So here I was, thinking of buying a new model, a rather big one actually, the Orc Warboss on Wyvern. I was never a big fan of metal minis, especially big ones, since I find them rather hard to put together and make them stand upright. So I was thrilled when I saw that GW made this model available in Finecast. Before going on and ordering it though, I checked around the forums and learned that Finecast models actually have many flaws and miscasts. Of course I immediately backed up a bit, and decided to stall such a purchase for now.

So my question is: has GW made any announcement (official or otherwise) concerning the low quality of these so called "Finecast" minis? And if so, where, cause I'd like to see it.
Thanks everyone.

GW as a whole believes their poor quality is a feature of the new models we'll all be buying. They may have admitted their problems to themselves, hell they may evey be doing something to fix it. But the ego of the giant permits no wrongdoing and does not apologize.

That being said I've never had a problem getting a miscast replaced from the Customer Service guys. So you should be fine. Better call them to be sure that they're still handling replacements though. The last time I requested a replacement was right before FineCast launched. I was getting an Autarch replaced and the CS guy was mentioning that the replacement policy was going to be revised. I don't know exactly what that entails, I have not had to send anything back since.

They didn't conclude that things were fine, they said there was a 95% success rate, whatever THAT means.

You can always exchange it for a new one if it's poorly cast. That's a hassle, but pretty much your only option other than to try and fix it yourself.

I'm hoping the bad casts are just growing pains and in time the quality will improve, but I'm not ready to hold my breath yet.

That said I do have a finecast hive tyrant somewhere on my list, not very high, but it's on there somewhere...

The wyvern is plastic, though.

Are you sure? You may be right, I can't say I remember correctly, and anyway, now I can only see the Finecast model on GW site anyway.

No it isn't.

The Wyvern was metal and is now resin.

It was never plastic.

No, they have not.

I would occasionally glance through the News and Rumors forum and/or Dakka Discussions for an update of this kind. I can assure you, someone will post that sort of information as soon as it is available.

Just got a box of Wracks this past weekend, though it's been sitting on the shelf since the Wracks initial release so it's from a fairly early batch of Finecast, and it is the worst quality castes kit I've ever gotten of any material from any company. Emailed customer service like I have in the past when I've had other problems, but this time their reply was that I had to phone in. Phoned customer service and they're sending me a new box of Wracks, so the replacement policy is still in place. Hoping the new box will be better than the first.

Haven't actually purchased any "Finecast" stuff myself yet, but all of the stuff I see in my local shop in blisters looks meh... In typical GW fashion it looks like they are using the same exact molds, substantially cheaper crafting material, and trying to charge a good deal more for it...

The Finecast stuff I have seen looks, well, fine. A few minor problems (and a little more flash to take care of) but nothing that is unfixable, and nothing more than what I would expect on a metal model. I think that, like in any new method of doing things, there has been a few bugs. But GW's customer support has always given me top notch treatment, and if they screw the pooch on a model, they replace it. I think you will be fine on any Finecast purchases you make, although it sounds like the one you are after is plastic anyway.

I've purchased about 5 finecast minis myself and of those only 1 of them had unfixable issue with it (libby missing the top half of his stormbolter ) all of the rest of them were fine...even astorath with a slight miscast in the ribbons he stands on was fine since he was ok. All told I would say the biggest reason it seems the finecast line is bad is that the people who get the bad ones have been more vocal about the issues than those who have gotten up to standard models. I would probably agree with the 95% success rate with a 5% error margin on that number from time to time. And yeah GW is pretty good about their replacement policy is pretty solid so if there is something wrong you should be able to get the damaged/miscast piece replaced with little issue.

So there has been no difficulties getting new kits if you have a badly flawed one? I want to get the Finecast Lord of Change but I don't want to drop 60 bucks unless I'm sure I can get a replacement if it's flawed. The clamshells let you check before you buy, the boxes don't. Thanks for any info.

Buy it. If you have a flaw call their customer service hotline and complain. They will resend you another one. If that one has a flaw they will resend and offer you a refund. I've bought approx 12 kits and I haven't had anything other than excessive flash on my model. Like forgeworld, anything that is bent just needs to be put in warm water and bent back into position.

This is SOOOO TRUE. I've received bad plastics (no bodies for my marauders, just LOTS of arms and heads!) and I've bought a bad metal box (second purchase - a Devastator Squad had clumps of pewter for heavy weapons!). Its bound to happen from time to time and its a new product.

I think they should. Even Apple know when to swallow some humble pie and fess up to making a balls of things. But GW want to pretend there isn't an issue because they want to perpetuate the belief that A) it's undisputed fact they make the best figures and B) they are never wrong about anything.

The way GW announced the finecast price increases and trade embargo was the most bare-faced piece of spin since the sexed-up Iraq dossier.

Don't expect an apology, they don't even want the number of finecast returns discussed as I recall that retailers on here have been told not to repeat it publicly.

I have the Finecast Warboss on wyvern, it's a really really nice model, only minor flaws including a bubble at the nostril and slight mold slip that is only visible on some scales. The rider is PERFECT.

Here's a couple pics. This reminds me, I should finish this guy! I haven't even started on the rider yet!

Hey, blue Wyvern! Good looking!
Thanks everyone for all your responses, I think most have agreed that there is good chance the model will be fine, and if it is not, they will most certainly change it. Excellent!

GW doesn't talk to the outside world, nor do they ever recognize the people that buy their products as being real.

This detachment allows them to do what they do...

Great, thanks for the confirmation. I have been waiting for the Lord of Change in finecast and then when it came time to pull the trigger I got cold feet... I'll be ordering him and a few other finecasts I have had my eye on.
