Hi folks,

I just joined this forum, purely cos it's clearly the epicenter of awesome. As previously mentioned in the noob section, I'm a collector of Blood angels and Wood elves But specifically wanna focus on making my own chapter based on the Blood Angels morphology but Dark Angels heritage(ish).

I wanted to call them "Death Angels" but since typing it into google I came up with the following from Lexicanum,
"commonly known as Space Marines, and colloquially as Angels of Death" - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Space_Marines
Which I guess is the end of that... Any suggestions? Would like to keep the Angels part involved in the name...

As far as back story goes, I like the idea of a company of Blood Angels that have disgraced themselves by being tempted by Chaos but were never turned. As a result the Imperium accuses them of heresy although "Innocent until proven guilty", were never truly part of Chaos but are still exiled from being true Blood Angels and so started their own chapter to prove their worth. After all, who could follow in the foot steps of Sanguinius? The guy was a beast! He had broken legs and was fatigued but still managed to break a blood thirsters back over his knee!

Regarding colours, I am going to attempt a white colour scheme with coloured heads like BA's. Blue for devastators, Yellow for assault etc. Here's a link, sorry for the poor quality in advance. http://lightbox.com/YEyP5ht

For the troops I'm unsure as to what I can use. I don't have the space marines codex and not keen on buying it just to find out how to proceed on a custom chapter. I would like to keep the Death Company but not fussed about Sanguinary Guard (as they're clearly over-rated). Obviously keep the standard troops and I like the idea of using some Damned legionnaires as the equivalent of sternguard vets or just vets and they're iconography is the sort I am trying to go for (the skulls, not the flames).

I'm not sure what to do as chapter master but have already created a champion using a sanguinary guard with a spear converted from a 2 handed glaive encarmine axe. I Like the name "Pallistus the Sanguine", keep him BA colour's with a disgraced BA backstory yadda yadda yadda...
Captain Libertus with honour guard (probably convert from bits and pieces and a command squad), painted up gold and black.

I have found some beautifully crafted shoulderpads from Scibor miniatures;

BUT the shoulderpads are substantially larger than standard shoulder pads and not sure they look right. Here's some examples,

http://www.mywargame.com/2010/03/25/model-review-scibor-celtic-shoulder-pads/

Would like to hear opinions and suggestions on all of the above and anything else that springs to mind, especially regarding rules as I'm unclear on making dis/advantage traits for the troops.

Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards Giles.

P.S. the Navy blue commander on lightbox is a friend's custom chapter that I began to paint called "Emperor's Grace". Not keen on it, feel's a bit dark.

Hell's Angels?

Perhaps more seriously you could consider:

Angels Forsaken

or

Forsaken Seraphim

or

the Celestial Forsaken

First off, perhaps a Moderator could move this to background or general discussion? I think it's more apropos.

I'm with you on your train of thought. Here's what I've been working on:

I returned to 40k after about 19 years and have the mini's to field a full army of Space Marines(infantry only), but can't abide the thought of fighting other Imperium Forces.

I started in the Rogue Trader days, when marines weren't as fleshed out. They wrote things like "kil kil kil" and "Lust for blud" on their affects.

I started anew with orks because I'm trying to perfect my own chapter as well.

I've gone with a similar idea for Blood Angels, because I love the codex, but have slowly come to appreciate the vanilla Codex as very potent as well.

Subsequently, I want a Chapter that fights for the Imperium, but has the storyline background to excuse fighting Imperial forces, and allows me to use the Blood Angel or Vanilla Codex, so not a known chapter. My result is something similar to the Knights of Blood.....at least......a renegade chapter!

Even better, I've fleshed it out even more.

Enter: Ordo Liberatus. An Ordo of the Inquisition that focuses on the worlds still needing to be brought back within the folds of the Imperium. There are still thousands of them between the worlds recorded and participating. The Ordo faces all forms of heresy, from the domestic of heretics, corruption of chaos, the arrogant and obstinate, unsanctioned psykers and witches, to the supernatural of daemons, to the alien xenos. All these influences must be dealt with, and while the Ordo cannot claim any such level of supreme specialization as those of Hereticus, Malleus, or Xenos, deal with them it must, and thus needed its own military arm.

Enter: Angels Ascendant. Created in a later founding using the Gene-Seed of the Blood Angels and Dark Angels Primarchs, it was an attempt to temper the rage of the Blood Angels with the restraint and humility of the Dark Angels. It failed.

As a militant arm of the Ordo Liberatus, the Angels Ascendant is a crusade fleet. Currently, there is no home-world, as I see they have everything mobile, though they do keep some recruitment worlds. As necessary, the Codex is only loosely followed, and the chapter numbers well over 1000. There are several crusade fleets, some with dominant traits of Blood Angels or Dark Angels, with the most well balanced using the vanilla Codex.

In several occasions of liberating planets, the Ascendants have succumbed to the black rage and subsequently slaughtered massive amounts of the populace. Though much of this never reaches the Lords of Terra, on occasion a complaint does.

