In your wardrobe, looking for Narnia.

Lol, well I find it a highly useful smelly liquid. The neutral brown colour works on almost anything. I guess having to live with the horrible smell for a few days is a decent price to pay for instant awesome.

Devlan mud is a super simple color it's a basic dark umber. If you dislike the smell that much Les' wash recipe can remedy your offended olfactory senses.

You just taught me a new word, yay!

And yeah I have found the thread and am looking into it. Producing washes seems like fun, maybe I can even add a flowery scent to them.

Lol. Its always good to expand your horizons. I'm not sure how it will work out but I think I'm going to replace water with future and a measure of Tamiya flat base. Combined wit the matte medium it should run more flat...my washes have been coming out shiny lately.

I made my own wash, just watered down paint really far with water. I also add a drop or 2 (depending on batch size, of course) of dish detergent as a surfactant.

That'll make it smell like lemons....or oranges, or limes, or pretty flowers....whatever your preference in dish detergent may be.

Works ok, so I only use it for large projects (like washing vehicles). I'll be using Les's recipe from now on.

So, if you're desperate...

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

I've done that when painting my blood angels, nothing is more terrible than drinking a glass of perrier with mechrite red.

You're not a true hobbyist until you realized you dipped your brush full of paint/wash in your drink, then decide "To the Warp with it, I'm thirsty!" You then proceed to drink your beverage anyways. I've done that a couple times. XD

They don't smell any worse to me than Blood red, midnight blue or bad moon yellow.

All of these smell bad as a side effect of the pigment base and carrier combination. It's a paint thing.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

My brother and I always say how much most of the washes smell. I've found devlan mud to smell the worst, followed closely by gryphonne sepia. Badab black has a bit of a nose to it, as well. Floral notes, with hints of lavender and lilac... (not really)

I've never noticed any of the other washes smelling particularly bad, only those three. But the smell certainly does hit like a stinky fist when you open them up.

On the other hand, I've grown to quite enjoy the smell of primer and glue. Call me crazy and probably fume-addled, but there's something to be said about the excitement of assembling and priming new models... Of course, everyone else in the house objects!

Different batches, even of the same wash, will have different smells. I stocked up on Devlan mud, Badab black and gryphonne Sepia a few months (month?) back, and each bottle is like an olfactory lottery.

I lick my paintbrushes, so I figure its not any different.

I have all three of these and Ive used them for years...and I honestly don't think they smell at all. The first time I really said "well that's odd" was when I opened my first foundation paint, and then my first GW wash. while the other paints were still in the bolter shell pots I thought it was the container itself. Now I've decided its the vehicle for the two newer types. Foundation paints smell like Smelly Primer and washes smell like old gym socks.

The smells are because foundation and washes use natural pigments, so they can be stinky for one reason or another. My only wash that actually even has a smell is the thraka green, and boy does it smell, very strong sickly sweet like pure natural licorice.

Calthan brown smells like walnuts
