very individual army.
I'd really love a closeup on the galaxy by the way.

Hi. Resin has been in for 36 hours and still setting. As soon as it's dry I will try to get a better photo - that first one is a bit blurry. Picture was essentially based on the colour one in the BRB.
My son designed the shape - not my responsibility! So saying, I have now sprayed them black and they look quite imposing. With some runes painted on and vines draping over them they should do the trick. I hope ...
Latest plan with undergrowth is that where parts of the webway have broken off and fallen plants have begun to grow back but the remainder is a wasteland.

Holidays have got in the way, but current position:
Portals have basic black/red paint and have been cut down and distressed. Next for washes/highlights and decoration. These will be magentized to the base for ease of trnasportation.
Board has 4 magents sited equally apart. Base has been textured with polyfilla and then painted in brown acrylic.
Bad picture again. Camera is struggling on the glare from the water effects in the pool, but you get the general idea.

Hi. Eldar board finished, will try and post pictures later ...
Plastic ivy from fish centre trailed over the webways and foliage clumped around fallen parts on board. My son was having problems with superglue so I took over from him to stick the foliage down. Moss sprinkled on and coat of varnish on top.
Models wise, we decided on the number 5 - so selected for the board are:
5 rangers, 5 dire avengers, 5 banshees, 5 scorpions, 5 rangers with platform, 5 reapers. HQs are avatar and farseer and 2 falcons in the rear.
Eldar paint scheme is based on blue/yellow/gold - ice blue and regal blue for the contrast.
I now have less than 24 hours to get some sand down on my Nid table. If I stick about 50-60 models on the board then I might just get away with it!!

Finally downloaded some more photos.
Basic flora on board. Broken parts of webway stuck down and foliage built up around these.
Moss then added round foliage.
Close up of the webway portals.Magnetized to sit on the board.
Board together prior to packing. Miniatures on - rule of 5 applied to all units. 2 falcons in the rear, avatar on the ruin and farseer fronting.
Close up of the board. Automatically Appended Next Post: Final result. Two boards tied for first place votes - went to tie-breaker.
My Nid board one, with my son's Eldar board coming second. So a clean sweep ... and no there wasn't only two entries!
Pics/details of the Nid board to follow, but for anyone who wants to look http://www.facebook.com/#!/GWKettering photos on the GW Kettering facebook site including my nice winners medallion. Need to think about improving board if I decide to do games day ...
