So, with Ogres having a much anticipated release, how do you think they will fare as an army in the competitive arena, and how hard will they be for aspiring Tyrants to master?

Here is the Rumor compilation for those who don't know what is coming http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/383862.page

with that said, I think they will become a rock solid army.

and some suitibly Ogrey picture to get us in the mood for the update.

They will be a solid army no questions asked.

I think they like the tomb kinds need the support of their magic.

There will be lots of complaints because it will not be a point and click army.

Looking forward to it tho cant be worse than GK in 40k

Also What is that picture looks freaking epic.

I started as an Ogre player. I love their fluff the best but there was just a few things I don't like about them. I tend to play small battles so their expensive lords and heros made it very hard to play them at that level. Also the WS3, I mean come on if I'm going to throw down 48pts for an Iron Gut make him WS4 at least. Because of this I made the move to Beastmen, giving me a Combat/Magic army that fares better with access to rule book lores and cheaper models with higher WS. I'm glad I'm sitting on a bunch of models but to be completely honest, and I am bending slightly at the waist with my knees bent to a 45 degree angle my feet shoulder width apart as I brace for the impact of the hate.. I am not liking the new models. I KNOW!! I do like they kept the look of the Ogres that I like but the new stuff I'm just not digging. I'm also sure it's going to cost an army and a leg. I am eager to see what Butcher/Tyrant models they come out with though.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

If I pick one up.

I like the look of them the models seem cool never got to play against them tho :(

Still this army is going to be a solid army if built right.

Holy crap, Ogres look buff! Reading the rumors they seem pretty awesome.

They were one of my original fav armies, but I never completely got behind the whole lardass concept. Yeah, they were always scary, but you still chuckled a little seeing that big belly smash you to death.

I'm going to go with Mid tier and tricky to play(not exactly hard, but you won't be able to just grab and go like maybe DE or WoC).

It looks like Ogres are still going to suffer somewhat from lack of armor saves and probably lower Leadership, so it's not going to be a point and click army. I know the stuff we have already is generally getting cheaper, but that's really just going to make some room for the new stuff. Initiative is also going to be a pain too. 3 Wounds is great all, but you're going to lose some guys before you can swing.

At this point, I imagine Ogres generally playing about the same as before, but with more tools to do the job. Much like how TKs and O&G are now(not a bad thing at all).

/post by an Ogre lover just thrilled to death at an update and loving the current rumors.

I'm loving the idea of cannons and metal. I like that aspect more than the caveman approach, which is kind of covered by Orcs.

I was literally just working out how to create a Chaos Dwars army using Skaven rules (the experimental rules on FW seem kinda lame so far).

If I created an Ogre Tribe they'd certainly be the Iron Butt Slavers. Great traders with the Chaos Dwarfs. Hell, I loved leadbelchers even though they were pretty sucky.

I'd like NOT to have mage, but I think the way the game is now, you kind of have to. Unless you're Dwarf.

Ironguts are getting redone. most likely as a Irongut/Maneater box. and all the classic metal Maneaters will be going OOP

Bulls are staying as they are.

Yeah, I was reading up. Because Ogres apparently have more weapon options so they need to include those in the sprues. When you only got a few Core, I hope they get a bunch of options.

I don't play Fantasy, but I've heard the same thing about the Orks & Goblins and the Tomb Kings books - every unit is useable, no immediate cookie cutter builds, and at a middle level power level.

We can only hope that they'll continue this pattern with the Ogres.

The Irongut box has been pulled from the shelves and so has the battalion.

The Maneaters going OOP is just a rumor, but I am inclined to belive most of the rumors at this point. the Army Book is being released in less then a month.

I wish we wouldn't split all the threads, because I only go to WHFB threads and don't care about 40k rumors, but the rumors subforum has lots of photos leaked from the book. As well as some of the ogre web sites. They pretty much agree on 90% of the details.

As I understand it they are selling out the previous boxes due to the box art change (no more painting just the models themselves). It would be nice to see a combo box though. I wouldn't expect the irongut models to change though, maybe new sprues.

I can't wait to see how the new army plays.

Thats what I would expect. a new sprue simply added to the existing box, which has plenty of room for additional sprues.

