Hey there folks, took the Wolfstar to 'Ard Boyz this year- here's the link to my batreps

http://rumorsofheresy.blogspot.com/2011/08/ard-boyz-40k-prelims-battle-report-with.html

Lots of pictures and stuff- pretty similar in format to the rest of my batreps! Enjoy, feel free to post here or on the blog (or both, lol)

Thanks for the report.
Game 1- You clubbed a seal pup to death (ROTFLOL).

Game 2-going 2nd in a fixed turn game with objectives, GEE I wonder if that was the correct choice?

Game 3-beat one of the local Big Fish small pond syndroms.

Congrates on 2nd.

Game 1- He was a nice guy, sad we had to meet in such an unrelaxed atmosphere. Certainly a little sad that if I wanted to win/place in the tournament that I had to beat him in that manner.

Game 2- I'm still not 100% convinced it was the right choice. Having the option to shoot down his Storm Ravens on Turn 1 or restrict their deployment might have been significant enough to forfeit the advantage of 2nd turn. I'm of the opinion that it was certainly not a no-brainer choice though :-p

Game 3- Glad I could beat a local Big Fish- it must mean that I'm at least a slightly bigger fish or something, right? Right? :-p

Thanks for the congrats, assuming you're being genuine about it

Even if not, it's cool. I write batreps for almost every tournament I go to, for my own records, and as a resource other people can use to gauge how effective certain lists can be in a competitive setting. I certainly didn't write it to brag about how awesome I am.

I have to say though now that I have 50+ posts and am no longer an "Unfortunate Ungor" and instead have apparently grown big horns, my awesomeness level *has* increased quite a bit. :-p

Hey congratz on the 2nd place victory! Your list was similar to mine but with a bunch more Grey Hunters in place of Njal, and it looks as if it worked well. Nicely done!

Seems like Thunderwolf is all the new rage in competitive Space Wolves. Looks like many of the Space Wolf players who advanced used TWC in their army (as well as the obligatory 15-missile long fangs). Congrats.

Haha, yep, I'd say I'm pretty trendy :-p

I *have* been playing that same list for over a year now though. Do I get cool points for liking a list *before* it gets popular? lol

As to the 15 missiles- yep. Obligatory. One thing I noticed though: they don't pull their weight at 2500 nearly as much as they do in 2000.

Neither do the ThunderWolves, generally.

I noticed that I was quite reliant on the Grey Hunters this tournament, which was actually in a way a much nicer feeling. If the Wolfstar failed, I still had a very solid foundation.

Thanks for reading

I only ran 10 Missile Launchers in my list, but my Thunderwolves were easily the Men of the Match in my second and third games, and technically they won me the game in my first by killing the traitor. Njal did a decent bit by blowing up vehicles at the last possible second when it looked like all else was going to fail, but if he held them at bay, it was the Thunderwolves who broke them. Knowing how and when to commit them to a fight is key, and mostly I used them for hunting down vehicles. Pretty sure they had a higher vehicle kill count by the end of the tournament than any two other units combined.

Question on the TWC though, you said you have TH+SS, SS, BOMB, Norm

why not run TH, SS,SS+BOMB,Norm

or would you rather keep the bomb alive opposed to the TH?

Nice Batreps, thoroughly enjoyed reading them not to mention I'm playing a similar list in round 2 ^^

Alderionn: Heh, my Thunderwolves often kill more vehicles than the rest of my army put together, so I see where you're coming from

Good job on your games, I'd honestly rate the lists you played in reverse order (first list was best, last was worst), which is ironic given that you won all you games :-p

jdjamesdean: The bomb isn't even something I actually use. I just use it as a cheap way to make the unit itself complex. As such, I'd *much* rather keep the Hammer alive.

Silly as it sounds, sometimes I'll even take a 4+ cover save on a 'normal' guy rather than a 3++ on the hammer/shield. Remember, that hammer is a very large majority of the squad's hitting power (not counting the two Lords). I want to keep him alive as long as possible, since he's the one who can (and often does) kill anything.

The rest are all fancy wound markers, who can kill stuff in limited quantities. Always rather protect the guys I want to keep alive than have the meltabomb live for some weird reason :-p

That being said, I'm considering taking a shield on the bomb guy as well, and maybe even on the regular guy. It would help me a lot against Grey Knight Pally stars, since people seem to love them in the area I play in, lol

With the way my Thunder Hammer Lord performed in a mech environment, I'm honestly considering running him as a standard in my 1,500 and 1,750 lists from now on instead of the Wolf Claw. For some reason, the ability to choose between re-rolling hits and wounds ALWAYS screws me. I choose to re-roll hits, and I hit with everything, then roll 1's and 2's to wound. If I choose to re-roll wounds, I whiff every attack. This event has happened in EVERY. SINGLE. GAME. that I have played with the Claw Lord. I'm seriously considering running a Frost Blade from now on simply so I don't have a re-roll, because my Thunder Hammer Lord doesn't have one and he seems to have no problem hitting and wounding.

As for the Storm Shield thing, I have started running a Storm Shield on every single Thunderwolf, even if it means taking fewer of them. The unit seems to do better when I can always take a 3++ save against anything thrown at me, especially since I seem to roll ungodly well with saves on Thunderwolves. Otherwise Power Weapons seem to chew through the unit, or an Ordnance blast kills someone.
