Hey there Dakkaites, nauts and isms.
Recently I have improved my painting technique up to the point where I use some pre-made GW washes. Yay!
This is going great, I love them! They are always the right consistency and the effects are just what I'm looking for. Devlan Mud in particular is one of my favourites. <3
But I just noticed something... The stuff smells horrible! I sniffed the model I used it on and now it smells too! :(
So I have a few questions concerning this vile liquid for you.
1 Will the smell fade away? And if so, how long will it take?
2 Will the smell be blocked when a varnish is applied? I have an even smellier varnish so this could be interesting...
Thanky in advance.

Dakkaisms? Would that be something along the lines of: It's your fault the paint smells bad.
Anyway, my Devlan Mud doesn't really smell much worse than any of my paints, but I imagine when it dries it'll be less stinky. Also, if you give it a good covering of varnish, that should seal in the smell, as I'm pretty sure that varnish is airtight.

I know, the washes spells awful - but yes, it fades away. I just sniffed on a model I had put gryphonne sepia just yesterday, and it doesn't smell at all, so don't worry.

It fades - good thing too, cause I found many of the GW Products, specially Washes and Foundation Paints, give off a very foul odour.

Yeah, I "tested" a few other washes and I just used an ink... Eww! It seems like most of them smell really bad.
Good to know it will go away!

Nope, it's no good. Try as I might, I cannot work out what you're saying here. Would you be so kind as to rephrase this?

Les is the guy from Awesomepaintjob - a god amongst us lowly Dakkaites ;-).
Les makes his own washes and has released the recipe on DakkdaDakka. Really great stuff, I followed his recipes and made some washes for myself - they work great and don't smell at all.
Cheers,

The strange thing is that different batches of stuff smells differently, the next Devlan mud you get might not smell at all. So far, the worst smelling item I have ever gotten from GW has been a bottle of Necron Abyss foundation paint, it just smells rancid. But it covers well and the smell fades eventually.

The smell reminds me that when it's empty if it's not gryphon sepia I will never buy it again.

Hmm, this black ink smells bad too, but not as bad as the Devlan Mud. And the Badab Black wash doesn't smell that bad at all... Maybe the colour black just smells nice.

Seeing as you play tyranids, I was wondering if you use an airbrush.

I find devlan mud smells of Marmite.
None of my devlan mud miniatures smell, I find it only smells when it is in the pot. Strange, or maybe I have worse nostrils than you lot.
Anyway, it's not like anybody would be smelling your miniatures, the eye's are a more effective tool for judging paint jobs.

No, I use a normal little paintbrush. I am a bit of a noob and won't even think of using a professional tool like an airbrush until I at least know what I am doing.

Hmm, people smelling each other's minis to decide wich is the best painted one... Now that would be an interesting sight.

Insert comment about the socio-religious cultural practices of the person who smells models

I guess smelling a painted mini can help you determine whether the painter has accidentally dipper their paintbrush in their drink or not.

Badab black is the WORST offender. I left both open over night by accident and the devlan mud smells alot less pungent, badab black, though lessened alot, still offends the nostrils.

I've done that when painting my blood angels, nothing is more terrible than drinking a glass of perrier with mechrite red.

That was good, it's awesome, but it take a lot of work out of shading, and gives that dirty look to boot, a reason it's called magical cheating juice.