I am thinking the new book will make different styles viable.

as always, Deathstarring will be popular. the significant points drop bulls recieve, and increase in durability, will make larger and multiple deathstars a good possability. Bulls have dropped from 17.5 gnoblars to 15 gnoblars and come with LA for free and will now do impact hits at any charge distance(D3 hits if they roll a 10 or higher for the distance)

MMU will become more viable. units of 6-9 will be more devestating for the same reasons as Deathstars.

the Monsters will become a vital support role for many armies. the ASL aura for the Thundertusk will be infinitly useful. it basically means we can strike before everyone except HEs and others with ASL, who simply lose their reroll to hit.

Stonehorns and Mournfangs become flankers that will charge a unit in tandem with another ogre unit. the Impact hits from these guys alone can win combat. Mournfangs do D3(+1 if they roll 10+ for distance) and Stonehorns do 3D3(+3 if 10+ is rolled)

I figured that 6 Mournfangs, a unit that costs 390 pts(with FC, but no other upgrades) will be dishing out anywhere between 36 and 42 attacks on the charge, up to 15 of them autohits at str5.

Stonehorns do between 3 and 9 impact hits, averaging 6 with a 16% chance of doing between 6 and 12 with an average of 9. in short, 84% of the time you will do an average of 6, 16% of the time you will do an average of 9. all at Str6 too. this doesn't include the Thunderstomp.

Here is what I wrote on the Ogrestronghold about the potential usefulnesses of the 3 monster units we are getting.

Stonehorn:

Ok, this monster is big, scary, and does its damage in combat. 3D3 impact hits on the charge is pretty nasty, thats an average of 6 with the potential of 3 or 9. If it rolls a 10 or higher it does an additional 3 hits. and at Str6 they are most likely wounding on 2s and even wound many tougher troops on 3s or 4s.

against Str3 and 4 troops, its unlikely to take very many wounds, if any, in return. this means it, on the charge, has some significant combat rez. a fully ranked unit is pulling 4. this monster will usually win on the charge. the problem is that the enemy will be steadfast.

I think how this monster needs to be used is as a flanker/dual charger. it will charge an enemy unit along side a unit of bulls. the bulls do what they do best while the Stonehorn just piles on combat rez. the enemy will be unlikely to be steadfast after taking a beating from a unit of bulls and a stonehorn and will break.

this gives us a reliable way of breaking enemy ranks. by literally destroying their ranks through casualities. the stonehorn makes us better at what we do best, thumping thinlings. On top, the ogre can have a Harpoon for sniping big monsters when he has the chance and also contributes his attacks to combat.

This is also a mount option for the hunter, which means you can potentially have quite a few of these dudes in your army.

Thundertusk:

This beastie is actually more useful then the Stonehorn. Its its ASL aura thats important. the snowball and ranged attacks are icing on the cake.

As ogres have I2, we are going last against everyone except great weapons and lizardmen. the ASL aura suddenly means we go before EVERYONE except against troops with ASF, who simply lose their reroll to hit.

Against units that arn't hordes, this could potentially mean we reduce the attacks our ogres recieve. we could actually wipe out units that are small enough. It also allows smaller units of bulls to be potentially useful. they get to strike first before taking any casualities and won't have to worry about losing attacks.

This guy makes our troops massivly more effective. it also has a stonethrower, chaintrap(throwing weapon with KB), and Harpoon just when it couldn't get any more awsome. and 2 ogres for CC fighting too.

Mournfangs:

Ogres don't have a cavelry unit. You might say that, with M6 on everyone, we don't need a cavelry unit.

How many times has some fast enemy unit gotten behind your lines and started killing scraplaunchers or pinging musket balls into our ogres flanks. you just ignored them because you couldn't catch them and it would expose your flanks to an enemy charge.

Mournfangs can actually chase down enemy cavelry and flankers and expect to win 99% of the time due to a 3+ or 2+ save and 7 attacks. Units of 6 can also act as our own flankers. charging enemy flanks to break their ranks and get massive combat resolution. D3 impact hits, 7 attacks, and a stomp mean these bad boys can potentially do 11 wounds each on the charge. a unit of 6 can do 42 with 9 supporting attacks.

they function like a slightly faster Stonehorn. they charge an enemy unit in the flank while bulls take the front and completely destroy the unit together.

with their M8, they are also faster then other heavy cavelry and can swiftly take enemy warmachines out.