When asked to answer for this, it is met with haughtiness and contempt from both Chapter and Crusade masters, and Inquisitors of the Ordo, claiming that what must be done is done.

There is much controversy over the chapter back on Terra. They do not report directly to the lords, and the Ordo retains its own counsel. This is balanced by the fact that new worlds and tithes enrich the coffers of the Imperium.

At one point, the chapter is declared renegade, and refuses to return. Occasionally, a chapter is sent after them, or there are clashes with the IG or even SoB. Most lords look the other way because of the increase of land and income, but others still pursue the return and disbanding(eradication) of the chapter.

So here we have some history. I've been stuck on color scheme. I wanted to incorporate red, because in every successor chapter of the Blood Angels, minus Lamenters, it is dominant. I thought halved Black and Red, but the Angels Sanguine do that. Then I thought, red and green, but don't want them called "Christmas Marines". I'm thinking of halving them, lower black, and upper white, to incorporate the "ascending" part.....out of darkness. This was originally a color scheme for a gag chapter I was working on. The Chapter of Latter Day Primarchs......known for its heavy use of bikes. I didn't want to cross white and red(halved or quartered) because they'd all look like medics. So far, I'm almost 90% set on white over black. Thoought about going white with a silver left arm, opposite of Deathwatch.

Also considered it a chapter similar to deathwatch, with the Angels Ascendant universally joining to avoid persecution.

I REALLY wanted to make a Deathwatch army, but they'd almost exclusively fight xenos, to be proper.

Ah well, there's some brainstorming from someone else, hope it helps a bit

Brother Taurinus,

That sounds cool. I hadn't thought about half as much as you have but is certainly food for thought. I am still trying to finish my initial Blood Angels army but I am really looking forward to starting my own.

Regarding the paint, maybe you could try a quartered red/gold or maybe even red and a darker red? Maybe crossing blood and gore although i.m.o. I think gore is thinner and leaves a different texture too the other gw coloured paints which might also look cool!

Those are some ideas. I've got a couple models that I'm just slapping some paint on for texture and color. Had one coated in silver and outlined his armor with red(the edges of each section). Unfortunately, he kind of looks like he should be jousting in a tourney. I liked the idea of white with red borders, but it would have a similar effect, and also look like White Scars.

Yeah I had tried the same thing but again, White Scars came to mind. Do post a message if any of your idea's get posted? I'm finishing off my Blood Angels army first before I start my own chapter.

Immedately when i saw this thread I knew it was going to deal with angels. But Angels of Death they are but lets think of it this way. You don't need the word Angels in your name. Take a Puritain name.
Like....
Heavenly Host?
Host of (Homeplanet name here)

Angel names are too common in the 40k space marines.
Replace Angel with host.
Hell's Host
Use a mixture of dark angels and blood angels to make a perfect hybrid.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Rather than a company from the BA's who have been tempted by chaos and "exiled" to their own chapter, it might be better to have a newly forged chapter created from the BA gene seed have a close brush with Chaos (which would explain the smaller company sized chapter, and why they are a chapter in the first place - innocent until proven guilty doesn't exist in 40k - it is guilty until proven innocent (and often posthumously ).

The fledgling chapter could then be sent on a penitent crusade to atone for flirting with Chaos, which could explain the emo Dark Angels vibe.

Would also allow you some scope for conversions as they most probably would not have a great deal of equipment (being newly created and also not in the good books of the Inquisition) so they would most probably keep a lot of old equipment going, and may also embellish their own armour with signs of their loyalty to the Emp (such as the shoulder pads you were looking at).

And if you want to use all the BA units, you will need the BA codex, rather than just the standard SM codex.

Asherian Command, I see your point but many of the Angel's forces (that I am aware of) are within the successors of both Blood and Dark Angels aren't they? I would like to know if there are any others but I do like the word "Host" lol...

SilverMK2, I wanted to make a combination of the SM codex, DA codex and BA codex and wasn't particularly looking for BA rules. Out of all the units I would probably use the Death Company troops and use the variation of colours in the helmets for different squads. Mainly because like I previously mentioned, I already have a BA army currently being painted and fighting nids and chaos marines atm and kinda wanted something along similar lines WITHOUT the red thirst and black rage. Also not sure about the "emo" part of the DA but I will think about this in the meantime and appreciate all comments. After all, that's why I posted this!

This Chapter is getting scarily close to my Wanderers chapter XD.
Brush with chaos, come back as Warrior Angels recorganize chapter no company structure. Yeah.. This is getting interesting. As long as you don't name your Captains, Angel Princes, and your Chapter Council Arch Angels and the Chapter Master the Exalted One. Then your fine in my book.

HAHA Angel Princes!? That sounds pretty camp. I think I'm gonna leave my chapter master as "Pallistus the Sanguine" and have his armour as blood red. I was gonna use "Tyberios the Red Wake" off Forgeworld as I want to use a lot of skulls and he has no specific chapter markings but then I thought "That would probably piss a lot of people off when I could just build one myself..."

Sorry if it sounds similar to yours Asherian Command, but to be fair there must be hundreds of idea's for custom chapters on dakka alone which sound like other people's custom chapters?
