Vote which codex you think is the best based on: Fluff, Artwork, Style, Humor and rules.
I vote Dark Eldar, because the codex is fan bloody tastic.
Close second would be Orks.

Yeah, it seemed to me that the Chaos Space Marines codex is the best start for beginners, fluff wise. It gives you a much better idea of the history of the Imperium, compared to the glory hog space marine codex.

Dark Eldar and Orks. Great fluff that portrays itself well on the battlefield, and plenty of viable builds.

On moon miranda.

The Imperial Guard codex gives great fluff on how the Imperium itself operates and has a ton of units to describe, and gives a much better view of the average conflict in the 41st millenium that doesn't involve nigh mythical forces.
The DE codex was quite brilliant and very interesting as well.
EDIT: That said, the most interesting codex releases ever were Codex: Chaos 2nd Edition and Codex: Chaos Space Marines 3.5E (2002)

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Snarkysnarksnark. Just because you play Space Wolves doesn't mean you do longfang razorspam. You can do the same thing with any flavor of Marines. As a player of multiple Marine armies, I can say I've never done this, nor have I ever intended to. If you play a fluffy list, there won't be any of this.

The 3rd edition Chaos book was one of their better codices, ever. Not such a fan of the new one with the whole 'pirates and renegades' theme. I like the current Tyranids book.

This. The 3.5th ed Chaos book, IMO, was the best codex GW have ever made. I miss my 4th heavy support slot.
Anyway, at the moment, I'm loving the BA codex, just for the variety of lists available.

I actually really like the fluff in the necron codex. Its very lovecraftian & grandiose.
I think the fluff writing in the newer codices is pants. Especially those rubbish timelines which are 3 pages of a list of made up dates & made up battles where that codex's army kick ass. Waste of paper & ink if you ask me...

That's why the ork codex is awesome! The battles page is literally 1 page with a really cool header and half a dozen battles that all read something like "orks landed and kicked ass."

Deadly Dark Eldar Warrior

I voted Dark Eldar. I've read it more times than I care to tell, and not just for the army profiles. It's a very fun, if dark, army.
I also voted Chaos Daemons and Eldar, the former because I've also spent many a time reading it (Daemon fan) and the latter because I like all Eldar stuff. Those are more personal preferences though. I think Eldar have a great variety of units in their aspect warriors, which makes for an interesting, varied codex.

I think the entire first edition Rogue Trader book if that counts. The current books don't have much to them. The second edition Chaos book was awesome. It had 3 complete army lists in it for Chaos Marines, Chaos Cults, and Daemon World Armies. Probably the best book GW has ever produced IMO.
